A new town, new friends, new challenges…. And a new heart-stopping adventure from #1 New York Times bestselling author, Ilona Andrews. Kate, Curran, and Conlan may have left Atlanta for Wilmington, but the usual magic mayhem has also hitched a ride!

Kate and Curran have just settled into their new home and their 'low profile,' when a local businessman approaches them with an offer they can’t refuse. A mysterious evil has spawned in the nearby forest and is holding a defenseless town hostage. The ‘due date’ is rapidly approaching.

It’s exactly the kind of fight the Lennarts can’t resist, not for the prize the town offers, but for the people who will surely die if they ignore it. If they succeed, they’ll be rescuing an entire community and can build a strong new base for their family and the Wilmington Pack. If they fail...well, fail is a four-letter word.

Nothing comes without a price. Now Kate must decide if she has what it takes to pay it.

Magic Claims, by authors Ilona Andrews, is the second installment in the authors Kate Daniels: Wilmington Years series. Kate Daniels and her husband Curran have been playing house for the past 6-7 years trying to hide from who she really is. She left Atlanta for a reason. It was turning messy, the Pack was splintering into too many factions, and too many eyes and powers were waiting to see what she does next. In order to keep her son Conlan safe, the couple moved to Wilmington, North Carolina where they have made their home in a rustic former castle.

However, after Kate's recent heroic exploits, it has brought them into the open and they can no longer hide from their identities or family legacy. With her powerful Aunt Erra, the Rose of the Tigris, pushing Kate to finally accept who she is, and her father Roland teaching her son magic, while also pushing Kate to accept that there's nobody like her in this world, Kate knows that it is only a matter of time before she will have no choice. And, that choice comes from several visitors from Penderton who have a really bad situation that they need immediate help from Kate and Curran.

The visitors tell Kate that monstrous visitors have been demanding human sacrifices, and the new deadline is just days away. To make matters worse, a 5 member squad from the Knights of the Order went in to confront the danger, and only 1 survived. Kate and the Wilmington Pack led by Keelan, are allied in their determination to keep people safe from outside interference. The one thing I loved from Kate is that she finally understands how powerful she really is and maybe what she will need going forward in order to keep people out of her new home.

She has the ability that likely no one else has and therefore she needs territory to defend against all enemies that might come her way. I love the fact that the authors use Curran to tell this story as they did in the first novel. It's nice to see things from Curran's narrative and see how quickly Conlan is coming into his own abilities. The villain in this story is really interesting as are the ice age monsters that are calling the woods home. I think the most curious thing is that there is a brief mention of Julie but I would love to see the authors keep writing more in her journey.

Ok, let's wrap this up by saying that while this story was originally only supposed to be a novella, I am happier than a claim at high tide that the authors once again come back to Kate, and Curran, and maybe, just maybe, we will see another adventure soon, as well as new and old characters from the original series.
