After a black witch pitched a hissy fit in Hollis Apothecary, Rue got stuck cleaning up his mess. That was the easy part. Repairing the damage he inflicted on Camber and Arden? That makes Rue wish she could bring him back to life just to kill him again. Slower this time.
While Rue is setting her new life back to rights, Clay and Asa are off working a case, but it soon becomes clear that they’ll need her help to catch the vicious creature preying on locals in a small Tennessee town. She’s got her hands full at home, but Rue has no choice. She must report for duty to honor her agreement with the director. Or else.
What
she discovers leads her deeper down the rabbit hole of Black Hat Bureau
corruption and promises that, no matter how grim the past few weeks
have been, the worst is yet to come.
Black Arts, White Craft is the second installment in author Hailey Edwards Black Hat Bureau series. Rue Hollis of Hollis Apothecary and a consultant to the Black Hat Bureau, which she tried to escape from, is back home in Samford, Alabama picking up the pieces from the aftermath of the previous installment. Camber and Arden are suffering from their experiences at the hands of traitor David Taylor, and it doesn't help things when their uncle Nolan Laurens, an alleged wildlife photographer, shows up claiming to want to help the girls recover.
One of the things the author has driven in to readers is that Rue is something dangerous. She's a black witch who is now trying to walk the path of being a white witch. Rue is the culmination of generations of selective breeding that resulted in power, and intelligence. When a Wendigo starts on a killing spree, Rue must rejoin her team Clay (Golem) and Asa (Daemon/Fae). Of course, Rue renames the Wendigo to Zombigo. It also leads to questions as to why so many people are after the grimoire that Rue found in the previous installment.
The only thing we do know is that it may contain information about Colby who is forever stuck in the form of a butterfly. The gap between mental and physical age continues to grow, and Colby refuses to be left behind resulting in her once again getting involved in Rue's investigation. As I was saying earlier, Rue reveals more about her former life, as well as her parents, and the result of being raised by the director of Black Hat Bureau.
I may be one of the rare reviewers who is sick of the Rue, Asa, and other Asa's shenanigans. I want more action and less other things. I want less of Rue's obsession with Asa's hair and her idea of making shampoo by using his hair as a test subject. Clay may be the only adult in the entire mix and he's tried, and tried to warn Rue and Asa about the road ahead, and the fact that Asa is dangerous. Hell, literally, his own father is as dangerous as they come. I like Rue's relationship with Colby, and it seems as though they are linked together for better or worse. Let's hope it's not worse.
Let's see what happens whether or not I continue this series. It definitely needs to get a whole lot better with more action and less touchy feelie.
