Detective Jessica Niemi has taken some time off from her work with the Helsinki police to track down the coven that nearly killed her, and her partner, Yusuf, is assigned to lead the investigation. But as Yusuf delves into the case, he realizes he needs Jessica’s help. And as they dig deeper, they realize that the evil they’ve been hunting all along has returned and is lying in wait for the right moment to strike.

The Last Grudge, by author Max Seeck, is the third installment in the authors Jessica Niemi trilogy. Once again, this story takes place mostly around Helsinki, Finland in 2020, and you may encounter words that you don't quite understand. Powerful executive Eliel Zetterborg has been found murdered in his upscale Helsinki home. What at first seems like a straightforward case soon proves to be anything but when it becomes clear the murderer has other targets. The only clue the police have is a photo of Zetterborg with three men whose faces have all been scratched off.

A month ago, Detective Jessica Niemi, was assaulted and attacked by a group lead by Camilla Adlerkreutz, and badly injured to the point where her sanity is being tested on a daily basis by the appearance of her dead mother. She has taken some time off from her work with the Helsinki police to track down the coven that nearly killed her, and her partner, Yusuf and maybe think about what her future is going to look like. Jessica is haunted by her dark past from 20 years ago, and a coven of witches with horns intent on destroying her and she won't be safe until she is sure that Camilla and her group has been found and defeated.

Meanwhile, Detective Sergeant Yusuf Pepple is assigned as lead investigator into Eliel Zetterborg's murder. He’s slightly unsure of himself in a leadership role. Along the way, he learns things about himself as well as his co-workers Nina, Tanya, Rasmus, and Jami Harjula. The high-profile murder leads to another and the investigative team becomes concerned that the bodies are going to start stacking up, time is of the essence. As Yusuf delves into the case, he realizes he needs Jessica’s help. But Jessica finds herself in dire straits and needing rescuing.

But true to form, the clues aren't answering questions so much as adding questions to the investigation. As a key piece of the mystery is revealed by the author, you will need to pay attention to the characters that are mentioned, as well as a key character in the beginning, as well as the ending. Apparently, this is the final book in the series which is also called Ghosts of the Past. Even though the mystery is wrapped up, there are other items that are left open ended, and I'll leave that alone for fear of spoiling the end game.

1

The car of the old elevator thunks between floors. The cable hums at the ceiling.

Greedy old shit.

Eliel Zetterborg catches a whiff of his bodyguard's powerful aftershave and turns up his nose. He thinks about the words painted on the placards he saw through the Maybach's tinted windows an hour ago.

He clenches and unclenches his fists; his hands feel weak. Those ungrateful idiots don't know what they're talking about.

Eliel steps out of the elevator and crosses the short distance to his front door, key in hand. Joonas shuts the elevator gate behind him. Eliel feels a pang of nostalgia when he hears the metal clank. The sound reminds him of the mechanical equipment of days gone by, iron and metal parts that smelled of lubricant and were powered by springs, steam, or mere gravity to perform work on people's behalf. In contrast, present-day technology is completely odorless and tasteless. Machines you could touch with your hand have turned into a series of elegant algorithms and mechanisms whose functioning is guided by principles so abstract that advertising and marketing professionals have to create beautiful stories around them to inject the tiniest hint of life. Even then, customers have only the faintest idea of how they work. No matter what these millennials say, things were better in the old days.

You killed this town, Zetterborg.

When Eliel Zetterborg founded EZEM Pipes Co. with Eetu Monto fifty years ago to the day, the name of a company still communicated its primary business. Back then, no one fiddled with computers at the machine works in the Herttoniemi industrial area; they hammered and turned parts used to build something real, something tangible. Not circuits or transistors, but industry that reeked of blood and sweat. Heavy industry-in its most literal sense.

Eliel shuts his eyes and imagines the sweet smell of red-hot metal, hears the splatter of welding at the rear of the manufacturing hall on the south side of Puusepänkatu.

