Review - I'd Tell You I Love You, But Then I'd Have to Kill You (Gallagher Girls #1) by Ally Carter

I'm one of those spur of the moment kind of readers that picks up a book just to see what all the commotion and fuss is about. So, when I saw that my local library branch had a copy of I'd Tell You I Love You, But Then I'd Have to Kill You, I decided to throw caution to the wind and give it a try. I mean, what's another book to read on top of the mountain of books I already have, Am I right?

Book # 1 follows the exploits of 15 year old Cameron "Cammie" Morgan who is a Gallagher Academy for Exceptional Young Women legacy sophomore. Her own mother Rachel is headmistress at the school as well as a retired CIA operative and we're told that her father was also some sort of operative who went on a mission but never returned. I will say that I found Cammie's voice to be a lot of fun as well as unique. She's pretty serious about her studies and has a genius IQ, but, when it comes to maters of the heart, she is as innocent and clueless as they come which makes for a very interesting storyline when you throw in her genius friends trying to give her dating advice.

I should mention that Cammie's friends are as important to the overall telling of this story as Cammie herself is. There's Rebecca "Bex" Baxter, Elizabeth "Liz" Sutton and Macey McHenry who goes from being a very annoying character when first introduced, to part of Cammie's besties and confidantes. I would also be remiss in saying that I'm very pleased that Rachel Morgan, Cammie's mom, actually is there for her, and not one of those MIA parents that are profoundly apparent in YA Novels today.

Let's not leave out the gents shall we? The two that stand out immediately are Josh and Joe Solomon. Josh becomes someone Cammie tries hard to like while keeping her spy school undercover while also trying to pass her Cover Ops class final. Solomon is an interesting character as well since has an extensive background in Covert Ops and I'm wondering just how far Carter is willing to push him and Cammie's mother into a relationship. Guess we shall see since the series is six books long.

There are times that you need a book that is silly, idiotic, fun, a bit serious at times, and one that you don't find yourself dwelling over situations, characters, or love triangles. This is that book for me. Cross My Heart and Hope to Spy is the next book in this series, and one that I have already requested from my library and hope to pick up soon. You may even find it on this weeks STS feature!

Waiting on Wednesday 07/31/2013

"Waiting On Wednesday” is a weekly event, hosted by Jill at “Breaking the Spine”, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

This weeks choice is-----Corroded (The St. Croix Chronicles # 3)
By Karina Cooper

Why am I'm waiting on this book besides the fact that Gilded tore my heart to pieces and I really, really want to know how Cherry is going to survive and what she's going to do next?

Micajah Hawke. Haven't heard about him? Well then, might I suggest that you picked up Tarnished or even The Mysterious Case of Mr. Strangeway and get yourselves introduced to the mysterious man candy that rules the Midnight Menagerie a London pleasure garden and the person who has had a special part in Cherry's life ever since she became London's only female collector at 15 years of age.

The St. Croix Chronicles is a cross steampunk, romance, and alternative historical series that I highly recommend.

Hungry for vengeance, Cherry St. Croix is forced to the fog-ridden streets of Victorian London.

My rival, a collector of bounties like myself, has murdered one of my own. In consequence, I have been removed from my house, my staff, and all who would support me. I have nowhere else to turn, so I beg asylum within the Midnight Menagerie, London’s decadent pleasure garden.

Micajah Hawke’s dominance there will not tolerate my presence for long. I am fixated on revenge, but I walk a razor’s edge under his scrutiny His wicked power is not easily ignored, and I must not allow myself to submit—no matter how sweet the sacrifice.

Challenging my rival to a race is the only way to end this, no small task when the quarry is the murderous Jack the Ripper. As my enemies close in, I fear the consequences of this hunt. I am trapped between two killers, and what doesn’t kill me may leave its scars forever.

Release Day Review - Magic Rises (Kate Daniels #6) by Ilona Andrews

Magic Rises finally hits the bookshelves after a rather long delay in which the authors finished the Edge series and released Andrea's novel Gunmental Magic. I have to say that this book is a doozy and readers of the series should be prepared for anything to happen at any time including a very emotional ending to the story.

Kate and her mate Curran the beast master are put into a tight spot when a group of younger shape shifters turn Loup and the pack runs out of the precious medicine called panacea that can prevent a shapeshifter from going Loup completely. Given the circumstances, Curran decides to accept the European Packs request that he and representatives of the Pack travel to Europe to protect a pregnant female named Desandra from harm until the baby is born.

