For a detective and an FBI agent, two seemingly disparate murder investigations collide with a twist in an explosive novel of suspense by a Wall Street Journal bestselling author.

In the crisp mountain air of central Oregon, a teenage girl’s search for discarded cans leads to a horrifying discovery: a body, brutally murdered and abandoned in the woods. The case falls to Deschutes County Detective Noelle Marshall, who finds herself navigating a community steeped in secrets, suspicion, and distrust of outsiders—especially law enforcement.

Miles away, FBI Special Agent Max Rhodes investigates a different kind of darkness—chatter about a violent uprising from a shadowy militia group preparing for war. The two cases seem worlds apart. But as Noelle digs into the murdered man’s past and Max closes in on the source of the terror plot, their paths begin to converge in a terrifying way. This was no random killing. It was a message. A merciless killer and a hidden army are operating in the same shadows, and finding the link between them is the only thing standing between a single murder and a full-blown massacre.

No One Knew is the second installment in author Kendra Elliot's Noelle Marshall series. The story is told via Detective Noelle Marshall, Special Agent Max Rhodes, and Emma Chambers, a young woman who finds a dead body that triggers a series of events that include Special Agent Mercy Kilpatrick and Police Chief Truman Daly to stop a possible terrorist attack around Bend, Oregon. The story opens with a haunting discovery: a lonely teenage girl, scavenging for discarded cans in the woods to scrape together a living, stumbles upon a brutally murdered body.

This chilling find pulls Deschutes County Detective Noelle Marshall into a complex investigation in a tight-knit community riddled with secrets, suspicion, and deep-seated distrust of law enforcement. Meanwhile, FBI Special Agent Max Rhodes (Noelle's romantic interest from the first book) is tracking ominous online chatter about a violent uprising planned by a shadowy militia group gearing up for war. What initially appear to be two unrelated cases slowly converge in shocking ways, revealing that the murder was no random act—it was a deliberate message, and the stakes quickly escalate from a single homicide to the threat of a full-scale massacre.

Noelle Marshall continues to be a standout protagonist: tough, intelligent, and layered with personal history that makes her relatable. Her evolving relationship with Max adds emotional depth without overwhelming the suspense—it's sweet, realistic, and full of chemistry. The teenage witness, Emma, is heartbreakingly well-drawn; her loneliness and resilience steal the show and add a poignant human element to the thriller plot. The book explores timely issues like militia extremism, community distrust of authorities, and the power of unlikely alliances.

Yet it also emphasizes hope, compassion, and people stepping up for one another. I find it interesting that both Noelle and Max have painful past histories. Noelle is still experiencing issues that force her to write everything down, while Max's family is still angry at him for something that happened 12 years ago, which makes him hunted by a villain in this story. This series is not finished. Elliot posted that she intends to continue Noelle's story, and I am all for it. I am looking forward to seeing Max's family issues resolved. I am looking forward to more of Mercy and Truman as well.

When a very personal cold case murder is reopened, a detective’s secrets come to light in a novel of shocking twists and suspense by a Wall Street Journal bestselling author.

Thirteen years ago, Assemblyman Derrick Bell was murdered in his home by an intruder. His wife, Noelle Marshall, was left for dead. The crime was unsolved, but it wasn’t forgotten.

Today the FBI is tackling a fresh perspective on the case and looking to Noelle, now a detective for the Deschutes County sheriff’s office, for new clues. It is reopening everything Noelle thought was behind her. Memories of her escape from a traumatic childhood. A marriage that wasn’t the perfect love story she’d been promised. And a husband whose charm and privilege hid a dark side. But Noelle has been hiding something too: a secret about the night Derrick died that she has never told anyone.

As past and present and leads and misleads collide, one thing is frighteningly clear. Derrick’s murder wasn’t just unsolved. It’s unfinished. And only the truth—no matter the risk—can save the next victim.

Her First Mistake, by Kendra Elliot, is the first installment in the author's Nicole Marshall series. The author states that she will be continuing this series with more books in the future. This novel introduces Detective Noelle Marshall, a character fans may recognize from Elliot’s Columbia River series, now stepping into the spotlight with a deeply personal and emotionally charged story. Set in the familiar Pacific Northwest world of Elliot’s Mercy Kilpatrick novels.

Noelle Marshall is a detective with the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office who is really good at her job. Still, her life is about to be upended when the FBI, in the form of Special Agents Keaton and Max Rhodes, reopens the unsolved murder of her husband, Assemblyman Derrick Bell, which occurred thirteen years prior in Sacramento. Derrick was killed in their home by an intruder, and Noelle was left for dead, suffering a brutal head injury that caused memory loss of the incident and ongoing short-term memory issues.

Now, as the FBI seeks fresh clues, Noelle is forced to confront painful memories of her traumatic childhood, a marriage that was far from the fairy tale she’d hoped for, and a husband whose charisma masked a darker side. Complicating matters, Noelle harbors a secret about the night Derrick died—a secret she’s never shared with anyone. The narrative unfolds across parallel timelines, seamlessly shifting between the present-day investigation and flashbacks to Noelle’s past, including her marriage and the events leading up to the murder.