"Will you be all right?" Joonas says with a discreet glance around the stairwell.

Joonas Lamberg is Eliel's long-term driver and bodyguard and is escorting his employer to his front door on this evening as on every other. He will then wait at the wheel of the Maybach down on the street until Eliel is ready. Then Joonas will drive Eliel to tonight's dinner venue, a restaurant located only a block from the latter's apartment. Joonas would typically be heading home at this point, but the times are exceptional: so many members of the general public hate Eliel Zetterborg and the board of RealEst from the bottom of their hearts that it's best to keep Joonas close at hand all evening.

"Yes, thank you. I'll see you downstairs in a minute," Eliel says, then opens the door to his apartment and taps the code into the alarm system.

Joonas gives a curt nod, peers up to the top floor, then starts descending the stairs. He does so every evening because he wants to make sure no one who doesn't belong there has snuck into the stairwell. Joonas is loyal and conscientious. He's a former SWAT unit officer and still dangerous, despite being almost fifty and unarmed.

Eliel Zetterborg knocks his shoes against the mat in the entryway and takes off his coat, the shoulders damp from the walk between the car and the building entrance. The apartment smells like a new fabric softener he asked the cleaner to buy. It masks the cloying, stale odor of antiques and upholstery dating from the war, as the scent has recently begun to repel Eliel. It reminds him that he is old and that he-just like everyone else on the planet-is condemned to die sooner or later. In his case sooner, no doubt. Ever since Anne-Marie passed, his days have felt like a slow slide toward death; it's as if his heart is beating less and less frequently, until one night it will stop and release him from his pain.

Eliel's eyes strike on a yellow plastic bag on the floor of the entryway. The cleaner was supposed to return the books to the Rikhardinkatu Library that morning and pick up the new ones he had reserved.

Hell's bells. That woman is getting careless.

Eliel steps into the living room, stands there with his hands in his pockets, and lets out a deep sigh. The company's anniversary has put him in a nostalgic mood.

Half a century. Over that time, RealEst has grown into a global corporation, and it's difficult these days to find any similarities to the small machine shop he and Eetu founded fifty years before.

The year 1970 was like a different reality in every respect: under the Finlandization policeis of President Urho Kekkonen, the country was a very different place from what it is today, for better or for worse. In his parents' view, no doubt the latter. Eliel Zetterborg's father covered politics for Finland's largest daily, Helsingin Sanomat, and was a huge champion of freedom of the press. His mother enjoyed a prominent career as a playwright. The artistic, liberal Zetterborgs experienced the postwar atmosphere as oppressive and regressive, perhaps partly because their only son, Eliel, actively opposed the self-censorship the Finnish government practiced when it came to the Soviet Union. On the other hand, EZEM Pipes Co.-which became RealEst, Ltd., through a merger and IPO that took place in the spring of 1990-benefited greatly, especially in the 1980s, from bilateral trade between Finland and its eastern neighbor, a development that shaped Eliel's views of the Soviet Union in a significantly more positive way. As long as Finland's neighbor to the east was satisfied, business was good.

Opportunistic traitor.

Eliel knows he is a prime example of how ideology is cast aside in hopes of the fast profits offered by capitalism. Over the years, he has been accused of selling out his principles so many times by so many people that he doesn't let it get to him anymore. Besides, the accusations are true-even if decades have passed since then. But he regrets nothing, not for a second. His decisions made it possible for Anne-Marie and him to live a life of extreme privilege, and for Axel to be raised-unlike Eliel-in a wealthy, luxurious home. Sometimes Eliel wonders if rockier soil would have produced a different sort of son. Is their relationship difficult because their lives started out in such dissimilar circumstances?

