*Early Review* Cursed By Destiny (Weird Girls, #3) by Cecy Robson

*CURSED BY DESTINTY Blurb*

Celia Wird and her three sisters are just like other 20-something girls—with one tiny exception: they're products of a backfired curse that has given each of them unique powers that make them, well, weird…

Celia’s a girl in trouble. Her heart is bound to Aric, but he is a pureblood were who must deny her or risk condemning his species to extinction. And that’s just her love life. She’s also been called to take down a group of demon terrorists looking to overthrow the paranormal world. (No pressure.)

In order to bring them down, Celia must ally herself to Misha, the master vampire who has made no secret of his desire for her.

And if that weren’t enough misfortune for one girl, a clairvoyant’s prediction could destroy Celia and Aric’s love for good. The only way to protect the world from unbridled supernatural terrorism is for Celia to bind herself to her destined mate. And that doesn’t appear to be Aric…

*My Thoughts*

I should totally warn readers that before you read through this full review, you must know that I am absolutely a mess after reading Cursed by Destiny. So much so, that this is actually the third draft of my original review! I hesitated making outrageous commentary while huffing and puffing and tossing this book across the room more times than I cared to count.

As of this writing, I am glad that the po-po didn't come knocking on my door with all my utterly nonsensical screaming and bitching at certain characters, events, and especially the heart stopping ending which isn't all that surprising if you paid CLOSE attention to the events and characters of this book.

I will give Cecy loads of credit. She knows how to push the emotional envelope while entertaining her readers with a heart stopping full throttle story. She twists the story so much that in the end, it left me absolutely beyond understanding but demanding more! Celia and her Wird Sisters (Taran, Shayna, and Emme) are literally tossed out of the frying pan and into the fire and they don't really get a chance to catch their breaths before yet another surprise is thrown in their direction. The sisters all have their own challenges including Shayna who is experiencing some surprising after-effects of being saved by Koda and Emme who has a decision or two to make about her love life.

It is non-stop action when it comes to the big bad Tribe coming after Celia with everything they have because she is different from any other supernatural on record. Legends of old, things you've never heard of before, disgruntled weres, vampires, witches, and even people within her supposed support system that you can't trust them as far as you can throw them. You have no clue whether or not the person standing next to you is actually your friend, or the enemy who is seeking to destroy you because you may or may not have the means to permanently end the war.

As for the romance angle, readers of this series will definitely have their favorite between Aric and Misha. Then, if that weren't enough to keep you debating who is better for Celia, Cecy totally tosses you straight through a stained glass window by adding yet another character named Tye who attempts to charm his way into her life because of a prophecy. I will say that up until a certain point, I didn't feel that Aric was in the story enough while Misha had plenty of time to sway Celia. Misha definitely bided his time and did everything under the sun and moon in order to win Celia's heart away from Aric. Aric is a restless soul who is under severe restraints thanks to the AWFUL were elders and thus he makes mistakes and stupid choices. He does have other choices, but I'm not sure if Cecy is willing to go that route just yet.

Just a fair warning to readers, I would absolutely suggest that you put away as much time as possible in order to read this book without stopping to do other things. Cecy is a true demon child who has broken my heart so many times and she goes the extra distance in Cursed by Destiny. I am not sure how I can go on without a bit of hope for a bright future for Celia and her sisters and especially the men they love. Cecy has left me in tatters and the only way I know how to fix this, is to have the next book in my greedy little hands immediately if not sooner!

I received Cursed by Destiny direct from the publisher in lieu of an honest review. No monies were paid me in advance.

*Gizmos Reviews* Guest Post for Aurora Sky: Vampire Hunter blog tour

Welcome to my stop on the Aurora Sky/Northern Bites Blog tour presented by Xpresso Book Tours. Today's stop features a guest post by Nikki Jefford on what it is like living in Alaska, as well as a giveaway. I have read both books and am really excited about the third book coming out sometime in 2014!

Guest Post by Nikki Jefford
"Maybe Nikki can write about her characters life in Alaska since she is very familiar with it."

Life in Alaska

It’s a good thing I grew up in Anchorage, otherwise I’d probably have my characters wearing big winter jackets, hats, scarves, and gloves 24/7 and put them in igloos. Okay, joking about the igloo part, but what I know from my own teens and twenties is that young adults in the Far North don’t dress for the weather. You can find them waiting outside for the bus in shorts or skirts in the dead of winter or lined up outside Chilkoot Charlie’s night club in halter tops.

Driving anywhere in the winter time requires an extra five or ten minutes of defrosting if you don’t have a garage. We had heavy snowfalls during my junior and senior years of high school and every other morning I was out with the shovel, digging my car out, dreaming of a place where I could just get in and go.

Even if the car wasn’t buried, I had to let the old girl warm up or she’d die. I had a ’77 Pontiac Catalina, which I gave to Fane Donado in the book. (The Tank.) It was too cold to sit static in the vehicle, so I’d dance around outside to keep from freezing.

That’s Anchorage. In Fairbanks it’s so cold you either leave your car running in winter or plug your engine heater into the outlets available around town when you go to work, school, or run errands.

It’s important to stay active in Alaska to avoid cabin fever. There is lots to do in the way of winter sports and hiking. I downhill skied in high school then switched to cross-country as I got older. I’ve always loved hiking. I also really, really enjoy cozying up with a book, blanket, and cup of hot chocolate when it’s really cold outside!

