Blurb-

Ciardis Weathervane fought for the living dead and won. But worse than taking on a mass murderer, was her discovery that she had been deceived by her friends. Now she needs to not only fight a war in the North and survive, but also decide where she stands in the midst of competing sides.

A threat to all she holds dear lies in the North and her heart is not the only thing she might lose. A massive army awaits in the mountain pass, surging closer to the gates of the southern lands. Nothing the Algardis army has done so far has dissuaded their march forward and Ciardis finds out that her powers to enhance are needed now more than ever.

As she faces her greatest fears on the battlefields and her heart is torn between her love of Sebastian and loyalty to her family, Ciardis must choose her fate carefully. For in her path, lies the destiny of the empire.

This third novel continues the story of Ciardis Weathervane from Sworn To Transfer.

REVIEW
Sworn to Conflict, (Courtlight # 3), picks up immediately after the events of Sworn to Transfer. Ciardis Weathervane has been transported into the middle of a war zone in the north after touching a strange silver artifact. This came after she helped defeat the Shadowwalker, and learned that she has a twin brother named Caemon who is alive and well and has been kept apart from Ciardis all her life. The intrigue in this series has been ratcheted up a notch by Terah Edun. We actually get a closer look at the war in the north, the secrecy that has been kept by General Barnaren, as well as a whole new threat to Ciardis and the Algardis Kingdom.

Ciardis is much more realistic about things now. She now knows that people have been lying to her and keeping secrets away from her. Some, like Prince Sebastian, claim to have done so to protect her. Others, like Lord Chamberlain, Lady Arabella, and even Lady Serena have decided that to give Ciardis the knowledge she should know, would be detrimental to the Kingdom and put her in further jeopardy from those who want to kill her, or use her to their advantage.

For my part, I truly wished that Ciardis had been allowed to grow up learning more about her abilities, instead of learning on the run as it were. If you've read the first two novels, you know that Ciardis's training is abysmal and truly lacking any scope and depth. Then again, I think that Ciardis's innocence would have been written differently and the shock of what she is just now learning, will hopefully make her a better leader and heroine in future installments.

I said this before, but it bears repeating, that high fantasy novels are a whole lot of fun if the authors does it correctly. Not only do you have a whole new cast of characters including Healer Maris who I adored for her bravery and no nonsense attitude especially towards Ciardis, but you also get a glimpse into a whole new direction for this series. Ciardis and Caemon reunite with someone who has been mentioned but remained hidden until now. Now that the Weathervanes are reunited, they are force to be take seriously and the next installment should be a whole lot of fun to read.

I will be honest here when I say that I don't much care for the relationship between Sebastian and Ciardis. As friends, I have no concern. As lovers, I have a major problem. While they are very powerful together, I can't get over the fact that he truly believes that keeping secrets from Ciardis is a good thing, and for Ciardis to just roll over and take it like. I also believe that Sebastian is loyal to his own cause, and would use Ciardis to get what he wants. Let's hope I am wrong on that front and that Ciardis learns from her own mistakes and grows up quickly before it is too late.

Sworn to Secrecy, Courtlight # 4, is said to be released in 2014.