Eliel pauses at the large mirror and gazes at the furrowed face hidden behind the white beard. His phone is flashing on top of the console, but Eliel doesn't intend to answer. His phone has been ringing off the hook today. Journalists, well-wishers, professional and amateur politicians, almost-friends, backstabbers. Parasites. It's a big day for Finnish industry and RealEst: at this very moment, the company's middle management is celebrating in a massive tent erected at Hietalahti Square, complete with a program of entertainment. The upper management and board of directors, on the other hand, are gathering for dinner with their spouses in the private dining room at Saslik, the venerable Russian restaurant right around the corner, in honor of the day.

Job killer.

Eliel closes his eyes and tries to forget.

He can still see them, the white placards reflecting the bright sunshine. There are dozens of them, and they are being held by hundreds of hands. Every insult in the world has been scrawled on them in large letters. Thousands of people have amassed outside the factory, and none of them are there to celebrate the company's fifty-year success story. The din raised by the angry throng is earsplitting, and the union man at the front is conducting this racket with a megaphone.

Eliel opens his eyes and feels his heart hammering. The ingrates. Of course it's a radical measure, but it was not taken lightly. If the factory could have been spared, it would have been. The board's decision to shut down the Kouvola unit had nothing to do with saving production costs; plumbing-material operations are being ramped down for the simple reason that they're not profitable. The factory, which employs nearly three thousand people, has been a money pit for a decade now, and the positive results in the other divisions are not sufficient justification to continue keeping it on life support into the hazy future. Presumably a bigger problem than the closing of the factory is that those who lose their jobs will be nearly impossible to place in the company's other divisions. That's how significantly RealEst, Ltd.'s operations have changed over the last ten years. Even if the company pays for costly training, there is no way a fifty-year-old metalworker is going to learn how to produce a single line of code. At least not fast enough.

Get out of Finland, you capitalist pig.

Eliel sighs. He reads the text message he received fifteen minutes ago. It's from Axel.

On my way to the restaurant. Please don't be late.

He considers his son. The boy's fine features and unique voice, which is surprisingly high. It has a tinge of jazzy whisky bass, just like that of Anne-Marie, from whom the boy also inherited his beautiful face and his birdlike build.

The curious heartburn that troubled Eliel throughout the drive has started again. The visit to Kouvola was not, he will admit, particularly pleasant. He knows he will not be serving as chair of the RealEst board for even a year, which is the precise reason he was prepared to take this bullet. The condemnation of the entire nation. His successor will start from a clean slate and perhaps even have the backing of the labor unions. That will make it possible to steer RealEst on to future success.

Eliel considers his reply, then settles for tapping an OK into the text field.

Just then he feels a sharp pain in his chest. For a moment he feels as if he can't breathe. He collapses onto the stool in the entryway.

Damn it.

Eliel is in splendid physical condition for a seventy-four-year-old-he recently ran a half-marathon in the senior division in two hours and fourteen minutes-but the idea of long restaurant dinners with ten-course menus and the accompanying wines wearies him body and soul. He probably ought to have his heart checked again, but Eliel looks askance at doctor visits and avoids them to the last. Damn it all to hell. If it weren't the company's fiftieth anniversary today, he would sink to the couch with a glass of whisky and watch Emmerdale.

Eliel advances slowly down the entry hall and into the living room. The long floor planks, stained brown, creak under his merino wool socks. He touches the light switch and the chandelier hanging from the ceiling comes to life. He undoes his cuff links and lets his sleeves dangle over his hands.

The needle of the record player lowers to the black disc. Johann Sebastian Bach: Siciliano, Concerto in D minor, Bach-Werke-Verzeichnis 596. Eliel thinks it the most beautiful piece of music ever composed. Listening to it feels almost masochistic-that's how wistful and melancholy it makes him. The concerto brings him back to Anne-Marie's funeral, when Axel's cousin played it on the piano at the beginning of the memorial service, here in this very room three or so years ago. More than a thousand long days and nights have passed since then, but the apartment still smells of Anne-Marie. In the end, it makes no difference what brand of fabric softener the cleaner buys.

Anne-Marie.

