#Thursday Review - Loved It - Queen of Tomorrow by Sherry D. Ficklin (Young Adult, Historical)

Series: Stolen Empire # 2
Format: E-Galley, 280 pages
Release Date: July 14, 2015
Publisher: Clean Teen Publishing
Source: Publisher via NetGalley
Genre: Young Adult, Historical Fiction

Sophie—now Catherine, Grand Duchess of Russia—had a tough first year at Imperial Court. Married at sixteen to Grand Duke Peter, heir to the throne, and settled in their own palace, things are finally looking up. As a new day dawns, she thinks only of securing her future, and the future of their country, during one of the greatest political upheavals of her time. Fighting desperately against forces trying to depose the Empress Elizabeth and put the young Prince Ivan on her throne, Sophie soon finds herself in the middle of a war brewing between her beloved Prussia, and her new empire. But even as she navigates the fragile political landscape, she quickly realizes that she has only begun to discover the tangled web of deceit and infidelity woven over the lavish court of Oranienbaum Palace.

When a strange and delicate alliance forms between the young couple, she glimpses a future of happiness, only to see it lost in a moment at the hands of those who still seek to end her life—and prevent her reign. Out of favor with the empress and running out of options, Sophie will have to sacrifice her own innocence on the altar of Russia if she is to save the nation, and herself. To survive, she will have to do the unthinkable, betray those closest to her and become something greater and more dangerous than she ever imagined she could be… a queen.

Queen of Tomorrow is the second installment in the Stolen Empire trilogy by author Sherry D. Ficklin. Queen of Tomorrow is a loosely based YA historical fiction about the rise of Russian Empress Catherine II. Catherine was the longest serving female ruler in Russian history (July 9, 1762-November 17, 1796). A fact that sometimes gets downplayed by the way she loved, the way she lived, the number of men she took to her bed, and the way she came to power on the back of a coup that overthrew her first husband.

It has been a fairly busy year since Sophie Friederike Auguste became Duchess Catherine and married her childhood friend Peter III, who is now the Grand Duke and a slimy toad who has no compassion for Catherine, or their sham of a marriage. Peter has refused to lay with Catherine in order to have a heir, hoping that she will be declared barren by the Empress and then he can move on to his current mistress, Elizavetta.

One should not hesitate to call Catherine out on her own instances of infidelity or hearts desire or wanting to actually be happy. Then again, when your own husband is a scoundrel, you do what needs to be done. What needs to be done, is that Catherine finally becomes pregnant by her hearts desire which is supposed to secure Empress Elizabeth's throne and the Romanov line. Too bad someone else had plans for Catherine.

Catherine is a likable character because she doesn't act like a spoiled teen aged brat. She remains focused, she rises to every single challenge, including a really harsh scene that had me screaming. She's forced to play a real life game of Chess with Empress who doesn't exactly play nice. She has the will power of 10 girls her age. As she comes to understand that it is her heart, and her appeal, and her love for the Russian people, that will finally gain her the title she needs in order to live; Empress of Russia.

Ficklin gets the era she is writing about. Oh sure, she takes her own freelances with certain characters, and situations, but the idea behind the Oranienbaum and Winter Palaces and their descriptions are realistic. Ficklin has taken Catherine's story, and added her own mix of court intrigue, betrayal, romance, suspense, and situations that I wouldn't exactly jump up and down for joy over. But, alas, this was the era that women were expected to submit fully and entirely to their husbands. Catherine's allies in this series have actually expanded from the first book.

I am definitely eager to read Queen of Always once I can get my grabby hands on it. I am eager to see how Ficklin resolves the issues she's laid out for readers. I am eager to see Catherine rise even further and avoid any further destructive situations with her so called husband. And, I am eager to see if Ficklin follows along with history by having Catherine fall in love with one of the new characters introduced in this book.

#Wednesday Review - The Clouded Sky by Megan Crewe (Young Adult, Science Fiction)

Series: Earth & Sky # 2
Format: E-Galley, 354 pages
Release Date: May 5, 2015
Publisher: Skyscape
Source: Publisher via NetGalley
Genre: Young Adult, Science Fiction

When seventeen-year-old Skylar escapes the time-bending Enforcers who secretly control Earth, her troubles have just begun. She and her friend Win take refuge on Win’s home space station with his fellow rebels, but the fate of Skylar’s planet still spins out of her control.

