Genre: Fantasy / Romance

Separated from everyone they know and love, sworn warriors (and warring allies) Bellanca and Carver are on a gods-given travel to the famed realm of Atlantis, fight through every danger that awaits them, and find the Shard of Olympus in order to end Atlantis's generations-long magical punishment—all in Zeus's name.

Zeus needs an army if he has any hope of stopping Olympus's bloody coup, and headstrong fire Magoi Bellanca knows it's her duty to deliver one no matter the cost…to herself, to her own growing magic, or to the man she's come to desire with all the flames in her heart.

He left everything behind in order to guard her back as she faces down her destiny, and Carver swears that together, they can overcome any obstacle. But finding the shard is no easy task, and it's not long before Bellanca and Carver are dragged into the center of a deadly game of gods…one not even their combined hearts may be strong enough to survive.

Beneath the Burning Sea is the 5th installment in author Amanda Bouchet's Kingmaker Chronicles series. This series mixes Greek Mythology with Romance. The novel follows sworn warriors and reluctant allies Bellanca and Carver, who are on a divine mission from Zeus to Atlantis to retrieve the Shard of Olympus, a quest that could end Atlantis’s magical curse and bolster Zeus’s forces against a looming Olympian coup and a War between Gods. The couple knows they may never see their friends or family again because a war is brewing on Mount Olympus, and if they fail, the world loses.

Bellanca is a fierce fire Magoi with a fiery spirit to match, and Carver is her steadfast companion, whose loyalty anchors their dynamic. Their journey through Atlantis's perilous, myth-soaked realm is fraught with danger, from battling mythological creatures to navigating a deadly game orchestrated by feuding gods and a maniacal psycho willing to sacrifice women and children for power. Bouchet excels at blending heart-pounding action with witty, banter-filled moments, creating a narrative that feels both explosive and intimate.

The “frenemies-to-lovers” arc between Bellanca and Carver is a highlight, with their chemistry crackling through sharp exchanges and gradual vulnerability. Bellanca’s journey from emotional guardedness to opening her heart is particularly compelling, grounded by her complex backstory and fiery independence, while Carver’s quiet strength makes him an ideal counterpoint. The world of Thalyria continues to shine, with Atlantis serving as a vivid, immersive backdrop.

Bouchet’s integration of Greek mythology feels fresh yet familiar, and the inclusion of bonus material like maps and illustrations enhances the experience. The found-family theme, a staple of the series, adds warmth, making the stakes feel deeply personal. While the plot occasionally leans heavily on familiar fantasy tropes, Bouchet’s skillful character development and emotional depth keep it engaging.

The story itself stands well as a semi-standalone, though familiarity with the series enhances appreciation of its broader arcs. This is especially true when the characters start talking about events and characters who appeared previously in this series, like Cat and Griffin, Jocasta and Flynn, and Prometheus, as well as numerous Gods and goddesses like Hera, Zeus, Athena, Hades, Persephone, Apollo, Hermes, Dionysus, Hephaestus, and Artemis.

One could read this to the end and say to themselves, "Well, it has been a nice long road, but this seems like the right time to say goodbye to these characters." That being said, my only negative commentary is that there is too much steamy romance and insufficient fighting between the Gods/Goddesses.

#Review - A Curse of Queens by Amanda Bouchet #Fantasy #Romance

Series: The Kingmaker Chronicles (#4)
Format: Paperback, 496 pages
Release Date: October 4, 2022
Publisher: Sourcebooks Casablanca

Genre: Fantasy / Romance

The perfect Greek-inspired, page-turning romantic fantasy for fans of Jennifer L. Armentrout and Sarah J. Maas

THE WAR OF GODS IS JUST BEGINNING

After centuries of conflict, the three kingdoms of Thalyria have finally been reunited. But now the queen has been cursed, the royal lineage has been broken, and no one knows who's behind the plot to threaten the once-fractured realm's fragile new peace.

