Hocus Pocus and Practical Magic meets the Salem Witch trials in this haunting story about three sisters on a quest for revenge—and how love may be the only thing powerful enough to stop them.
Welcome to the cursed town of Sparrow…Now, for a brief time each summer, the sisters return, stealing the bodies of three weak-hearted girls so that they may seek their revenge, luring boys into the harbor and pulling them under.
Where, two centuries ago, three sisters were sentenced to death for witchery. Stones were tied to their ankles and they were drowned in the deep waters surrounding the town.
Like many locals, seventeen-year-old Penny Talbot has accepted the fate of the town. But this year, on the eve of the sisters’ return, a boy named Bo Carter arrives; unaware of the danger he has just stumbled into.
Mistrust and lies spread quickly through the salty, rain-soaked streets. The townspeople turn against one another. Penny and Bo suspect each other of hiding secrets. And death comes swiftly to those who cannot resist the call of the sisters.
But only Penny sees what others cannot. And she will be forced to choose: save Bo, or save herself.
The Wicked Deep is the debut novel from author Shea Ernshaw. Set in the town of Sparrow, Oregon, The Wicked Deep is a twisted fantasy tale about 3 sisters, Marguerite, Aurora, and Hazel Swan who were accused of practicing witchcraft in 1822. The 3 sisters were drowned in the ocean for their supposed sins against the town. Every year since then, the townies of Sparrow, including protagonist Penny Talbot, know that for several weeks in June, the Swan sisters will rise from their watery grave, take over the bodies of three unsuspecting young women, and exact their revenge on the townies male population.
This year is a bit different for Penny. This year a boy from the outside, Bo Carter, arrives on the eve of the towns Swan Sisters celebration. Bo is looking for answers and his own brand of vengeance. With no job or place to stay, Penny kindly offers him shelter by letting him reside on Lumiere island with her and her mother after he saves her life. Unaware of each other's dark secrets, they both are about to discover that they are the key to each other's happiness and some much-needed closure.
I can't really go any further with this review. Were I to speak about Penny and Bo and their own story withing a story, you will miss an incredible revelation at a pivotal moment that will blow your mind. Never once did I see that revelation coming. The author definitely keeps you guessing as to who the Swan sisters have taken over. Then, she hits you with yet another surprise that leads to such a wild, thrilling ending, that I am still wondering what the heck just happened.
This is also a story that spends a fair amount of time in the past. Readers will get a chance to meet the three sisters and make their own determinations as to whether they were really witches, or just three women who tried to have fun for one brief moment in time and lost their lives to overbearing townies with too much time on their hands. Penny is such an interesting character. You can tell right from the outset that there is something unique going on with her. She's not all that excited about the Swan week activities. She has other more important things like ensuring that her mother doesn't disappear like her father did.
Would I recommend this book? Absolutely. I loved the environment. I liked the darkness of the story. I liked that authors use of flashbacks to the past. I liked Bo, and I didn't think the romance was in your face. I also was curious about Hazel's story and her own romance. Kind of heartbreaking.
