Lorelei Clay wants to play offense for a change. She’s tired of hiding from the past she didn’t even know she had. With a promising relationship and new friends in a small town she loves, Lorelei wants to be free to live life on her terms, without the threat of death or capture hanging over her.
Kane Sullivan hasn’t exactly been hiding from his past—more like he moved without a forwarding address. Unfortunately for him, the boss he tried to overthrow never gave up the search.
And now the former prince of hell has been found.
Kane wants to do whatever it takes to keep his problems from endangering his found family. He knows better than anyone what Lucifer is capable of.
Lorelei is willing to do whatever it takes to protect the demon she loves, but if she can’t convince him to get in the game, they risk losing everything they’ve built together.
When the supreme demon finally makes his move, Lorelei realizes there are some nightmares that even she can’t control.
Annabel Chase's Half Dead is the Eighth installment in the author's Crossroads Queen series. This is the next-to-last installment in this series. The story centers on Lorelei Clay, a complex protagonist with unique powers tied to nightmares and the dead, and Kane Sullivan, a former prince of hell with a past that refuses to stay buried. Before we get to the meat and potatoes of the story, Lorelei takes a trip into enemy territory. That would be The Corporation, which has been hounding Lorelei for months.
The Corporation seems to think that she'll come willingly to work for them, and they think they hold all the cards. Then the unthinkable happens. When a woman named Birdie is found murdered after warning Lorelei of danger, it seems that things are about to get really dangerous in Fairhaven. When Kane’s old boss, Lucifer himself, tracks him down, the couple faces a dire threat to their found family and the life they’ve built. Lorelei’s determination to protect Kane clashes with his resolve to shield others from his problems, creating a tense dynamic that drives the narrative.
The plot thickens with Lucifer’s arrival in Fairhaven, where he offers Lorelei a deal—complete three trials to save Kane from being dragged back to hell. Her relationship with Kane, a slow-burn romance that’s been simmering throughout the series, hits new emotional depths, though some readers might find the pacing of their arc uneven. The supporting cast, from ghostly allies like Ray and Nana Pratt to quirky paranormals like Camryn and Gunther, adds humor and heart, grounding the high-stakes conflict. Fairhaven feels alive, teeming with vampires, demons, and other creatures, all woven seamlessly into the story.
The trials Lorelei faces are gripping, though the final outcome (no spoilers!) left me both stunned and eager for resolution in the next book. It will be interesting to see how the author wraps up this series, and how many of Lorelei's allies survive what's coming for them. Lorelei remains a standout—fierce, sarcastic, and loyal, yet vulnerable as she grapples with nightmares beyond her control.