To avoid detection, Skylar poses as the Earthling “pet” of Win’s rival, an arrogant boy named Jule. Homesick and faced with a cool reception from the other rebels, she throws herself into the group’s mission: assembling a weapon to disable Earth’s restrictive time field. Gradually, Skylar’s skill for detail gains respect—even from Jule, who is more vulnerable than he lets on.

Yet challenges spring from every side. Not only must Sky navigate the muddy waters of romance, but suspicions of betrayal grow among the rebels as their work narrowly misses sabotage.

In the latest in Megan Crewe’s Earth & Sky series, can Skylar expose the traitor before time runs out and Earth is destroyed?

The Clouded Sky is the second installment in Megan Crewe's Earth & Sky trilogy. The story itself picks up immediately after the ending of Earth & Sky. 17-year old Skylar Ross has managed to catch the attention of a group of Interplanetary rebels looking to stop the Council of Kemya from continuing its experiments on Earth's time field. They, or should I say Skylar and (Dar)Win, have time traveled across several different countries & eras, avoided the hated Enforcers who control earth, and successfully searched for parts of a weapon that can be used to destroy the time field surrounding Earth.

For Skylar, her next journey includes a trip to the Kemya home world. Or, shall I call it the Kemya space station where the Kemyatans now live after they destroyed their own home world. You should know that the story mostly takes place on the Kemya space station. In order to explain her appearance on the station, Skylar must pose as a pet to Jule, a minor secondary character from the first book. Here on the station, humans have no rights. They are put into zoos and studied.

We watch as Skylar pretends to be a pet so that she can go places where the other rebels can't go. She learns the technology and the language so that she knows what is happening. She learns how to pilot a shuttle, and goes on an important mission. Readers should give Skylar a whole lot of credit for what she does. She gets ignored, but keeps coming back. She pushes for answers as to who is betraying them, and discovers that persons identity before anyone else.

One of the main things that drove me crazy in this book, besides the slow pacing, was Crewe's twisted romance switch. It was pretty apparent, at least to me, that Skylar and Win had some sort of connection in the first book. Now that they are on the station, it is Jule who becomes Skylar's romantic interest while Win is on the outsider looking in. I can't judge the feelings the two characters have for each other. Jule isn't the tool I thought he was in the previous book. He is also a character who has a whole lot going on.

Can I just say that the ending blew me away? Literally. It blew me away with the extent that Crewe changes Skylar's future, and that of her friends, and family, and the series in general. I suspected the traitor from the beginning, but I didn't know the extent that this person would go to proving a point. I found myself really liking Isis, Britta, and even Tabzi. I love that the mystery isn't resolved until the last scene.

Next up: A Sky Unbroken

#Tuesday Review - Rogue by Julie Kagawa (Young Adult, Fantasy

Series: Talon # 2
Format: E-Galley, 444 pages
Release Date: April 28, 2015
Publisher: Harlequin Teen
Source: Publisher via NetGalley
Genre: Young Adult, Fantasy

Deserter. Traitor. Rogue.

Ember Hill left the dragon organization Talon to take her chances with rebel dragon Cobalt and his crew of rogues. But Ember can’t forget the sacrifice made for her by the human boy who could have killed her—Garret Xavier Sebastian, a soldier of the dragon slaying Order of St. George, the boy who saved her from a Talon assassin, knowing that by doing so, he’d signed his own death warrant.

Determined to save Garret from execution, Ember must convince Cobalt to help her break into the Order’s headquarters. With assassins after them and Ember’s own brother helping Talon with the hunt, the rogues find an unexpected ally in Garret and a new perspective on the underground battle between Talon and St. George.

A reckoning is brewing and the secrets hidden by both sides are shocking and deadly. Soon Ember must decide: Should she retreat to fight another day…or start an all-out war?

Rogue is the second of five apparent installments in the Talon series by author Julie Kagawa. The author tells her story via several different narratives; Garret Xavier Sebastian, Ember and Dante Hill, and a flashback to when Riley/Cobalt was a dangerous operative for the organization he now wants to see taken down. As we open the story, while Garret is facing a court martial by the organization that he has served faithfully for years as the Perfect Soldier, Ember makes plans to rescue him with a little help.

Never once had Garret disobeyed a direct order, but that changed when he met Ember, and became guilty of treason for allowing his heart to guide his actions by not killing her when he had the chance. Garret has since learned that almost everything he's been told about dragons was false. Dragons like Ember are not monsters. They just want to be left alone to live their own lives without worrying about being stalked to death. He's fallen for Ember. So much so that he is rightly heart broken that another has taken up so much of her feelings.

