*Synopsis*
Celia Wird shouldn't possess the ability to transform into a tigress. Her three sisters should never be able to burst into flames, heal wounds, or transform common objects into deadly weapons. And yet they do.
Before they were born, the Wird Sisters were cursed by a spell that was intended to destroy them, not endow them with extraordinary powers. The sisters’ magic is untamed and explosive at best, and time is running out for them to take command.
Vampires have targeted Celia’s sweet, tragically human ex-boyfriend Danny. The sisters rush to his aid, but in order to take down the vamps, first they must face their dark past and break a spell that’s screwing up their powers. Except this curse wasn’t meant to be broken . . . and the witch who cast it isn’t done toying with them yet.
*My Thoughts*
As the second prequel in the Weird Sister's series, A Curse Awakened takes readers back to the events that happen right before Celia, Shayna, Emme, and Taran Wird moved from Jersey to Lake Tahoe to start a new life. If you haven't read this series before now, the Wird sisters were cursed by one of their aunts, and things didn't go exactly as she planned. The curse actually gave the sisters incredible abilities that they use to fend off enemies.
Celia, as the oldest, has the ability to shift into a Tigress and as we learn, is also the protector of her family. She also has the ability to travel below the surface, and take people with her. Shayna has the ability to transform wood and metal into weapons. Taran has the ability to create fire, and Emme can heal, and move things with her mind. One of the things Robson does really well not only in this novella, but in the series itself, is to show the love the sisters have for each other and the lengths they go to protect each other.
A Curse Awakened actually does several things; it dives into the curse that the sisters bear and how they were able to face it head on, and it is also their first adventure against the paranormal world (vampires) that they've become totally immersed in. Danny, as one of the main stays in the series, is also Celia's ex, and the one person who has done the most for the sisters over the years. When Danny calls for help, Celia and her sisters answer the call. Danny is perhaps more knowledgeable about the paranormal than anyone else, and thus his ideas about the curse are right on point.
I love the fact that Cecy has created her own unique characters, and gives them some really cool abilities that you don't normally see. A Cursed Awakened is not filled with romance, or twisted triangles like the series itself. Novella's are short for a reason. They are used as an appetizer for the main course, and gives you just enough of a taste to lure you into their stories. Authors use them to tell an adventure that may have been cut out of a previous novel, or a character that may or may not get enough story time in the series itself.
A Cursed Awakened is long enough to understand the curse itself, the challenges the sisters have faced by being different from society, while giving readers a hint of things to come. I'm interested to see how this transition to Loveswept goes about. This series was previously released by Signet, and you can definitely see the changes with this, and A Cursed Bloodline by the covers. As the author has remained the same, I don't see drastic changes happening any time soon.

A CURSE AWAKENED
EXCERPT
(from Chapter One)
There are many reasons a gal can expect a call from an ex-boyfriend―he
misses said gal, still loves her, wants her back, can’t live without her.
I heard: “Celia, you have to help me. Vampires want to eat me and my
dad.”
Welcome to my world.
I held the phone away from me for a second and stared at it like it
was a killer bee about to sting, then returned the antiquated piece of black
plastic to my ear. “Ah, Danny?”
It wasn’t like I didn’t know it was him. Even without my
supernatural hearing, his shaky, terrified voice was as recognizable as his
crazy steel-wool hair my sisters used to gape at. I debated whether to hang up.
We were moving in a few days, leaving Jersey and all its memories behind to
start new lives. Too much bad had happened to us here. It was time for
something good. But I couldn’t bring myself to hang up and disconnect him from
my life. This was Danny. Without his academic help, I’d have flunked out of
nursing school and my sisters would have ended up back in foster care.
“Celia, please help me.”
I grimaced, knowing this would only lead to pain and torture, mainly
mine. “Where are you?”
“In Warren, at my dad’s. But it’s not safe. Can I meet you somewhere
near your place?”
My claws protruded as I tapped the old battered Formica counter. I
withdrew them with a great deal of effort. “How long will it take you to get to
that old soccer field three blocks from me?” I whispered.
“I can meet you there in twenty.” He let out a breath. “Thanks,
Celia.”
I leaned on the doorframe separating the kitchen from our tiny
family room. My younger sisters were rushing around the small space, boxing up
everything we’d planned to donate to charity and oblivious to my conversation.
“Don’t thank me yet. I’m not making any promises.” I returned the phone to the
charger, keeping my sisters in my sights. Agreeing to meet him was my second
mistake; the first was answering the damn phone.