He ought to wear something tonight that reminds him of Anne-Marie.

Eliel walks past the grand piano to the sofa set and pauses in front of the oil painting that hangs there. The depiction of a capercaillie hinges outward to reveal a safe embedded in the wall. Eliel taps in the code, and the safe beeps and opens.

He takes from the top shelf what is perhaps his most prized possession: a Vacheron Constantin Genève with an eighteen-karat gold casing. The watch probably has little monetary worth, but it has all the more sentimental value: Anne-Marie gave it to him as a wedding present in 1969.

Eliel senses the weight of the watch on his wrist; it feels foreign yet familiar. He returns to the grand piano and gazes at the spacious living room: the Persian carpets covering the floor, the furniture fashioned by hand long ago, the large oil paintings ensconced in decorative gilt frames.

Eliel has no interest in attending the party tonight. Not without his wife.

And then he hears something above the music.

He has stopped at the liquor cabinet next to the piano, but the floor is still creaking. As if there were a second-long lag between his footfalls and the sound they produced.

He holds his breath. Suddenly he's sure he's not alone in the apartment. He glances back, but the arch leading into the kitchen is empty. The kitchen is dark; the only glimmer comes from the windows facing the Russian embassy. Eliel shakes his head. It's just the Jugendstil building; old structures live a life of their own.

J. S. Bach is playing in the background as beautifully as it does every night.

My mind is playing tricks on me. It's been a long day.

Eliel opens the bar, reaches for the masculine, broad-shouldered bottle of Macallan Reflexion. If the sensation in his chest grows unbearable, he'll cancel his attendance at tonight's dinner. That's one good thing about growing old: there's always an acceptable excuse for getting out of doing things one would prefer not to do. Age itself. No one can have anything to say about that.

The brown liquor burbles to the bottom of the glass like water from a pure tundra stream.

And the wooden floor is creaking again, this time more distinctly. He tosses back the contents of the glass, and the plummy whisky burns his throat.

"Hello?" Eliel says forcefully, despite knowing there will be no reply. The last time he did so, Anne-Marie was still alive. On a night he came home and wasn't sure if his wife was there or out.

Eliel lowers the tumbler to the liquor cabinet and coughs into his fist.

Of course he's home alone. The alarm was on when he stepped in, and he would have heard the front door open.

"Hello?" he hears himself say again. He knows he wouldn't if he were a hundred percent certain there was no one else in the apartment. The doubt is like a rapier at his breast. "Who's there?"

This time the creak comes from the other side of the wall, from the kitchen. A dragging sound that ends in an abrupt clunk. A kitchen drawer.

Eliel feels a shiver surge up his spine to his neck.

In fact, I dare say that the romance a bit on the heavy side of things, unlike the Elemental Assassin series.

#Review - Murder at Haven's Rock by Kelley Armstrong #Mystery #Suspense

Series: Haven's Rock (#1)
Format: Hardcover, 352 pages
Release Date: February 21, 2023
Publisher: Minotaur Books

Genre: Mystery / Suspense

Haven’s Rock, Yukon. Population: 0

Deep in the Yukon wilderness, a town is being built. A place for people to disappear, a fresh start from a life on the run. Haven’s Rock isn’t the first town of this kind, something detective Casey Duncan and her husband, Sheriff Eric Dalton, know first-hand. They met in the original town of Rockton. But greed and deception led the couple to financing a new refuge for those in need. This time around, they get to decide which applicants are approved for residency.

There’s only one rule in Haven’s Rock: stay out of the forest. When two of the town's construction crew members break it and go missing, Casey and Eric are called in ahead of schedule to track them down. When a body is discovered, well-hidden with evidence of foul play, Casey and Eric must find out what happened to the dead woman, and locate those still missing. The longer Casey and Eric don’t know what happened, the more danger everyone is in.

