The Matchmaker calls...

...and only the gifted will be selected.

As Mei and the other girls of her village are sent on a harrowing journey across the frozen plains, she wonders what exactly they are selected for. Their guide, a mysterious warrior with a giant fox won't reveal any secrets, but seems to have a protective eye for her.

The new Emperor is said to be dangerous young man, with dark abilities. And, while the others think they're being matched to become his Empress, Mei suspects something more.

Her hopes to honor her family name, and the magical red lantern are all that give her strength as dragons, mystical warriors, and sneaky gods stand in her way to the truth.

That--and the spirits of her ancestors.

Embark on an epic journey to ancient China, where tradition, honor, magic, and intrigue collide in an emotional adventure that will leave readers breathless. Perfect for fans of traditional Asian myths and legends, Mulan, Game of Thrones, and Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon.

The Girl with the Red Lantern is the first installment in author K.N. Lee's Matchmaker War series. This is a story that has (3) main characters. Rohan, Mei, and Dmitri. Rohan was once a powerful sorceress. He is now the Warden, Master of the Earthly realm trying to protect the world from being overrun by Tarth'Ral and his minions which have already taken the spirit realm. Rohan is given the duty of finding the girl with the red lantern since she may hold the key to defeating the darkness that is rising over the land.

18-year old Mei is the only survivor of a massacre that claimed the lives of everyone in her village including her mother and father. Now living with her Aunt, it is decided that the Matchmaker will decide Mei's fate. The Matchmaker, however, has other plans. Mei has the possibility of being a powerful sorceress with unlimited potential if she can find someone to trust to guide her. This makes Mei a target or Tarth'Ral and his General. Mei goes on a quick journey realizing that she survived the massacre because she has powers that protects her. She will need Rohan's help to learn what she needs to help defeat Tarth'Ral.

22-year old Dmitri Timchenko is the Imperial Prince of Russia who is being called home to claim his birthright. Something is coming for him. Something that will lie and deceive and try to covert him into following Tarth'Ral. As Dmitri makes his way home to Russia, Shadow clans are ravaging Russia, China, and Japan. Dmitri soon learns that Tarth'Ral's General is recruiting dead men and creatures from the underworld as well as desperate men around Asia to conquer the known world. Dmitri is apparently on a collision course with Mei.

I think the story would have been better had the author stuck with Mei. Mei's background and her secrets are far more interesting than Rohan. I want to see Mei against the Matchmaker who is apparently the Shadow Lord's finest weapon. It is also apparent that a connection has already been made between Mei and Dmitri. I have had hits and misses with over the years with the author. She writes short stories moving quickly on to something else instead of finishing the series she's currently working on. I would like to see her finish this series so that we can get all three characters together in one place. We shall see.
