Worst. Road Trip. Ever.
Escaping with Reid Wentworth should have been fun, but how can I enjoy it when I just (accidentally) killed someone, my mom and brother are in danger, and the Consortium is trying to enslave humanity? (Yeah, they aren’t fooling around.) So feeling something for Reid Wentworth was not part of the plan. Trying to help unite the Resistance against the Consortium means I can’t be distracted by hot boys.
The Resistance secret hideout isn’t exactly the rebel base of my dreams. A traitor there wants me dead, but we have no idea who it is. And with both the Resistance and the Consortium trying to control me, the only one I can trust is Reid. If we’re going to have any chance of protecting my family, controlling my unstable powers, and surviving the clash between the Oculi factions, I’m going to have to catch this traitor. By using myself as bait.

Tonya Kuper's Enigma is the second installment in the authors Schrodinger's Consortium duology. Enigma is a story filled with deception, intrigue, plenty of action, and romance. As the result of protagonist Josie Harper's actions in Anomaly that led to a characters death, there is the distinct feeling that she and her trainer/partner Reid Wentworth are up against something they can't control without help. With the Consortium hot on Josie's tail because she isn't like other Oculi, it is time to meet the Resistance who she has aligned herself with. But, can she really trust them since it is apparent that something is rotten in the organization?

Josie and Reid have had 3 days of peace since the end of Anomaly. 3 days of hiding in hotels while avoiding the Resistance and the Consortium's mole who has their eyes set on Josie. 3 days of Josie coming to terms with her parent's role in the Resistance, while knowing that their serum made her who she is today. She is different from other Anomalies which makes her desirable to become a weapon of choice. But, she is also a human being with human feelings, especially towards her younger brother Eli who is an innocent caught in something he can't understand.

Enigma continues the story about people who are called Oculi. Oculi have abilities that allow them to manipulate and change reality. They also have a bank of limited energy, unlike Josie who seems to have an unlimited supply. For example, Reid can retract a motorcycle, and push a Jeep into existence. Reid is also co-narrator of this story. I like Reid. I like how he tries hard to restrain himself when it comes to Josie and his relationship. While it might be silly, Reid has a reputation to uphold. At the same time, his heart knows that Josie is his rock and his home.

While Josie and Reid are the main characters, there are several others to keep your eyes out for. They include Cohen, Kat, and Zac Brown, who along with Josie and Reid, make up a group of Oculi with powerful abilities. Was curious to meet Reid's long lost father, Harrison Ross, since he was missing for so long. It was fun to run through the action packed conflict between the Consortium and the Resistance. In this world, everyone is guilty until proven innocent. You just don't know who has sold their soul to the Consortium, or who will give their left arm to stand by you.

In closing, I think the story wrapped up perfectly fine. I appreciated that Kuper didn't toss Josie's best friend Hannah away for the sake of Josie's new world. Truth be told, I am disappointed that there won't be a third novel. With the group already mentioned, Josie, Reid, Zac, Kat, and Cohen, there is still a whole lot more they can explore.