As the FBI’s scrutiny intensifies and new leads emerge, Noelle grapples with suspicion from investigators, her own fragmented memories, and the fear that Derrick’s killer may still be at large. The stakes escalate as past and present collide, revealing that the murder wasn’t just unsolved—it’s unfinished, and Noelle’s pursuit of the truth could put her in the crosshairs of a dangerous predator. Noelle's in-laws have always placed the blame for their son's death on Noelle.

Even though Noelle has tried to put the past behind her, the past has come calling. Will her husband's murder ever be solved? Will Noelle's memories come back from that night? While the dual timelines of the present and past, spanning 13 years, enrich the story, they can occasionally feel disorienting, particularly in the first half of the book. The constant shifts between past and present, sometimes within the same chapter, may disrupt the flow or the story.

As this is the first installment in a brand new series, the author spends a considerable amount of time establishing Noelle’s early adulthood backstory and how she originally met Derrick (she was a bartender), who barely endured the sad complications of being a politician’s wife. The investigation of Derrick’s murder was taken on thirteen years ago by two FBI agents, Alice Patmore and Oscar Wilson, but it was eventually considered unsolved. We get to familiarize ourselves with Noelle’s uncaring, suspicious in-laws, and her close family (two sisters and a great aunt; her beloved grandfather has passed away in the interim).

As Noelle gets to know at least one of the current FBI agents better (Max), something changes, and her quiet post-marriage life in Oregon is blown up (literally). I think the mystery in this story was well done, even though if you paid attention to certain clues, you will probably get that there's something really off with several characters. What was more shocking was how it was also part of the tragedy, and why everything went down. Sadly, no one saw the signs earlier to help this person who was struggling.

For a search and rescue expert, the buried remains of her past are a dangerous obsession in a twisting novel of suspense by a Wall Street Journal and Amazon Charts bestselling author.

Rowan Wolff was five years old when she, her brother, and their babysitter were kidnapped by a serial killer in the Pacific Northwest. The babysitter was murdered. Rowan was saved. Her brother was killed and buried in the forest, his remains never found. The convicted killer refuses to say where he buried the boy. Twenty-five years later, Rowan is committed to search and rescue with her faithful canine and is obsessed with finding her brother’s grave—and closure.

Detective Evan Bolton thrives on unraveling tough cases, but his latest is disturbing. There’s another serial killer hunting in Deschutes County, Oregon, and the crimes are identical to those committed by the sociopath languishing in prison. Each victim is linked to Rowan. When skeletal remains of several bodies are exhumed in the forest, Rowan’s connection becomes more entwined and impossible to ignore.

Rowan and Evan are determined to solve the case before someone else dies. And someone else will, as the truth about the past is unearthed.

The First Death is the fourth installment of author Kendra Elliot's Columbia River series. This book alternates between Rowan Wolff, a search and rescue expert, and Detective Evan Bolton as they navigate a chilling investigation in Deschutes County, Oregon, where a new serial killer’s crimes eerily mirror those of a convicted sociopath from Rowan’s past. These characters have played parts in the author's Mercy Kilpatrick series.

The story centers on Rowan Wolff, who, at five years old, survived a harrowing kidnapping alongside her brother, Malcolm, and their babysitter in the Pacific Northwest. The babysitter was murdered, Rowan was rescued, but Malcolm was killed, his remains never found. The convicted killer refuses to disclose the location of Malcolm’s body, leaving Rowan with an enduring obsession to find her brother’s grave for closure. Now an adult, Rowan channels her trauma into her work as a search and rescue expert, partnered with her loyal canine, Thor.

When Detective Evan Bolton investigates a series of murders in Deschutes County, he uncovers a disturbing pattern: the crimes are identical to those committed by the serial killer imprisoned for the events of Rowan’s childhood. As skeletal remains are discovered in the forest, Rowan’s past becomes inextricably linked to the present investigation, pulling her and Evan into a dangerous hunt for a new killer. The narrative unfolds with twists, emotional depth, and a subtle romantic thread between Rowan and Evan, culminating in a satisfying, if emotionally intense, resolution.

Rowan Wolff is a standout protagonist—resilient, driven, and haunted by her past. Her dedication to search and rescue, inspired by her childhood mentor, Ken, and her bond with Thor, add layers to her character, making her relatable and inspiring. Evan Bolton complements her as a determined detective with his own complexities, and their evolving relationship feels organic, though it takes a backseat to the thriller elements. Supporting characters, like Rowan’s family and Thor, enhance the emotional stakes, with the family dynamics praised for their warmth and realism.

This book has a third perspective, but I will not spoil it. You will have to read the book and discover who this person is. The dual timeline—Rowan’s childhood trauma juxtaposed with the present-day investigation—creates a layered narrative that keeps readers guessing. The mystery unfolds gradually, with surprises that avoid predictability, and the climax delivers a well-thought-out resolution.

While it features characters from Elliot’s other series (e.g., Mercy Kilpatrick and Truman Daly), prior knowledge isn’t necessary to enjoy the story, though fans of Elliot’s work appreciate the cameos.
