Review: Unspoken by Sarah Rees Brennan (The Lynburn Legacy #1)

I must say that after reading some of my fellow bloggers reviews and comments, I was a bit hesitant about reading Unspoken. Because of that, I borrowed the book from the local library where regardless if I love or hate the book, I can still return it without losing any money.

I shouldn't have worried since I really enjoyed Unspoken, and absolutely can't wait for Untold to be released later this year. I am actually turning into one of those readers who firmly believes that I need to wait for all three books to be released, and then do one massive readathon so that I don't have to wait so long for the sequels!

"I keep all sorts of things in my bra, actually, Kami told her. "It's always a bit of a shock when I've forgotten my phone is in there and it vibrates."

I really liked the lead character Kami Glass. I thought Brennan blended the perfect amount of sarcasm, with witty comments, and the ability to be funny and serious when necessary. I was surprised at how little her own mother told Kami about why she had the ability to speak to a person who was thought to be non-existent. I appreciated the family aspect otherwise. I liked her two brothers Tomo and Ten as well as her father. It's not often you find a nice family connection that seems to genuinely care about each other in YA Paranormal releases.

"Is this true, Kami? Are you going out on a date?" Dad asked tragically. "Wearing that? Wouldn't you fancy a shapeless cardigan instead? You rock a shapeless cardigan, honey."

I liked her friends Angela and her brother, as well as Holly Prescott and was glad to see how well they all got along without a bunch of teen angst and drama. There's a short story that features both Holly and Angela that Brennan released as a teaser. You should definitely check out her blog for further information.

"Your soul is like the souls of a thousand monkeys on crack, all smushed together." Angela to Kami

I'm not entirely surprised by who turned out to be the villain(s) of this book. In my updates you can tell I was getting warmer as the book progressed. When you look at certain factors closely, you could see it coming from a mile away. The thing I'm most shocked about is the ending and how utterly awful I feel for Kami right now. Sometimes you make the smart decision that ends up being a bad choice. But, isn't that part of life?

As for the so called love triangle between Kami, Ash and Jared, I honestly don't have any emotional baggage in regards to hating it, or loving it. It is what it is. Personally, by the end, I didn't much care for either brother and would definitely push Kami towards Angela's brother who she is definitely more attuned to and familiar with.

Without any reservation or hesitation, I am waiting patiently for Untold to be released on September 24, 2013.

  1. A friend of mine loves this book so I got myself a copy- but I haven't read it yet. I now regret not getting to it sooner though because Kami sounds like a great character and I can't wait to read more.

  2. Great review Shelley! You almost made me like the book more than I did when I read it! And I'm usually a huge SRB fan, I don't really know why it didn't click for me. I'm really happy you loved it, though :)

  3. I was one of the few that seriously disliked this book, but I did like some of the points you made. Kara loved it and has sworn vengeance on me for rating it 2 stars.
