THE FIRST NOVEL BASED ON THE HEXED COMIC!

Luci Jenifer Inacio das Neves, Lucifer for short, isn't your typical teenaged girl. She's a thief who survives by stealing bad things from bad people in the magical and mystical underworld hidden beneath our own. So when a policeman's daughter, Gina, is kidnapped by a force he can't explain, Lucifer is the only one who has a chance at getting his daughter back.

With the unsolicited help of Gina's friends, including Gina's boyfriend David, Lucifer's investigation leads to the unfortunate truth of the kidnapping. Gina was taken to an otherworldly dimension by a creature of unspeakable evil: one of the Seven Sisters of Witchdown. Against all odds, Lucifer must use every magical tool hidden in her trick bag to steal her way into the Shade and bring Gina back before the Sister sacrifices her for her own dark ends. But the closer Lucifer gets to Gina, the closer she gets to David. And David to her. Lucifer must risk her life by confronting demons, witches, and the cruel demigoddess controlling her destiny - all to save the one girl who stands in the way of Lucifer finally finding love.

Michael Alan Nelson's "The Sisters of Witchdown" is the first installment in the authors Hexed Novels based on his comic books which there are like 12 issues that appeared from 2008-2009. Meet Luci Jenifer Inacio das Neves, Lucifer for short. She's not your typical teenaged girl. She's a thief who survives by stealing bad things from bad people in the magical and mystical underworld hidden beneath our own. So when a policeman's daughter, Gina, is kidnapped by a force he can't explain, Lucifer is the only one who has a chance at getting his daughter back.

With the unsolicited help of Gina's boyfriend David, Lucifer's investigation leads to the unfortunate truth of the kidnapping. Gina was taken to an otherworldly dimension known as Shade by a creature of unspeakable evil: one of the Seven Sisters of Witchdown who were chased out of Europe by German inquisitors.

What really engaged me was the opening of this book. Gina is abducted following a stop over gone wrong at the local spooky derelict house. This is no normal abduction though, Gina has been literally grabbed and pulled through a mirror by a witch - it doesn't bode well!

The thing I loved was that Lucifer isn't the Mary Sue character who appears to save the day with special powers that suddenly grew out of the aether. Nope. She's had a rough start in life which has resulted in her knowing how to handle herself. Unfortunately, Lucifer once went too far and stole from the wrong person - The Harlot or Keeper of Secrets - not somebody you really want to get on the bad side of. The Harlot in turned Hexed her into being her Heir. On top of that Lucifer is low maintenance only carrying around a bag of necessities and tricks she's discovered along the way.

Outside of Lucifer, there are some interesting characters who she meets along the way. Gina's father Buck is pretty bad ass. He gets a referral to Lucifer to help his daughter, and doesn't just sit back. He's full engage, and yes, protective. The Harlot needs to be sussed about a bit more. In fact, I am curious as to why there's not a sequel yet published so that we can learn more about her. The third character, Val Brisendine, is probably the most interesting. After Lucifer steals a painting from her in order to get assistance from a dangerous witch, she ends up revealing a bit more about Lucifer's past, and why she wants Luce to work for her.

Lucifer is the perfect mash-up of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Lara Croft. I would say try to find the Hexed comics if one wants to continue to find out what happens next to Lucifer and her new allies, but I am hoping that Michael comes around to actually writing a new novel in this series some day soon.