Traveling to Europe alongside Kate and Curran, are Barabas, Georgetta, Mahon, Keira (Jim's sister), Andrea, Raphael, Aunt B, Eduardo, Derek, and Doolittle. Saiman also joins the trip because of certain events that take place prior to this story which you can read at the back of the book. You probably SHOULD read the story first before diving into Magic Rises as the authors encourage.

While in Europe, Kate and Curran are both severely tested, especially Kate when she meets the only person other than her dreaded father that could match her in intensity and fighting abilities; Hugh d’Ambray. Kate and Curran's relationship is also severely tested to the point where I found myself reaching for a golf club to smash it over Curran's head for absolutely being a total dick-wad towards Kate. I absolutely hate miscommunication and characters who presume that the other knows exactly what they are feeling at the time of an argument.

But, let’s not get distracted. As I said, Magic Rises is intense. The European packs are severely distrustful and hateful towards Curran and they really hate Kate because she is the only human around. Kate’s being part of the pack is put to the test as well and I really didn't much care for the fact that certain friends and acquaintances didn't stand up for Kate especially Curran. You can absolutely feel the isolation that Kate goes through even though supposedly the pack has accepted her as one of their own throughout dozens of challenges to the death. But, when you are NOT a shapeshifter, it is a difficult situation to be put into when everyone wants to challenge your legitimacy as being the Consort to the Beast Master.

Then there are the machinations of Hugh himself. Now that he is truly aware of who Kate is after doing is own search and he knows that she’s Roland’s long lost daughter, I will be hard pressed not to want to see them fight to the final death. That being said, I was impressed with the interaction between Hugh and Kate even though you knew that he was most likely moving her around like a chess piece putting her into different situations to test her and see what she's really made of. I absolutely loved the fight scene between them and was griping like crazy when it came to an abrupt end.

Unfortunately, Magic Rises doesn’t exactly end with everyone walking away unscathed. I was shocked to learn that a major character falls and I am unwilling to spoil this review in order to say whom. I’m wondering how the pack will take this news and who will step up to take this characters place.

I actually found the idea of moving the setting from Atlanta to the European continent appealing. It’s nice to switch things up and add a little spice to the story now and again. I am hoping that Magic Breaks (Book # 7) doesn't take a full year before it is released. We need a resolution between Hugh and Kate as well as between Roland and Kate sometime before I fall off my chair and die.

Review - Midnight Frost (Mythos Academy #5) by Jennifer Estep

As the Mythos Academy series steam rolls along, we've learned that Gypsy girl and Nike's Champion Gwen Frost has a lot of responsibilities that's she required to fulfill as well as attending the prestigious Mythos Academy which just so happens to be the same place her own mother, and grandmother attended.

Gwen, while searching for antiquities that can defeat Loki, is also a high value target for the Reapers of Chaos led by Agrona Quinn and Vivian Holler who continue to try to kill off Gwen while bringing about another war between the Reapers and the Protectorate.

I must say they need to meet their own end soon but I absolutely trust Jennifer to wrap up this series in such a way that it will leave us all breathless and satisfied. I don’t like villains who just won’t freaking die but stay around causing more havoc and trouble for my girl Gwen and her friends.

Luckily for Gwen, she's come a long way in making her own way and proving herself in a world filled with Valkyries, Ninjas, Spartans, and Vikings. She has her trusty & awesome sword named Vic, her psychometry skills & abilities that have saved her life on more than a few occasions, and friends like Daphne Cruz, Carson Callahan, Oliver Hector, Kenzie, Aiko, Alexi, Coach Ajax, Aurora Metis, and Nickamedes who have not only helped protect her, but are also her closest friends and allies.

**Food break! Gwen is now enjoying a jumbo sized pretzel with nacho cheese sauce and a dark chocolate brownie, which also happens to be Gin Blanco’s hair color. Hmmmm back to the review!

In case you believe I've left someone off Gwen’s list of friends and supporters, I'm getting to him slowly but surely. If you have read Crimson Frost (which I hope you do before jumping into Midnight Frost), you know that both Gwen and Logan Freaking Quinn had something major happen to them in that book. You therefore will not be surprised that both Gwen & Logan have had to deal with the aftermath and the affects, which includes Gwen’s nightmares, and Logan’s own withdrawal from Mythos Academy (See Spartan Frost for more details.)