Murder at Haven's Rock, by author Kelley Armstrong, is the first novel is the author's Haven's Rock series, which is a spin-off from the authors Rockton series. The story is once again set in the Yukon wilderness. Key characters are: Casey Duncan, Eric Dalton, Will Anders, Storm, Yolanda, and April. Here is a 411 summary of what you can expect. Haven's Rock was Casey's idea and dream. It is supposed to be a sanctuary for those who are in desperate need of safety and security, and not under the control of a cabal of wealthy people protecting wealthy people who committed crimes.

Thanks to Emilie, Casey, and April's inheritance, Haven's Rock is slowly coming to fruition. Unfortunately, Casey and Eric get one of the worst welcomes they could imagine. Two workers are missing; an architect named Penny, and an engineer named Bruno. Haven's Rock has one and only one rule; DON'T WANDER INTO THE FOREST! Haven's Rock is far from opening, but the workers are busy trying to meet Yolanda's deadline so that they can all receive a bonus. Then Casey and Eric stumble across a body of an unknown woman who is not a member of the crew.

Then, they come across a miner who is secretly trying to make a claim in an area that likely has gold. In Canada, there are rules to follow, and said miner had other ideas. To make matters even more interesting, Haven's Rock has a curious neighbor named Lilith, as well as her wolf Nero. I guarantee we will see Lilith again. Following a similar storyline as the previous story, Casey has to begin with interviewing the 30 member team who is working to put the town together. Anyone of them could be a murderer.

One could honestly say that the newest cast members to watch are Yolanda, Kendra and Gunnar and I won't explain why because they all have some interesting characteristics. Each of them has their own personal reasons for being here, and whether they continue in the next book in this series is to be revealed later. If you enjoyed Rockton and wanted it to continue then you will certainly enjoy this new town of Haven's Rock. The mystery was good, had some twists and turns, and did keep me guessing and engaged.

#Review - The Last Orphan by Gregg Hurwitz #Thrillers / #Suspense

Series: Orphan X (#8)
Format: Hardcover, 352 pages
Release Date: February 14, 2023
Publisher: Minotaur Books

Genre: Thrillers / Suspense

Evan Smoak returns in The Last Orphan, the latest New York Times bestselling Orphan X thriller--when everything changes and everything is at risk.

As a child, Evan Smoak was plucked out of a group home, raised and trained as an off-the-books assassin for the government as part of the Orphan program. When he broke with the program and went deep underground, he left with a lot of secrets in his head that the government would do anything to make sure never got out.

When he remade himself as The Nowhere Man, dedicated to helping the most desperate in their times of trouble, Evan found himself slowly back on the government's radar. Having eliminated most of the Orphans in the program, the government will stop at nothing to eliminate the threat they see in Evan. But Orphan X has always been several steps ahead of his pursuers.

Until he makes one little mistake...

Now the President has him in her control and offers Evan a deal - eliminate a rich, powerful man she says is too dangerous to live and, in turn, she'll let Evan survive. But when Evan left the Program he swore to only use his skills against those who really deserve it. Now he has to decide what's more important - his principles or his life.

The Last Orphan, by Gregg Hurwitz, is the 8th installment in the authors Orphan X series. After flying to Iceland to get a rare drink of vodka that is only served on the icy mountains, The Nowhere Man, aka Orphan X, former government assassin, is on his way to visit Mia Hall who has been in a coma for the past 2 months. But Secret Service Special Agent Naomi Templeton, and the US President Victoria Donahue-Cane have other ideas. Other ideas thanks to Evan violating the terms of his secret pardon.

Evan has been called an unsanctioned assassin by many, including Victoria who was installed, not elected. But Evan never once thought about leaking the details of the fabled Orphan Program which Victoria believes has ended, and Evan is the last of his kind. His motto is, it's amazing what you can accomplish if you truly believe that the world doesn't owe you anything. That's especially telling for the new millennials who believe they are entitled to everything free and don't have to work for everything.