Ember, who has since gone Rogue, has been twisted, and shoved in two different directions by her separate halves (Human and Dragon), refuses to allow Garret to pay the ultimate price for saving her life. She lays out a risky plan to rescue him with the help of Riley and Wes. Talon will do anything to get her Ember. I still don't understand the point of Talon's obsession with Ember, but alas, there you are. Ember is still a teenager at heart even though she was trained to become a deadly Viper. She make mistakes. She makes fly by night choices. It's part of what being a teenager is all about. You live, you learn, you grow up, you make your own choices and live with them.

Riley, never one to let Ember decide her own way or make her own decisions, joins the foray into rescuing the man, Garret, who has killed so many of his kind. What I really liked about Rogue is that Kagawa gives Riley a unique opportunity to explain to readers why he is so mad at Talon, and why he would do anything to see them taken down and destroyed. I get his rage. Especially towards Garrett who he can't trust. I get his desire for Ember as well. What I don't get is the obsession Kagawa has for older men, and much, much, younger girls.

Our final character is Dante Hill. Oh, Dante how I loathe you with every single fiber of my very being. You have fallen into the clutches of the evil empire, and they are close to turning you into a Sith Lord who will hunt down his own sister because she's seen the light and truth about Talon. You have grabbed power and really believe that you are doing the right thing. Dante, you need to be enlightened and saved from your own self. It is my fervent hope that you come to your senses before anything bad happens.

I'll just get to my point now. I don't get Kagawa's obsession with young girls and much, much older men. Think about that for a moment. Thank about the Iron Fey series. Who was the protagonist, and who was the person she ended up with? Think about the Blood of Eden series as well. Same. Now, here we have Ember, who is fighting both her human side with Garret her own age, and her dragon side with Riley a much more experience and older dragon. I personally think this is an unnecessary amount of story space that is being taken up by silliness.

There is a fair amount of action, intrigue, suspense, twisted storylines, and a bit of an wanted love triangle romance in Talon. There are action sequences when Ember, Riley, and Wes are rescuing Garret. When Talon is chasing after the group and Ember meets her match. When Ember and Riley are put into a position of fighting against their own people who really want Ember to come back to their organization. There is also heart break, but alas, that item I won't cover or spoil since this is only the second book in the series.

I appreciate authors who summarize previous events. I think Kagawa explains what happened previously well so that you can jump right into this story and move along with her storyline without missing anything. I do recommend, however, that readers new to this series start with Talon before picking up Rogue. Next up is Soldier, releasing in 2016.

#Blog Tour/Review/Giveaway - Wilde Card by Jenn Stark (Paranormal Romance)

Series: Immortal Vegas # 2
Format: Digital E-Book, 236 pages
Release Date: November 17, 2015
Publisher: Elewyn Publishing
Source: Barclay Publishing
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Digital ISBN: 978-1-9437-6802-8

Synopsis:

All that glitters may not be gold.
When an antique gold show comes to Vegas, Tarot-reading magical artifacts hunter Sara Wilde’s job is simple: locate and liberate a set of relics rumored to give their bearers access to an ancient, incredible power. With whispers of a war on magic racing through the Connected community, every psychic, mystic, warlock, and witch descends on Sin City to claim the relics first. But no one wants these talismans more than Sara’s client: the insufferably arrogant, criminally sensual, absolutely untrustworthy Magician.
And what the Magician wants…
Sara’s heist takes a turn for the trickier as the smoky-eyed specter from her past, Detective Brody Rooks, is assigned to investigate a break-in at the gold show, forcing her to confront the one man in Vegas she can’t bluff. Even worse, just as she finally gets her hands on the goods, the game changes anew. The resulting chase leads her across the world to an ancient Egyptian temple filled with secrets, deception… and hints about her own abilities that could change everything. Desperate for answers, Sara is forced to turn to the one person she knows will lie, cheat, manipulate and steal to get whatever he craves. Only now, it seems, the Magician wants her.
Sometimes, when the deck is stacked against you… you’ve got to play the Wilde Card.

Wilde Card is the second installment in Jenn Stark's Immortal Vegas series featuring Tarot card reading relic hunter Sara Wilde. Sara, as we have learned, has the unique ability to use her cards as a compass to find anything. We have also learned that Sara will do anything to protect the innocents called Connecteds from being hunted down and killed by a powerful group known as the Sanctus.

