Cover Reveal - Conjure by Lea Nolan w/Giveaway

Description
Be careful what you search for... Sixteen-year-old twins Emma and Jack Guthrie hope for a little summer adventure when they find an eighteenth-century message in a bottle revealing a hidden pirate treasure. With their best friend—and Emma's secret crush—Cooper Beaumont, they discover the treasure, and accidentally unleash an ancient Gullah Hoodoo curse that attacks Jack with the wicked flesh-eating Creep and promises to steal Cooper’s soul on his approaching eighteenth birthday. Determined to save the two people she loves the most, Emma apprentices herself to an elderly sea island hoodoo root doctor who agrees to teach her the magic to undo the hex while she works to unravel the riddle of the pirate’s message. With the clock ticking down to Cooper’s birthday and Jack turning into a walking skeleton, Emma must hone her new skills to conjure visions of the past to discover the curse’s origins, steal an antique ruby, battle a horde of terrifying demon dogs, and summon ancient spirits who can help set things right before it’s too late.

Early Review - Burn for Burn by Jenny Hahn/Siobhan Vivian

Burn for Burn follows the exploits of Mary Zane, Lillia Cho, and Kat DeBrassio.

Mary and her family left Jar Island 4 years ago after she was the subject of continued bullying and name calling by her school mates. Called the Big Easy because of the fact that she was overweight, even by the boy she supposedly liked, she continues to feel angst and anger towards the boy. Mary returns to Jar Island without all the weight and with one thing on her mind; Payback.

Lillia is the rich girl of the bunch. She pretty much gets whatever she wants and is second in popularity to her friend Rennie Holtz. She hangs around with the same group of people, and basically bends over backwards to ensure that she doesn't lose any of her faux friends. When a misunderstanding concerning her sister and a boy she likes happens, Lillia is driven towards Payback on the boy.

Kat DeBrassio is the poor girl of the bunch. Once friends with Lillia, and Rennie, the threesome ended up going their separate ways and Kat soon became the subject of false rumors and innuendos that drove her into being by herself. Yet, once Kat understands why Mary is intent on her payback, it doesn't take long for Kat to realize that she has the prime opportunity to exact some revenge on the person most responsible for spreading lies against her; Rennie.

My first thoughts were WTH was that ending? Are you serious about leaving this story in that manner? Do you intend on having a sequel to this story sometime in the near future so we know what happens to Mary, Lillia, and Kat? I especially want to know what the deal with Mary is. Does she have some sort of supernatural abilities that weren't explained, or what? If this was supposed to be a revenge book on the mean girls, well, clearly there are some major questions that need answering.

*Upon further research, it appears this is the first book in a 3-part trilogy. The next book is called Fire with Fire and releases in 2013, while Ashes to Ashes releases in 2014.*

Right off the bat, my one complaint was the alternating POV's between the three girls. There were times when it would have been better to just allow one person to continue to tell the story, and then revert or move onto someone else.

I get the overall premise of this book as being anti-bullying and paying people back for treating you like pond scum. I'm totally down with that since I was the subject to bullying during Middle School until I totally fought back and got my ass handed to me by my parents. While I abhor violence, I don't have anything against standing up for yourself and protecting your right to be where you want to be and do what you intend to do.

In the end, Mary's desire for payback was more interesting than both Kat and Lillia's combined. There is an old Confucius saying about digging two graves when searching for revenge. You never know what is going to happen once you travel down the road of revenge. Things have a tendency of biting you in the ass, and there's not a lot you can do about once the horses have left the barn.

Early Review - Chosen by Sable Grace (Dark Breeds # 3)

CHOSEN picks up six weeks after the conclusion of BEDEVILED. Kyana Aslan is now the Chosen Goddess of the Hunt even though she hasn't undergone her full regiment of training. Thanks to the caring and understanding of Artemis the former Goddess, Kyana learns more about her abilities and herself than ever before.

Kyana’s relationship with Ryker (the Chosen God of Gods Zeus) has grown exponentially now that they are together on Olympus and spending time together. Ryker obviously loves Kyana who is stubborn as they come when it comes to saying I LOVE YOU in return. PNR lovers will be happy to know that there is quite A LOT of sexual hotness between the two characters in Chosen. It also doesn’t detract from the storyline which is a positive in my opinion.

Kyana still believes that she is one of the best Trackers that the Order has to offer even though she is no longer a dark breed (half Lychen and half Vampire). While Cronus is making his move against his sons, Kyana ends up cooped up on Olympus where she is being trained and protected and treated like an invalid by Ryker and others. Kyana refuses to allow anyone to tell her what to do when it comes to hunting down and stopping Cronus. This, of course, causes more sparks and arguments.

Kyana still has her ups and downs as a character. Chosen really brings those to the forefront. While she makes some harebrained decisions, she also makes some timely and ultimately right choices in regards to stopping Cronus and trusting Haven to be on her side. She continues to be pulled in several directions thanks largely to Ryker and Haven. While she is brave and seems to understand what she is doing, she still makes silly mistakes and it costs her in devastating ways.

Somehow, which isn't really explained all that well, Cronus has escaped from his island prison and is gathering a dark army which includes some from Kyana's human past. Those from Kyana's past are not nice and yet there is one in particular who once again comes to her aid in her time of need.

If you haven’t read ASCENSION, I would highly recommend that you do. I say that because in order to understand what has happened to this point, you need to read the two previous books in the series. It will give you an idea of where we are in the story, and why the world has gone to hell in a hand basket. It will also allow you to understand the world in which this is written; a world that actually is separated into 3 separate realms of existence which includes humans, and the Gods of Olympus.

Chosen appears to be the last book in the Dark Breed trilogy and it seems as though most if not all of the loose ends have been tied up. There was even a poignant moment between Ares and Ryker that only took 410 years to resolve.

Once again, Chosen is set in St. Augustine, Florida and parts of Jacksonville, FL. I really appreciate when local authors set their stories where I live, or have visited over the past 12 years and can actually understand the setting they are writing about. I know Sable Grace is the writing duo of Heather Waters and Laura Barone and therefore will look forward to what they come up with next either together or solo.

This weeks WOW is.....

Rogue Descendant is the third book in the Nikki Glass series. It is
scheduled to be released April 30, 2013. I absolutely love this series.
I love this cover probably better than the second book in the series.

Help Wanted! Associate Blogger and Reviewer Needed Asap!

Hello everyone!
I hope this post finds everyone doing great.
I am posting a help wanted ad which sounds a little tacky
considering this is all about books and reviewing books.
However, as of this Thursday, I am returning to medical
school part time for the next 8 months. I really need a paying
job since reviews don't put food on the table. I've also been
out of work for so long that I'm starting to go stir crazy.

In light of that fact, I am looking for some help. I am looking
for someone who can step in when I am unable due to studying
for tests or what have you. I am looking for an associate
reviewer, and possibly a co-blogger who can write reviews (1-2)
a week. Easy peasy.

If you are interested, please send me an email @
shelly.romano@comcast.net with your pertinent information
such as if you have a current blog, and your most recent review.

If you are a follower of this blog, then you know that I love
to read. My tastes are eclectic in that I love YA paranormal,
Dystopian, and steampunk. I LOVE Urban Fantasy with my
PNR being my second favorite. I also like mysteries, and
suspense. If you decide to take me up on my offer, I am open
to having you review ANYTHING you so choose. I am that
serious about asking for help.

Thank you for allowing me this brief interruption.
Have a great week!