So, after being captured, and treated like a terrorist, Evan is given an opportunity. If he ends he life of Luke Devine, who has his finger on some really high ranking and important people, including Senators who are holding up Victoria's agenda, he will be pardoned and can retire in peace. Evan has a code to only kill if the person really deserves such a fate, so he investigates this man and finds a great deal of corruption that requires him to use his fighting skills.

With a little help from 16-year-old Joey Morales, the infamous teen hacker, as well as Tommy Slojack, his armorer, Evan once again has to dig deep into the murders of two innocents. One a boy named Johnny Seabrook, and a girl named Angela Bufford. Thanks to the unrelenting posting of his younger sister, Ruby, Evan must call in a favor from the one person that you never figured would be a great addition to Evan's team: Candy McClure aka Orphan V. Candy is a hoot.

She's funny, she's dangerous, and she may have ended up on the bad side of Evan, but by now, the two are pretty spectacular when the work together. So, Evan, and Candy have to take on Luke's past, as well as the hired guns who are supposed to protect him. Even though Evan has taken on some really bad, bad, people over the course of this series, he still has his 10 commandments thanks to his mentor that he has never forgotten.

He still has a moral compass which he uses to make a choice of whether or not he's going to be intimidated by Jill Biden aka Victoria, or allow Elon Musk, aka Luke Devine, to live and do what he can to stop the President's trillion dollar Bill from being used to pad millionaire's pockets and ensure her probably election to 4 more years of running the country. There is a fourth character who Evan is now adding to his team and that's Aragon, the former smuggler who is going straight. Aragon is a cool character who pretty much helps Evan on a minutes notice.

On a personal issue, I adore Joey and Evan together. He's like the uncle she's been hoping for after a miserable childhood that saw her drummed out of the Orphan program. Add Tommy to the story and you have a bit of levity and comedy as well. Again, Tommy has been around for a very long time, and he's always got some sort of moment that gets to the heart of what's happening to Evan. So, thanks to Joey, and Tommy, and yes, Candy, this situation goes from an S3 (Shit Show Supreme) to something else entirely that leaves you wondering what happens next?

On a side note, Joey has been doing a side project for Evan. That side project is likely to be the reason for the open ending of this story. I look forward to seeing what happens next to this motley crew.

A champion that comes with the ability to wake up Ludminka and free her family.

So, as the story begins, Val, Chinua, Serafima, and Alik now have to focus on the other imprisoned Zladonians trapped by the Czar. With her parents and brothers at long last released from the curse that trapped them in ice for a decade, Valeria should find comfort in their reunion. But everything has changed, including Val herself. Valeria is the Pale God’s chosen champion but what she really wants is revenge on the Czar. Val also knows that she need allies if she is going to be tear down the throne, and rid the country from the cruelness of the Czar.

With the power gifted to her by the Pale God, she will do whatever it takes to liberate her people. Even if that means stealing the Czar's son away from the safety of the Winter Palace. But Val soon discovers that she has abilities and powers that rival the Bright God Zoltay. As Alik watches Valeria struggle to maintain control over the god she holds captive, he begs her to sever the connection. For it is clear the Pale God plans a revenge of his own. Stranger is that Val slowly finds that she not afraid of allowing Bataar get close to her, which puts this on the brink of being a love triangle.

While Val explores the dark side of humanity and gets pushed more and more by Kosci, it is Arik who remains focused on saving Val before she loses herself forever. Will Valeria be able to save her people with the Pale God’s power and save herself too? Or will the power of the Pale God overwhelm her and the centuries long battle between the Bright God and the Pale God continue? I have no disagreements with how the book wraps up. There is plenty of action, and fighting, and it's not like everything happens over the course of a few days.

Russian culture isn’t often explored in teen fantasies, and the author has created a world like no other. Set in a rich, vivid world where a group of people are unjustly persecuted for a magical evil curse bringing despair and poverty to the entire empire, this story features several Slavic elements, including the idea of cosmic duality, polytheism, and a history of brother gods.

