*Gizmos Book Reviews* A Thousand Pieces of You (Firebird #1) by Claudia Gray

**I received this book for free from Harper Teen via Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.**

*Synopsis*

Marguerite Caine’s physicist parents are known for their radical scientific achievements. Their most astonishing invention: the Firebird, which allows users to jump into parallel universes, some vastly altered from our own. But when Marguerite’s father is murdered, the killer—her parent’s handsome and enigmatic assistant Paul—escapes into another dimension before the law can touch him.

Marguerite can’t let the man who destroyed her family go free, and she races after Paul through different universes, where their lives entangle in increasingly familiar ways. With each encounter she begins to question Paul’s guilt—and her own heart. Soon she discovers the truth behind her father’s death is more sinister than she ever could have imagined.

A Thousand Pieces of You explores a reality where we witness the countless other lives we might lead in an amazingly intricate multiverse, and ask whether, amid infinite possibilities, one love can endure.

*My Thoughts*

A Thousand Pieces of You is the first book in Claudia Gray's new trilogy called Firebird. 18-year old Marguerite Caine, the main protagonist, is the daughter of two scientists who worked on a theory that the universe is multiverse, meaning countless dimensions. By using the Firebird, a person's consciousness can travel to any dimension where that person already exists. If a person doesn't exist in that dimension, well, you can't travel there!

When Marguerite’s father Henry is presumably murdered by his Grad Student Paul Markov, Marguerite is sent on a journey across dimensions searching her father's killer. Marguerite, along with Theo Beck, travels to a futuristic London, 1900 Russia, and an undersea facility called Salacia all to find Paul and bring him to her own brand of justice.

A Thousand Pieces of You is an interesting start for this new series. I'm all about the possibilities of other dimensions. I'm encouraged that we have a protagonist that grows up, as it were, over the course of the story. Marguerite is a bit of an emotional character, but can you truly blame her? I'm still trying to terms with the big reveal and Marguerite's part in all of it, and hope that Gray enlightens us even more in the next installment.

In some ways, this story could be considered a Thriller/Mystery. In others, it's a science fiction romance novel filled with adventure, secrets, betrayal, and a lead character who is more than a little determined to find her fathers killer and ends up being schooled in ways she couldn't have imagined. Get rid of the hint of a triangle between Paul, Theo, and Marguerite, and I'll be riding this trilogy through to the end.

  1. I actually enjoyed this book a lot. I definitely enjoyed the love triangle, when normally I can't stand them. I liked reading your review and seeing a different perspective on the book.