Sara's primary employer is the Arcana Council led by the mysterious, and powerful Magician Armaeus Bertrand. As the story opens, Sara is once again on a mission to locate a valuable and powerful artifact in China. This time it's the Crown of Genghis Khan. Although it's not the main part of the story, it's still provides a major clue that will eventually show up later in the story. I don't believe I am spoiling anything since I am not telling you what the clue is.

The most important part of this story is the arrival of The Rarity to Las Vegas for the first time in recent memory. The Rarity brings in all sorts of investors, collectors, arcane artifact marketers, and various collectors of black market goods. It also brings enemies to town like flocks of seagulls. Sara, who is still dealing with the after effects of Getting Wilde, is also required to be High Priestess Eshe tool, saving the Connected, and facing a huge piece of her past that she still hasn't solved yet.

I love this series and can't wait for the third installment, called Born to be Wilde, coming February 2016. I love Sarah. I love her sarcasm, her wits, her courage, her unknown magical powers that grow leaps and bounds each novel. I love the fact that she stands Guardian for those who can't protect herself against those like Sanctus. I love that she uses the money she makes in searching for artifacts to help more Connecteds. I love that she tries hard not to be anyone's pawn.
I love that this series is based on Arcana Tarot cards like the Musician, The Fool, The Devil, etc. I do hope that we get a chance to meet the missing Arcana members. Loved that there is a DRAGON in this story! A DRAGON. IN. LAS VEGAS! Think on that. I am tempted by the possibilities for Sara. Especially since the ending is rather enlightening. I definitely want to know more about Sara and the Dragon and what happened to her 10 years ago that made her flee her hometown. I want to know if Stark will allow Sara a bit of romance with either Detective Brody, who I like, or Armaeus who seems to be able to push all the right buttons. Best of all, I love fact that Sara is finally home, and can stop running.

Chapter One

I couldn’t breathe. I couldn’t even blink. Six foot two of hard-bodied ex–Special Forces operative was snugged up against my backside, and I was totally falling for him.
For about eight thousand more feet.
My helmet crackled. “You’re doing great.”
“Unghflun.” Worse, we were still spinning. They’d told me the spinning would stop, but it didn’t feel like it was stopping. It felt like we were dying. And of all the ways to die, French-kissing a cliff at a hundred miles per hour had not made my short list. It gave a whole new meaning to the phrase “terminal” velocity.
“Right on target.”
Something shuddered above us, and I shifted from sprawl to nearly vertical in a sudden blur. I squinted up past the man carabinered to me in not nearly enough places, to see that our parachute had deployed.
That would be the “Low Opening” portion of this joyride into the Siberian mountain range surrounding Lake Baikal. The “High Altitude” section had been covered by our plunging six-mile drop from a souped-up jet now well on its way to Beijing.
Getting off this rock without alerting the local military would be its own special kind of crazy, but I was down for that. Pretty much any kind of crazy that got me away from Vegas and the Arcana Council for a few days worked for me.
“Drop point,” echoed in my ear.
Beside us, two other barely discernible shadows rocketed through the predawn gloom. We were aiming for a strip of gravel tucked between two sheer cliffs where, according to my client, X marked the spot for the ultimate Mongolian treasure: the crown of Genghis Khan. Rumored to give its wearer the Khan’s magical mojo for protection, abundance, and crazy long life.
Then again, said crown was apparently resting on the head of a dead guy right now. So there was that.
Another crackle in my helmet. “Bend your knees.”
“If I had a dollar…”
My guide’s laughter carried through our final several hundred feet of descent, and suddenly we were on the ground, a tumble of arms, legs, and high-tech padding. With impressive military precision, mission leader Zander “Call me Zee” James broke up with me without remorse, thrusting me aside. I lurched drunkenly to my knees as he slowed his run then turned to his parachute and punched it into submission.
The other men landed beside us, neatly outrunning their chutes, and I ducked to avoid a fine spray of rocks stirred up by the movement. Zee stripped off his HALO suit, oxygen mask and gear like he was shimmying out of swim trunks, and shoved them into a we-were-never-here-sized nylon bagel for easy transport out. He flapped his hand at me for mine and I shoved them at him in a big ball. “Report?” he snapped.
Zee’s right-hand man squinted down at a device attached to his wrist. “No heat signatures,” he said, aiming the thing at the rock wall. “Wall” was being kind. The cliff face surged up as if an angry god had punched through the earth’s crust, all crags and fissures and sharp edges. “Seismic activity currently stable.”
As if to counter his words, another crackle of falling rocks sounded high above us. “Right.” Zee squinted up. “At dawn, this place’ll light up like the surface of the sun. We don’t want to be here for that. We get in, we get out, we get gone.” His gaze shifted to me. “Ready?”
I nodded, then tugged down the zipper of my tech suit to fetch my own tools of the trade, my trusty pack of Tarot cards.
With the deck as my compass, I could find about anything—for a price. As it happened, a hundred G was a heck of a price. That kind of money translated to at least three more Connecteds hidden away from the dark practitioners who wanted to use them for spare parts. Not enough to save them all, no. But enough to count. I had to believe that.
“Sometime today, princess.”
Double-tasking one set of fingers to offer Zee my opinion of his people management skills, I used the other to pull a scatter of cards out of the deck.