Format: Hardcover, 400 pages
Release Date: December 27, 2022
Publisher: Kensington

Genre: Romance / Historical / Regency / Mystery

This captivating Regency-era mystery inspired by the novels of Jane Austen is perfect for fans of Andrea Penrose, Lauren Willig, and Deanna Raybourn, as readers venture beyond the glittering ballrooms and elegant parties of Regency London to the dark side of the city and its unexpected dangers.

Rosalind Thorne may not have a grand fortune of her own, but she possesses virtues almost as prized by the haut ton: discretion, and a web of connections that enable her to discover just about anything about anyone. Known as a “most useful woman,” Rosalind helps society ladies in need—for a modest fee, of course—and her client roster is steadily increasing.

Mrs. Gerald Douglas, née Bethany Hodgeson, presents Rosalind with a particularly delicate predicament. A valuable pearl necklace has gone missing, and Bethany’s husband believes the thief is Nora, Bethany’s disgraced sister. Nora made a scandalous elopement at age sixteen and returned three years later, telling the family that her husband was dead.

But as Rosalind begins her investigations, under cover of helping the daughters of the house prepare for their first London season, she realizes that the family harbors even more secrets than scandals. The intrigue swirling around the Douglases includes fraud, forgery, blackmail, and soon, murder. And it will fall to Rosalind, aided by charming Bow Street officer Adam Harkness, to untangle the shocking truth and discover who is a thief—and who is a killer.

The Secret of the Lost Pearls is the 6th installment in author Darcie Wilde's serious one source is calling Rosalind Thorne Mysteries, while another is calling it the Useful Woman Mystery series. Take your pick. This story is set in the Regency era circa 1920. Timeline wise, it has been a month since King George III died, and the country is in mourning until the new King can be coronated. Series protagonist Rosalind Thorne is a lady of quality in reduced circumstances who makes her living as a “useful woman” – one who helps wealthy women with their personal problems.

Charming and resourceful, she is a woman  adept at helping ladies of the ton navigate the darker corners of Regency England—without revealing Society’s most shocking secrets. This series is catnip for readers who love Regency mysteries by authors such as Andrea Penrose, Alyssa Maxwell, Deanna Raybourne, and Lauren Willig. Also appeals to readers who love Jane Austen, Charlotte Bronte and Conan Doyle, as well as their and the modern sequels, and those who want to explore the historical setting as well as the lives of the characters.

Mrs. Gerald Douglas, née Bethany Hodgeson, presents Rosalind with a particularly delicate predicament. A valuable pearl necklace has gone missing, and Bethany’s husband believes the thief is Nora, Bethany’s disgraced sister. Nora made a scandalous elopement at age sixteen and returned three years later, telling the family that her husband, a Man named Cantrell, was dead. But as Rosalind begins her investigations, under cover of helping the daughters of the house prepare for their first London season, she realizes that the family harbors even more secrets than scandals.

The intrigue swirling around the Douglases includes fraud, forgery, blackmail, and soon, murder. The family is a mess with a father who seems to be occupied elsewhere, a mother who is controlling, three sisters who all have secrets, and a wife who is trying to keep her family from falling apart. Rosalind, aided by charming Bow Street officer Adam Harkness, as well as lady's maid Amelia McGowan, to untangle the shocking truth and discover who is a thief—and who is a killer. At times, this story does have narratives from various characters including Adam who is apparently Rosalind's love interest in this story. Adam hasn't exactly been given levity when it comes to making mistakes that apparently happened in another story.

Rosalind Thorne is an excellent main character with wit, intelligence, and a heart of gold with a feistiness that makes her solve the crime. Societal problems and murder/mystery are included with questionable relations, family, and possible theft. She has her finger on the pulse of the London society, and has made some important contacts and friends along the way. Some of those friends play key roles in determining the outcome of this story. I would say that this is a standalone, but I am not one to recommend going back and trying reading the books in order as they were released.
