*Review* Through the Zombie Glass (White Rabbit Chronicles #2) by Gena Showalter

*My Thoughts*

Alice (Ali) Bell has pretty much lost everything that she's ever cared for. Her parents to a car crash and subsequent zombie attack. Her sister Emma also to the same car crash and now Emma is apparently having some difficulties in staying connected with the mortal plane where she helps Ali by making rabbit clouds in the sky to warn her of the zombies arrival. Previously, Ali discovered the existence of zombies, zombie slayers, and her own abilities. Someone bombed her grandparents home leaving Nana and Ali homeless and relying on the good graces of Mr. Ankh whose own daughter Reese has no clue that there are actual zombies in the world causing major problems and that Ali, Cole, Bronx, Frosty and others are actually Zombie Slayers.

This is not your normal zombie novel folks. These zombies are more spirit in nature than physical. They are smarter, faster, and more determined than ever and they hunger deeply for life's most precious resource; the spirit. If you are bitten by a zombie, you might as well kiss your ass good-bye unless you just happen to carry the zombie antidote with you at all times like the slayers do. The only way to kill these spirit zombies is for your own spirit to leave your body and fight them with weapons and fire.

Ali is the girl who has abilities that no one can explain and they really shouldn't bother since she nearly always comes through in a major way to help the slayers defeat the zombies. She has visions of future events which leads to a conflict with Cole over a new character added to the story, and can turn her body into flames. As we dig deeper into the meaning behind this and by reading her grandfathers journals, and Emma's own determination in searching for answers, we learn that she is more peculiar than anyone could have imagined and it is only getting started.

Most of Through the Zombie Glasses storyline was on focused Ali's insecurities over Cole's ex's MacKenzie, and especially Veronica who just gets under your skin and there's no cure for her irritating itch. I would like to say that all the angst, and nonsense didn't bother me one iota, but then I would be a complete and utter liar. It did bother me; a whole lot. I didn't particularly like Cole's deception and lies when Ali was struggling with her own issues. Showalter even had to write an ending that was from Cole's prospective to explain his actions and what he would do to protect his which apparently includes Ali.

The more interesting aspects of Through the Zombie Glass were Ali's personal struggles with the zombie venom that is flowing in her veins from when she was stabbed in Alice in Zombieland and the fact that Anima refuses to go away quietly which makes Ali a primary target for their evil machinations. At times she hasn't a clue who is in charge, her or her evil zombie twin known as Zombie Alice and that causes problems between the slayers. Throw in the fact that Ali is struggling with her emotions over Cole's presumed betrayal and the arrival of Gavin a new slayer from Atlanta who ultimately is a good guy even though is is a male whore, and you have a twisted tale that Lewis Carroll may have liked.

I will say that my favorite characters in this series are Nana, Kat, and Reeve. I loved how supportive Nana is of Ali no matter how much awful crap has been thrown at them. I loved that she bends over backwards without even being asked and yes, there are times I wanted to slap Ali for ignoring her grandmother to spend more time with Cole. I really hope that Showalter finds a HEA for Kat. If anyone in this entire series is worthy of it, it is Kat. I have a special place in my heart for what she is experiencing. I liked how Kat and Reeve stuck by Ali in her time of need and didn't abandon her despite what their boyfriends may have said.

I am truly worried about The Queen of Zombie Hearts and the synopsis that has been posted. I am worried for what it will mean for my favorite characters, and truly hope that I am wrong in the end and that they survive. Thankfully, we only have to wait until September for the last installment to be released.
