In the wake of a woman’s savage murder, the suspects and motives are only mounting for Sheriff Bree Taggert in a twisting novel of suspense by #1 Wall Street Journal bestselling author Melinda Leigh.
In a quiet suburban neighborhood in upstate New York, single mom Kelly Gibson is slain in her home—the victim of a rage killing. Right away, Sheriff Bree Taggert has three persons of interest: an angry soon-to-be ex-husband, a furtive rebound boyfriend, and an obsessive neighbor.
But as Bree and investigator Matt Flynn work together to narrow the field, there’s a shocking twist in the case: a second woman is murdered in the same brutal fashion.
While investigating, Bree is attacked and left for dead. When another woman is kidnapped, Bree and Matt must act quickly to unravel the deceptions in Kelly’s life and death and find a killer before someone else dies.

Beyond Her Reach is the Tenth installment in author Melinda Leigh's Bree Taggart series. Several key characters were involved in the story: Sheriff Bree Taggart, Investigator Matt Flynn, Defense Attorney Morgan Dane, and Private Investigator Lance Kruger. This was a fairly engaging mystery, as the author keeps her cards close to her chest right up until the end of the story. Set in the sleepy yet sinister town of Grey's Hollow, upstate New York, the story kicks off with the brutal murder of single mom Kelly Gibson in her own home—a rage-fueled slaying that screams domestic fallout.
Sheriff Bree Taggert, ever the tenacious investigator, quickly zeroes in on a trio of suspects: Kelly's bitter soon-to-be ex-husband, her sketchy rebound boyfriend, and a nosy, obsessive neighbor. But as Bree and her partner, Matt Flynn, peel back the layers of Kelly's life—marked by financial woes, a contentious divorce, and tentative steps toward a new romance—the case spirals into chaos. Just when it seems like a straightforward whodunit, a second victim emerges, mirroring Kelly's fate and upending the suspect pool.
Enter red herrings, shocking betrayals, and a chilling escalation: Bree herself becomes a target in a brutal attack that leaves her fighting for her life, but is saved thanks to a tenacious dog named Turbo. The stakes skyrocket when another woman is kidnapped, forcing Bree and Matt into a frantic race against time. Leigh weaves in subplots involving hidden family secrets and community deceptions, ensuring the narrative crackles with urgency. Without giving away the jaw-dropping reveals, this plot is a masterclass in misdirection—full of "just when you think you've got it" moments.
No longer just the outsider thrust into sheriff duties after her sister's murder, Bree now navigates the dual pressures of leadership and personal vulnerability with grit and grace. Her partnership with Matt Flynn—both professional and romantic—shines here, evolving from tentative trust to an unbreakable team dynamic that grounds the chaos. Matt's quiet competence and unwavering support make him the perfect foil, while their shared life with adopted kids and rescue dogs adds layers of warmth amid the brutality.
I am not sure that Morgan or Lance needed to be involved this story, but I have a feeling that the author will likely be featuring them in their own story soon. A special nod to the canine contingent—Turbo, the hyper escape-artist pup in training, and the steadfast Greta—whose roles extend beyond comic relief to pivotal, heart-tugging heroism, tying into Bree's own arc of overcoming childhood fears tied to dogs.
Bree's relationship with the town's supervisor takes an unusual turn, and I am not opposed to the two women working closer together, rather than being at odds with each other. Lastly, there is a moment in this story where Bree comes to realize that her memories of the past might have been skewed. Especially after she learns several truths about her mother, who tragically was murdered 30 years ago by her own father, leaving Bree, Adam, and their sister, who is now dead, orphaned.
As I am fully engaged and caught up on this series, it is nice to see that the 11th installment will be released in January, which, shockingly, is only a few months away.
