Some secrets are best kept hidden…
Anastasia Phoenix has always been the odd girl out, whether moving from city to international city with her scientist parents or being the black belt who speaks four languages.
And most definitely as the orphan whose sister is missing, presumed dead.
She’s the only one who believes Keira is still alive, and when new evidence surfaces, Anastasia sets out to follow the trail—and lands in the middle of a massive conspiracy. Now she isn’t sure who she can trust. At her side is Marcus, the bad boy with a sexy accent who’s as secretive as she is. He may have followed her to Rome to help, but something about him seems too good to be true.
Nothing is as it appears, and when everything she’s ever known is revealed to be a lie, Anastasia has to believe in one impossibility. She will find her sister.

"How far would you go to save the only person you have left?"

Proof of Lies is the first installment in author Diana Rodriguez Wallach's Anastasia Phoenix series. 17-year old Anastasia Phoenix lost her parents to an apparent car crash 3 years ago. At the time, they both worked for the Dresden Chemical Corporation and were preparing for yet another move; a move that caused some major animosity and hurt words by Anastasia. The reason for the animosity lies in the fact that her family has been to 9 different cities, 5 different countries, and 4 different continents.

The only plus side is that she can speak 4 different languages. After losing their parents, Keira gave up her own future as a Doctor in order to protect and take care of her sister. You could say that there was a bit of resentment on Keira's part for having to give up her life & to take care of her younger sister, and on Anastasia's part after Keira threw herself into reckless parties, and meaningless sex. Then, yet another tragedy strikes the Phoenix household which now includes their friend and roommate Charlotte.

After Anastasia returns from the store to find that her sister is missing, all signs indicate that she may have met with a bad ending. Anastasia loses herself to major depression, and heart break, until she learns of a video showing Keira and a beau has been discovered. A beau who she last seen the night Keira went missing. A video that may prove that Keira is still alive. Anastasia receives yet another shock when family friend Randolph Urban, CEO of Dresden, makes a claim that her parents were under investigation by the FBI, and they may not be who she thought they were.

With financial support from Urban, and new friend Marcus Rey, another Dresden kid, alongside, Anastasia travels to Italy in hopes of learning more about what really happened to Keira, and why she was really taken. What she discovers there, will have major repercussions for the rest of the series.
One of my favorite characters in this story besides Anastasia, is Charlotte. Her support, her computer prowess, her unwillingness to let Anastasia run into trouble alone, and her courage to stand by Anastasia when she checked out for several months, made her someone to love and keep an eye out throughout this series.

From beginning to end, Anastasia goes through some major growing. She has to in order to discover things about her sister, her parents, and even herself that would have remained secret otherwise. Oh sure, she may have had Marcus alongside for the ride, and oh sure, Marcus own issues may be just important as hers, but Anastasia is someone who can take care of herself. She's got a black belt for a reason folks, and yes, she knows how to use it in order to get what she wants from those who hold deep, dark, dangerous secrets. There are a whole lot of twists in this book. Twists that left me wondering what will happened next.