Midnight Frost is once again filled with attempts by the reapers to kill Gwen off. Gwen and friends own determination and drive to find a cure for a fallen comrade in arms before its too late. This includes a trip across country to Denver’s Mythos Academy where Gwen encounters not only awesome Gryphons, but a startling truth and revelation behind her own families heritage. There is also Gwen's meeting with Rory Forseti who just so happens to be Gwen’s Spartan cousin. Yes, she’s a total badass and I hope that this is NOT the last time we get to see her in this series.

Can I just say that I want a freaking Gryphon? I absolutely found them adorable and their bond to Gwen was fantastic! I thought that Gwen’s meeting with them was maybe the best part of the entire story if you forgive my giddiness. Not that a certain Spartan’s return wasn’t interesting. But, it was, I think, definitely inevitable and expected by readers knowing that he couldn’t stay away from Gwen forever.

*Food break! Gwen is now enjoying a Bison Cheese Burger with bacon and cheese fries, along with ranch dipping sauce and dark chocolate fudge. There she goes with the dark chocolate again! Sorry, back to the review!

Midnight Frost finds a different Gwen Frost. She’s more of a legend now than a simple gypsy girl who used her psychometry abilities to find missing and lost objects for her fellow students. She’s no longer accused of being a Reaper spy, but now the students understand that Gwen is an extremely important cog in the wheel that will be used to defeat and send Loki packing. If she could just figure out how before it is too late and maybe get a little help from Nike and other gods and goddess who are supposed to be on her side.

Mythos Academy definitely has similarities to Estep's Elemental Assassin series which I absolutely love. The main characters are badass, they have unique abilities, they absolutely without a doubt love food, they have a determined nemesis (Vivian/Loki vs Mab Monroe) that they know they must defeat in order to find peace and happiness. It also seems that they both have boyfriend issues which I HOPE & PRAY end up resolved asap!

It's a fairly short wait until Killer Frost is released on February 25, 2014 by K-Teen. Luckily, we have 2 Elemental Assassin novels coming out in the meantime, along with Owen's novella! YAY!

Review - Nomad by J.L. Bryan

I won Nomad by J.L. Bryan from Jenni @ Alluring Reads in one of her flash giveaways! Thank you Jenni!

I've had Nomad on my "looks interesting list" since I was part of the cover reveal for the book a few weeks ago. It should also be notated that this is the first book that I've ever read by J.L. Bryan, and it won't be my last.

Nomad's lead protagonist is 19 year old Raven a revolutionary who lives in the year 2064 where life isn't exactly a Utopian society. Raven has been fighting a guerrilla warfare against the tyrannic regime of Supreme Executive Logan Carraway for 10 years and in the process, she has lost nearly everyone she's ever loved.

When a chance comes along to change the course of history and stop Logan, Raven ends up being transported back in time to the year 2013 where she arrives with no recollection or memories of where she came from, or why she's in the middle of a highway with a backpack filled with items that obviously aren't hers.

Thankfully, she has a few trusty gadgets on hand that slowly brings her memories back to the reason why she is in 2013 in the first place, and what she has to do. She also realizes that whatever mission she's on, it won't be easy with Logan's Providence Security team hot on her tail trying to stop her in her tracks.

As for Logan, I would say that he's a stereotypical male character in a new adult setting. He's a charmer, he parties like it's 1999, he does things like rock climbing just for the thrill of it and probably to aggravate his family. He takes classes just to impress certain female acquaintances and he doesn't understand that his family is the cause of all future problems for the country until Raven comes along and enlightens him to that fact.

Time travel has been a fascination of mine since I was knee high to a grasshopper. What can I say, I'm a science fiction geek! I've often wondered what it would have been like to go back in time and kill dictators like Adolf Hitler (Germany), Joseph Stalin (Russia), Mao Zedong (China), and others, and then return to my own time. Would it actually matter if the dictators were killed before they could commit heinous atrocities on their OWN people? Or, would someone else step up in their place and continue their evil machinations and therefore making the trip back in time seem useless? This is also Raven's dilemma she has to contend with. I love the idea of Paradox in that one mistake could have a devastating affects on the time line and even on your own life.