Here we go.

#Saturday Review - The Eternity Key by Bree Despain (Young Adult, Mythology)

Series: Into the Dark # 2
Format: E-Galley, 368 pages
Release Date: May 12, 2015
Publisher: Edmont USA
Source: Publisher via NetGalley
Genre: Young Adult, Fantasy, Mythology

Fan-favorite author Bree Despain continues her modern-day romance trilogy inspired by the Greek myth of Persephone and Hades with this second book in her Into the Dark series.

Haden Lord, the disgraced Prince of the Underrealm, has chosen love over honor and will do everything in his power to protect Daphne Raines, the human girl he was supposed to bring to the Underrealm. Haden’s choice is put to the test as the Skylords and a figure from his past arrive in Olympus Hills with a plan that could destroy all of the realms.

Embracing her destiny as the Cypher, Daphne begins to understand the immense power of her musical ability to control the elements, but she must come to terms with her feelings for Haden and what she must sacrifice in order to protect him and her friends.

Believing the Key of Hades is the only thing that can stop the Underrealm Court from releasing the monstrous Keres on the mortal world, Haden, Daphne, and their friends set out to find the Key before Persephone’s Gate opens again on the spring equinox.

The Eternity Key is the second installment in Bree Despain's Into The Dark series. The series, based on the Greek tale of Persephone and Hades, features Haden Lord, fallen Prince of the Underrealm, and Daphne Raines, the human girl who has discovered that she has powers as the Cypher, to find the lost Key of Hades, better known as The Eternity Key. The story picks up several weeks after The Shadow Prince.

Haden, and Daphne have collected a little army of their own to face the Skylords, Underlords, and any other lords that come after them. Besides Haden, and Daphne, the group includes Tobin, Lexie, Garrick, and Dax. I suppose I should mention that Brim (the cat) and Daphne's father Joe are part of this group as well. Readers should also be warned that Despain loves to use triple narratives to tell her tale.

The three main characters therefore are Daphne, Haden, and Tobin. I will say that while the opening act is rather slow, it is insightful if you have forgotten what happened in the previous installment. I'm all in when it comes to an author summarizing events before going forth in the storyline. With so much as stake, the group has returned to Olympus Hills where they continue to search for the missing key and try to find a way to retrieve the Compass that was stolen from them.

They know they are under a deadline of the spring equinox to locate it. They also know that they are being watched closely by the Skylords who can control the rain and lightning. They also know that the Underrealm wants the key to unleash the Keres.

Now to the meat of the review. Despain is a brilliant strategist and storyteller. She has a whole lot of players just waiting on the sidelines to pounce on our heroes. We get some mysterious new characters that may or not be allies, we get some old characters that are just amazing in their villainous ways, and a heart breaking and earth shattering betrayal that reminded me of when Anakin Skywalker betrayed the Jedi and Yoda.

I think one of the most interesting things about this story is the family issues that Daphne, Tobin, and a lesser extent, Haden have to deal with. Haden has pretty much burned any bridges to his former realm by choosing not to bring Daphne back to his father. Daphne's father, Joe, made a deal with the devil to become a rock star, and is still paying for his errors in judgement.

He claims he is trying to make up for his mistakes, yet, I still have no reason to trust him. Tobin's parents are just as horrible. Imagine selling your own daughter as a Boon. I respect that Tobin spends much of his time trying to find her. I truly hope he gets that happy ending.

After Egmont USA shuttered its doors, I am pensive in my hope that Despain will find a way to release the third book in this series. I haven't seen anything to indicate whether or not it will be released but we do need to find a way to wrap up this series after THAT ending that has changed everything for nearly every single character.
