Catalia "Cat" Fisa is a powerful clairvoyant known as the Kingmaker. This smart-mouthed soothsayer has no interest in her powers and would much rather fly under the radar, far from the clutches of her homicidal mother. But when an ambitious warlord captures her, she may not have a choice…
Griffin is intent on bringing peace to his newly conquered realm in the magic-deprived south. When he discovers Cat is the Kingmaker, he abducts her. But Cat will do everything in her power to avoid her dangerous destiny and battle her captor at every turn. Although up for the battle, Griffin would prefer for Cat to help his people willingly, and he's ready to do whatever it takes to coax her…even if that means falling in love with her.

A Promise of Fire is the first installment in author Amanda Bouchet's Kingmaker Chronicles. Bouchet has created a world where there are three main kingdoms: Fisa, Tarva, & Sinta. For this first book, the story mainly takes place across Sinta where the non-magical Hoi Polloi have overthrown the magical Magoi royals. In this world, you are either born with magic, or you're not. Please meet 23-year old protagonist Catalina "Cat" Fisa. She's what's known as a Soothsayer and goes by the name "Cat the Magnificent". Cat escaped from Fisa where magic is stronger and livelier than it is in the South.

For EIGHT years, Cat has made her home among Selene's Traveling Circus where she has kept her head down, made some very interesting friends, and changed her appearance to make her older than she really is to avoid being caught by those who are eager to get her back home. Cat has a surprising past. If you carefully read between the lines, you will know who she really is, and why so many people like (Andromeda of Fisa) want her back so badly. Cat has had to do some rather extreme things to stay hidden. As a character, Cat is amazing. She's a powerful badass who has a sarcastic and snarky attitude. She can disappear at will. She has even more surprising abilities that will awe you. She is loyal and at times, self sacrificing to a fault.

Meet Griffin. He's a Sintan warrior & Beta who appears on Cat's doorstep looking for someone who can help him and his Alpha Sintan sister Egeria stay in power, and see what's coming for them in the future. Griffin is also immune to magic. Griffin and his trusted men have searched high and low for the person known as the Kingmaker. After they see her with a little boy, they truly believe they have the person they've been seeking. The person who Griffin believes is a treasure he won't ever let go. To say that Griffin and Cat's relationship starts off on the wrong foot, is to say that America has the most honest to God awesome Presidential candidates in modern history! ::dripping with sarcasm:::

Griffin and his men kidnap her, use an enchanted rope so that she can't pull her disappearing act and run away, while also taking a long journey across country where they are forced to fight off all sorts of enemies (including a Dragon!) and those who have tracked Cat down after years of being untraceable. If you love lively banter between characters. Read this book! Cat and Griffin are a couple you will be hearing about from now until the final book in this series is released. I have to say that I loved Griffin's team (Flynn, Kato, Carver). They came to love Cat, and respect her, and even though she had a hardened exterior from years of being afraid of being dragged back to face her own mother who she ran from, they accepted her as part of their team.

Cat also has a humorous meeting with Griffin and Egeria's family. She thinks they are too nice, unlike her own which I can't talk about without spoiling lots of important stuff. Cat also loves Selene who has kept Cat safe and secure for 8 years until Griffin came along. A Promise of Fire is a story that has nearly everything that I love in a book. Action. Adventure. Mythology. A Heroine who can hold her own without a man trying to save her from herself. There is a romance between the two that starts out as antagonists, and then simmers hot and steamy until the final page of the story.

A Promise of Fire is built on some aspects of Greek Mythology. Cat herself has a rather interesting connection to several especially Poseidon & Cerberus & Hades.   Which means that I could change the rating to FIVE GIZMOS and not question myself over the rating. Yes, I am all in for the sequel! I am hoping that Cat can finally unlock her secrets for Griffin.

Book # 2 - Breath of Fire (January 3, 2017)
Book # 3 - Heart of Fire (TBA)