There is a bit of everything thrown in to Nomad. You have a kickass heroine in Raven who is also very intelligent and makes some very interesting choices. There is also the obvious romance angle that New Adult is known for. There is the surprising appearance of a character named Eliad who shows up and apparently knows Raven and makes her think about the consequences of killing Logan. But, the bottom line is that nobody can help Raven. Not her best friend Kari, not her new roommate Audra, and not anyone from her own time period.

Nomad is an extremely fast paced novel that I read in less than 5 hours. I loved Raven. I enjoyed reading about her thinking through problems as they come along, and she ends up making the best of a difficult situation. I will say that I am one of those readers that would NOT mind seeing Raven again very soon. I am especially interested in her relationship with the mysterious Eliad and what they do as nomadic time travelers.

From award-winning author Stephanie Hemphill comes the fascinating story of Mary Shelley, a brilliant teenager who wrote one of the greatest literary masterpieces of all time: Frankenstein.

An all-consuming love affair.

A family torn apart by scandal.

A young author on the brink of greatness.

Hideous Love is the fascinating story of Gothic novelist Mary Shelley, who as a teen girl fled her restrictive home only to find herself in the shadow of a brilliant but moody boyfriend, famed poet Percy Shelley. It is the story of the mastermind behind one of the most iconic figures in all of literature: a monster constructed out of dead bodies and brought to life by the tragic Dr. Frankenstein.

Mary wrote Frankenstein at the age of nineteen, but inspiration for the monster came from her life-the atmospheric European settings she visited, the dramas swirling around her, and the stimulating philosophical discussions with the greatest minds of the period, like her close friend, Lord Byron.

This luminous verse novel from award-winning author Stephanie Hemphill reveals how Mary Shelley became one of the most celebrated authors in history.

Review - Northern Bites (Aurora Sky: Vampire Hunter #2) by Nikki Jefford

*Thoughts*

Northern Bites has been on my most anticipated sequels list since finishing Transfusion last December. I am thankful to Nikki Jefford for offering me a copy of this book and hope I will see book number 3 soon!

I should probably start this review by saying that I would advise you to stop here, and not read any further if you haven't yet had the opportunity to read Transfusion. If you have read Transfusion, carry on my wayward followers! If not, go away until you have.

18 year old Aurora Sky is the series heroine. Since the release of Transfusion, she's had her life completely turned around just by having AB negative blood and dying at the hands of an unknown driver. Later, she's told by a secret government agency that she has no choice but to become a vampire hunter, losing any and all hope of ever attending the college of her dreams outside of Alaska, or face permanent death. Some choice. She's also being forced into taking a so called antidote each month or face the possibility of becoming the very thing that she hunts; a vampire.

Northern Bites picks up two weeks after the conclusion of Transfusion. Aurora is forced into a partnership with her main rival and nemesis Valerie Ward who is a vampire junkie and obsessed with hurting others like Aurora. I haven't always cared for or liked Valerie the boyfriend stealing minx. I thought she was absolutely conceited and a miserable person for her actions towards Aurora.

Aurora eventually learns the truth about what really happened to her on the night she died and lost her free will. She faces a hard choice when she is sent on yet another mission with Valerie and a government recruiter named Jared that doesn't exactly go as planned. In the end, Val's own personal choice was surprising and definitely brave. I actually came to understand her more than I did Aurora's own supposed friend Noel Harper who really got my blood boiling with her own actions.

Although Aurora isn't a coward, by any means, she still has some issues on the boyfriend front, as well as the fact that she can't really trust anyone except for maybe her mother who has her own problems to deal with. I really didn't care for Jared from the introduction and hope he gets what's coming to him soon. I won't spoil anything for you except to say that after you read Northern Bites, you too will come to hopefully, the same conclusion. I also believe that there are others, like Agent Melcher, who are trying to guide Aurora into making some really bad decisions and I hope I am wrong.

Aurora's interaction with Dante needs to continue, and let's put Fane away in a box for good. I'm not sure how anyone can trust him. I found the fantasy sex scene between Aurora and certain other characters in the book to be seriously hot. I'm hoping that Aurora will get a real booty call soon. The girl desperately needs a break from school, being a vampire hunter, and especially those that surround & control her.

I am on the bandwagon by saying that Northern Bites definitely exceeded my expectations in every way. The story is much more intense, choices are not that simple, or obvious, and Nikki learns more about what happened to her and others that have AB negative blood. She still faces serious tests and challenges, and I hope she eventually learns how to trust others, and finds a way out of her situation that seems bleak at the moment.
