STALKING THE OTHERS, by Jess Haines, is the fourth novel in the H&W Investigations series. The story pretty much picks up right where DECEIVED BY THE OTHERS left off. Private Investigator Shiarra Waynest has had it with the Others. Ever since she was dragged into the world of the Others kicking and screaming, her world has turned upside down.
Shia is tired of being pushed around and being used against her will by not only Chaz, but Alec as well. With the possibility that she’s been infected with lycanthrope and with her best friend Sara in enemy hands, revenge against Chaz and Dillon--the person who infected her--grows to a boiling point. Shia seriously wants to put Chaz’s balls in a vice and squeeze them tightly for cheating on her with Kimberly.
As the clock clicks down to the full moon when Shia may or may not shift into a werewolf, Shia attempts to track down Chaz and Dillon with Jack the White Hat’s help. As always, Shia has her trusty belt named Isaac around her waist. Shia turns into a monster hunter and a totally different person with the belt on. But, with the belt becoming more and more blood thirsty in nature each time she wears it, it’s only a matter of time before Shia gives into the bloodlust and loses total control of her humanity.
As if that weren’t enough for Shia to worry about, she has to deal with the enigmatic and deadly Alec Royce, the powerful vampire who she is bound and contracted to. Alec wants her back, and for her to put her attempts at revenge behind her. Alec has her partner and best friend Sara under his protection, something that plays hard on Shia’s mindset as she treads the shark infested waters of Others and her own belts blood thirsty tirades and need for revenge.
Haines really steps up the intensity and romance in STALKING THE OTHERS. Shia is a totally different person when she has her spirit infested belt on. Haines reveals more about the person behind the belt and what happened to him and why he hates the Others so much. She also acknowledges that the belt is doing something else to Shia beyond enhancing her strength, speed, agility and stamina.
Haines does a chapter countdown so readers know exactly how many days are left until Transformation day. This gives the book another creepy yet interesting twist to the story. I don’t think Haines could have got away with NOT putting the countdown up without readers getting annoyed.
In the last part of this book, once Shia has figured things out, she comes head to head with Alec and the fireworks are nothing you’ve seen to this point in the series. If you like hot steamy romance scenes; you are going to love this ending! One can only wait and see what happens next when Haines releases the next book of the series tentatively titled FORSAKEN BY THE OTHERS.
