The engaging follow up to the urban fantasy series set in Charleston, South Carolina. An old enemy of Sorren’s is back in town. Sariel is a nephilmancer, a powerful sorcerer able to summon the nephilim, tainted eternal spirits that watch humanity and stand in judgment.

Sariel is looking for vengeance, because a century ago, during their last battle, Sorren killed Sariel’s son and helped the Alliance send Sariel into harsh exile. Because of Sorren’s long affiliation with Charleston, Sariel has decided that the city must be destroyed, and in retaliation for his own loss, Sariel vows to destroy the mortal helpers Sorren protects.

To do this, Sariel must bring five of the Watchers through a portal from another realm. When all five are present, judgment will fall, and the nephilim will reap and feed on the souls of the dead.

Vendetta is the second installment in Gail Z. Martin's Deadly Curiosities series. Set in Charleston, South Carolina, the Deadly Curiosities series follows the adventures of 20-something Cassidy Kincaide. Cassidy owns Trifles & Folly, an antique/curio store and high-end pawn shop in Charleston, South Carolina. Kincaide continues the family tradition that began in 1670, in acquiring and neutralizing dangerous supernatural items. It’s the perfect job for Cassidy, whose psychometry gift lets her touch any object and know its history.

Cassidy works together with her business partner Sorren, a 600-year-old vampire, and Teag Logan, her assistant, best friend, and sometimes bodyguard. Cassidy and crew works with a group called the Alliance to keep the "Spookies" off the street, and out of the bad guys hands. In this installment, Sorren's past comes to light of day in a major way. We could call this installment the supernatural apocalypse version since so much disturbing evil finds it's way into every nook and cranny in Charleston and everyone will need to chip in to stop it from happening.

Hundreds of years ago, Sorren and his allies faced off against a Nephilmancer named Sariel. Sariel, who was thought to have been killed, has became a bit too powerful, and is now able to summon Nephilim, Watchers, and Reapers to do his bidding. If he unleashes FIVE Watchers on Charleston, there will be a Reckoning will result in the loss of hundreds of thousands of lives. Anyone connected to Sorren finds themselves targeted, and the result is non-stop action, suspense, blood-shed, violence, and a coming together of all sorts of people to help Cassidy, Sorren, and Teag save Charleston from being destroyed.

I really like Cassidy. She's upped her game since the first installment. She's become confident in using certain objects to fight the Nephilim who just refuse to die. She has a ghost dog name Bo who stands by her side, and another named Baxter who warns her when bad things are close by. Even though Sorren has been around a whole lot longer, Cassidy has more than made up for being human in a world that continues to test her every movement.

I adore Teag as well. Teag is a bad-ass who knows a thing or two about using a magic called Weaving. He's also a world class hacker and researchers which comes in handy when Cassidy and Sorren are looking for information that only he can access. I dare say that Teag has the only romantic interest in this book. I don't really mind that at all. I am not overly sentimental about the lack of romance for Cassidy. I was, however, pleasantly surprised that Sorren had one of his own who we meet in this story.

In the end, Vendetta is such amazing story with plenty action, and fight scenes, and characters, and the villains are just plain devious and evil. I love the camaraderie between Cassidy and Sorren and Teag. I love the secondary characters like Lucinda, Father Anne, Hunter, and Chuck just to name a few. Mind blown at how much Martin puts these characters through and how many different Voodoo Loa's that Martin uses in the story. In my mind, Cassidy will never be a Mary Sue character since she can honestly kick ass using any object that has emotions attached to them. Really, really hoping for a third installment!
