About Melanie:

Melanie has always been drawn to story telling. In fact, she can’t remember a time when she wasn’t telling a story in her head or on paper. In grade school, they had journal writing time which she turned into story telling time, weaving tales of magic and adventure that mimicked the fairy tales and myths that she loved to read. It was there, with the help of two very special teachers, that she nurtured this love and started her journey as a writer.

She writes fantasy, paranormal romance, and everything in between, seasoned with a good dash of adventure and mystery. Join her on my tales of magic, adventure, and romance.

Waiting on Wednesday 07/03/2013

"Waiting On Wednesday” is a weekly event, hosted by Jill at “Breaking the Spine”, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

This weeks choice is-----

Bitter Spirts by Jenn Bennett!

Why, you ask, am I waiting on this awesome new release from one of my favorite writers of all-times? Let me count the reasons.

1. The Roaring Twenties set in San Francisco? I'm in!
2. It's a new paranormal series by the same writer who gives us the Arcadia Bell series which I will do absolutely anything to get my hands on!
3. Did I mention it's Jenn Bennett one of my favorite authors? Nuff' said!

First in a new romance series: It’s the roaring twenties, and San Francisco is a hotbed of illegal boozing, raw lust, and black magic. The fog-covered Bay Area can be an intoxicating scene, particularly when you specialize in spirits…

Aida Palmer performs a spirit medium show onstage at Chinatown’s illustrious Gris-Gris speakeasy. However, her ability to summon (and expel) the dead is more than just an act.

Winter Magnusson is a notorious bootlegger who’s more comfortable with guns than ghosts—unfortunately for him, he’s the recent target of a malevolent hex that renders him a magnet for hauntings. After Aida’s supernatural assistance is enlisted to banish the ghosts, her spirit-chilled aura heats up as the charming bootlegger casts a different sort of spell on her...

On the hunt for the curseworker responsible for the hex, Aida and Winter become drunk on passion. And the closer they become, the more they realize they have ghosts of their own to exorcise.

Pre-Release Review: Some Quiet Place by Kelsey Sutton

Some Quiet Place is Kelsey Sutton's first YA novel. It tells the story of Elizabeth Caldwell, a 17 year old living in Wisconsin who apparently survived being struck by a truck when she was 4 years old. Since then, she's apparently the only human being alive who can't feel any emotions. She's also different in that she can actually see and talk to the various Elements and Emotions like Fear, Courage, and Denial that surround her fellow classmates and family on a daily basis.

Liz is pretty much alone in the world because her parents treat her like she's a POD person, her brother really isn't around all that much, her best friend Maggie Stone is dealing with cancer, and her ex best friend Sophia Richardson has all but turned into a mean girl who directs all her frustration and anger towards Elizabeth who takes it with a grain of salt.

In many ways, Some Quiet Place is a difficult story to review without spoiling the story for others who may want to read it in the future. There is the obvious point that Elizabeth  and yet another secret that slowly unveils itself over the course of the story.

SQP has some extremely brutal moments which may turn people off who don't like that sort of thing. The brutality doesn't just come from one single source either. It's various sources who have their own agendas. It's also an emotional story when reading about someone who is suffering from the cause and effects of cancer and a character like Elizabeth who can't show or feel any emotional connection to the person dealing with it.

There is definitely a bit of romance involved in Some Quiet Place as well. I'm sure there are those who have read that there is a 3 way love triangle between Elizabeth, Fear, and Joshua Hayes. I'm sure there will be those who will take sides on which characters should end up with Elizabeth. But, let me say this, Fear is a character who goes above and beyond the call of duty looking for the girl he fell he love with and then she disappeared without a trace.

He searched high and low for 13 years looking for her truly believing that her enemies have caught up with her and done her harm. So, yes, he harasses, bothers, and tries to test Elizabeth's emotional fortitude at each and every corner because Fear believes she is the answer to all his questions. He also finds himself protecting her from harm at the cost of his own life. Joshua is a decent character as well but I found him more of a best friend influence, rather than a love interest. In the end, it will be up to the reader to decide whether or not I'm wrong or right.

The title of the book is appropriate in that every now and again, people need some quiet place to get away from the obnoxiousness of life and to find some place to unwind and just be yourself or someone else for a moment or two.

Apparently, Some Quiet Place is a standalone that I don't see any sequels appearing any time soon. Yet, there is a question I have to Kelsey Sutton: What happened to "Elizabeth's" real mother? Was she really taken into safety by her father? Inquiring minds would love to know!

Calder and Lily never imagined falling in love would mean breaking apart. But ever since Lily started wearing a glass pendant that once belonged to Nadia, Calder's adoptive mother, she's been having vivid dreams of what life was like for the mermaid matriarch. In fact, she's been dreaming as if she were Nadia!

And Nadia, it seems, made a promise before her death. A promise to reunite Calder's biological mother with her son. Lily knows merfolk are bound to keep their promises. Calder's not buying into it, though. He chalks up the dreams to stress. He wants Lily to focus on the future—their future, not the past. Which forces Lily to send Calder away. Calder goes, feeling rejected and more than a little tempted to revert to his hunting ways.

What both of them overlook is the present: Calder's sisters, Maris and Pavati, are fighting for control of the mermaid clan, and now that Lily and her dad have transformed into mer-creatures, both mermaids vie for daughter and father as allies. Which of the two mermaids can be trusted? Will Lily make costly mistakes, forcing her to descend to the depths of Lake Superior? And if Calder returns, will he be the same merman Lily grew to love? The stakes are high, with many lives at risk, but Calder and Lily must confront the past as well as their darkest impulses if they want a chance at being together.