Worse than the cold is the darkness – leaving for school or work and it’s pitch black then returning home and it’s pitch black. The shortest day in Anchorage is about five and a half hours. It gets worse the farther north you go. Barrow doesn’t see a second of light in December or January. (I should send Aurora up that way, maybe she’ll appreciate Anchorage more.)

At this stage of the series, Aurora is about to return from boot camp in the desert. As I mentioned above, I wanted to give her an appreciation for the state. It’s a harsh climate to live in, but there’s also something vibrant and otherworldly about the Last Frontier. That crisp air makes you feel alive. It’s a great place to be undead.

Then a near-fatal car wreck changes everything. Government agents step in and save Aurora's life in exchange for her services as a vampire hunter in Alaska. Basically she's a glorified chew toy. All thanks to her rare blood type, which sends a vampire into temporary paralysis right before she has to finish the job...by hand.

Now Aurora's only friends are groupies of the undead and the only boy she can think about may very well be a vampire.

"Waiting On Wednesday” is a weekly event, hosted by Jill at “Breaking the Spine”, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

This weeks choice is----->The Assassin's Blade (Throne of Glass 0.1-0.5) by Sarah J. Maas

I think it is an extraordinary idea to put all 5 novellas into one book and release them to those like ME, who have not read them already. I love this series! I think Maas is a wonderful author and I can't to see what she does in the next release coming in 2014!

Contains all five novellas.

Celaena Sardothien is Adarlan's most feared assassin. As part of the Assassin's Guild, her allegiance is to her master, Arobynn Hamel, yet Celaena listens to no one and trusts only her fellow killer-for-hire, Sam. In these action-packed novellas - together in one edition for the first time - Celaena embarks on five daring missions. They take her from remote islands to hostile deserts, where she fights to liberate slaves and seeks to avenge the tyrannous. *Review* Galilee Rising (Galilee Falls Trilogy, #2) by Jennifer Harlow

*Synopsis*

Love in the time of superheroes...

“Our greatest glory is not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall.” -Confucius

The year since Galilee Falls lost its reigning superhero Justice has not been kind to Joanna Fallon. She's lost her best friend, her boyfriend, her badge, even her mind. The city of Galilee Falls hasn't fared much better with supervillain related crime skyrocketing to cataclysmic proportions. Deliverance for the city arrives in the guise of The Royal Triumvirate--King Tempest, Lady Liberty, and Lord Nightingale--who vow to be the heroes the city needs. Salvation for Joanna appears in the brilliant form of Dr. Jem Ambrose, another lost soul in need of saving. But salvation comes with a high price. When Emperor Cain, an old nemesis of The Triumvirate, decides he will stop at nothing to make sure there is no city left to defend, it is up to Joanna to rise not only for her city, for her new love, but for herself as well…

*My Thoughts*

*Galilee Rising was provided to me by the author Jennifer Harlow in lieu of an honest assessment of the book.*

Galilee Rising takes place almost a full year after the ending of Justice (Galilee Falls # 1). For 33 year old Joanna Fallon, her entire life has been fundamentally changed and there is no going back in time and wishing that things could be different or that she could change who she's become. Joanna went from being a disgraced cop with no boyfriends, to a billionaire thanks to her best friend Justin Pendergast's will.

Joanna is NOT the same character she was in Justice. I think the bottom line of this book is Joanna picking herself off the group and rising to the occasion to say her city from being drowned in blood. If you haven't read Justice yet, I would absolutely recommend that you do so. Joanna had her entire life changed because of the events surrounding her best friend and superhero known as Justice supposed death. No longer is she Detective Joanna Fallon member of the GFPD's Priority Homicide division. No longer is she with Harry O'Hara her former boss and former lover thanks to some really foolish indiscretions.

Because of Justin's will, Joanna is now the head of Pendergast Industries but she hasn't truly given up the feel of putting people behind bars for their transgressions. While not running Pendergast, she monitors the city for crimes against its citizens and passes on this information to the police. This leads to her involvement with a group of superheroes known as the Triumvirate (Lord Nightingale, King Tempest, and Lady Liberty) who arrive in town in order to step in for Justice and to make the citizens feel safe once again.

Galilee Falls is an interesting place to live. There are more villains and superheroes than any other place on the planet. Joanna once thought that the superheroes were the antithesis of everything she believed in. She fought hard against rallying to their side and trusting that they would do the right thing for the residents of Galilee Falls. I would say that she has come to accept the need for superheroes as a deterrent to the villains like KitKat, Alkaline, and Emperor Cain who is truly one of the more vilest and evil villains you will read about.

Joanna's life does get a little bit better with the arrival of Dr. Jem Ambrose along with Brendan and Alexia Darby. Jem is a shy, nerdy character who is more than a match for Joanna's head strong and driven character. Brendan and Alexia more than make things interesting by being a married superhero couple that befriends Joanna. I was a bit surprised by the relationship that forms between the Joanna and Jem. I was  pleasantly surprised that Harlow gave readers a happy ending which was 360 degrees different from the ending of Justice.

The last book in the series is tentatively titled Fall of Heroes and will release sometime in 2014. I am definitely on the Jennifer Harlow bandwagon. She knows how to get into characters heads and make readers understand what her characters are feeling at the time. She definitely uses adult situations and language to get her point across which absolutely does not turn me off.
