Ravenite is the first installment in author Alicia Rades Vengeance and Vampires series. This story takes place in the fictitious town of Nocton, Illinois. Rachel Collins is the infamous Ravenite (Raven of the Night). She's a raven shifter and witch who has had zero training. Rachel is on a mission to find the Soulless who killed her parents, and took her sister Jenna and made her a blood slave. Rachel shifted for the first time that night. Now people talk about the raven shifter vigilante, the Ravenite. Rachel has killed enough vampires to earn a life sentence if the authorities ever catch on to what she's been up to.
Eight years ago, the first vampire Valkas escaped from his supernatural prison, unleashing magic into the world. Ordinary people discovered they had magic. Shifters began shifting, witches began casting spells, Vampires went on a feeding frenzy around the world. Since then, magic has been outlawed except in approved cases. Supernaturals are also required to be registered. Valkas didn't give two figs about how many he turned since there wasn't anyone strong enough to stop him. 2 years ago, the Soulless fell off the radar after forever changing Rachel's life.
Rachel's reputation as the Ravenite has become something of legendary status among the supernatural. But if she is caught by the authorities, she could spend the rest of her life in prison for murder. While pouncing on a vampire who may know the Soulless's location, Rachel runs into Venn Michaels who is a wolf shifter. Venn tells Rachel that the same vampire stole something he needs. Venn introduces Rachel to his family; Ryland (bear shifter), Fiona (human who calls herself a vampire slayer), and Teagan (who just happens to be a witch.)
The family is hunting for the same vamps to retrieve a magical locket created by the first witch that can be exchanged for their friend Sondra. Sondra, a high witch, is being held for ransom by the vampire, Matias Vayne, in return for a valuable locket which can foretell the future. It can allegedly redirect the future. Rachel's priority has and always will be to find her sister, but if she can help Venn and his family out, and discover more about her witch abilities which seem to grow stronger the more she practices, then why not kill two birds with one stone?
I downloaded this story via Kindle for free. The thoughts and opinions are mine and mine alone. If the second book in this series every goes on sale, I think I will try to continue to read the series to see what Rachel and her new friends have to deal with in order to find Jenna and save her.
