The Supernatural Summit is about to start at the DeVane Hotel in London. Vampires and werewolves, ghouls and gremlins, and pixies and druids have all come together to find better ways to get along with the human community and address the strict laws which govern their existence. It's a real opportunity to change the world for the better and I'm proud to be a part of it.

But there are protestors camped outside the hotel and dangerous rumors circling about one of the delegates. When a dead body is discovered, I know it's only a matter of time before all hell breaks loose.

I have to find the murderer. And I have to find them quickly.

Dark Whispers is the Fifth installment in author Helen Harper's Firebrand series. As a member of the Metropolitan Sup Squad and a supernatural being herself, Detective Constable Emma Bellamy has a lot riding on this bid to create a lasting detente and spirit of cooperation among all supernatural citizens as well as an understanding with humans.

The Summit includes vampires, werewolves, ghouls, gremlins, pixies and druids who have all come together to find better ways to get along with the human community and address the strict laws which govern their existence. It's a real opportunity to change the world for the better. But after being attacked by a fake vampire, and warned about possible consequences of putting all of England's supernaturals in one place by a banished Omega werewolf, and the mysterious Chief, Emma has her hands full.

To max out the stress Emma and her Supe Squad (Liza May, PC Fred Hackert) has to deal with; a hoard of anti-Supernatural protestors, a nosey reporter, as well as the murder of a human, and a pixie that may stir up the embers of hatred between humans and Supernaturals. We can also add her boyfriend, and leader of the vampires and Lord Lukas Horvath who makes things uncomfortable because of his relationship with Emma and the power she holds.

Emma pretty much puts her own career on the line when she advises her supervisors that she should be the face of the investigation. Emma and her team only have a couple of days to find the villain before other police forces are called in to take over the investigation. If that happens, then the peace between the different races that Emma wants so badly is never going to happen. It will also mark the end of Emma's brief career. Except for one brief moment in the story, there was less reliance on Emma's phoenix abilities and the identity of the murderer who shouldn't have been a surprise if Emma actually used her investigative skills.