Desperate to help, Jocasta—the king's younger sister and a gifted healer—hatches a daring plan to find Circe's Garden, a fabled island where she hopes to discover an antidote. But she can't do it alone. She needs the strong arm and unflinching bravery of the warrior she's loved since childhood—her brother's right-hand-man and captain of the guard, Flynn of Sinta.

Flynn has spent years fighting to deny the desperate longing burning between them, but he cannot allow Jocasta to face this danger alone. He swears he will be her shield, and together they will do the impossible. Yet with old feelings blazing bright and treachery brewing on Mount Olympus, one thing is clear: Thalyria and its new royals are still pawns in an epic game of power—one that might end in a War of Gods.

A Curse of Queens, by author Amanda Bouchet, is the Fourth installment in the authors The Kingmakers Chronicles. I highly recommend that you read the first trilogy of this series to understand the past events that has finally united Thalyria under the rule of Cat and Griffin and the world the author has created. As we learned from the first trilogy, this world is steeped in Greek Mythology with plenty of Gods and Goddesses appearing through the course of the story. The Kingdom needs Cat and Griffin's promised child or the promises they made will be for nothing.

But someone (no spoilers) has given Cat the Elixir of Eternal Life which means that she will not grow old and neither will her baby Eleni, the child who is supposed to bring change to the world. This book takes place at 4 full moons after the unification of the realm. It features Jocasta, the youngest sister of Griffin, who if you've read Heart of Fire, you know that she was part of Team Alpha along with Flynn of Sintra, her lifelong friend and captain of the guard. The good thing about this book, is that it not only features dual POV's, but they are done in the third person.

When the Gods are non-existent in the struggle to find a cure, especially Persephone, Jocasta strives for a cure herself. Combing through tons of material, and relying on her own healing skills and knowledge of herbs with forgotten knowledge, she is determined to find a path forward. In the end, it means a Quest to find the legendary island of Circe along with Bellanca, Flynn, Carter, and Prometheus. Along the way, Jocasta and Team Elpis must deal with several difficult challenges without losing anyone and themselves to find Circe and the cure for Cat.

They will realize that an Olympianomachy is being fought and Thalyria is the testing grounds for allegiances within the Dodecathlon. While Zeus, who Cat is descended from, has been hard at work crafting this destiny for Thalyria for generations, another Olympian (no spoilers) has decided to step in to foul up his plans. Team Elpis finds themselves pitted against Gorgons, and Pan as well as Circe. While some Gods and Goddesses do appear like Persephone, Poseidon, and Athena, the rest are gone.

Readers were once teased about Jocasta and Flynn's interest in each other, and now we can finally put that to rest thanks to a flashback 6 years ago to a moment that will live in heartbreak for Jocasta and a quest that binds them together forever. As I was wrapping up this story, several things became abundantly clear. The author apparently has chosen to continue this series, and the next book may or may not feature Carter and Bellanca who are light fire and gasoline whenever they are together. I am perfectly fine with this decision.

#Review - Starbreaker by Amanda Bouchet #SyFy #Romance

Series: Nightchaser # 2
Format: Mass Market, 448 pages

Genre: Romance / Science Fiction

THEY NEVER WANTED TO BE HEROES

Captain Tess Bailey and Shade Ganavan are still the galaxy's Most Wanted, and with revolution in the wind and the universe on the brink of catastrophic war, the situation couldn't be more desperate. Despite the Dark Watch scouring the known sectors for them, rebel leaders have handed the crew of the Endeavor a delicate and dangerous mission: break into Starbase 12 and free renowned scientist Reena Ahern. She's the only one who stands a chance of tipping the odds in their favor for the first time in decades.

BUT PULLING OFF THE IMPOSSIBLE IS WHAT THEY DO BEST

The clock is ticking. But as their attraction builds and secrets are revealed, Tess and Shade must decide if they trust each other enough to execute this impossible prison break. They could change the course of history, but they'll be risking everything... They'll just have to tackle one crisis at a time

Starbreaker is the second installment in author Amanda Bouchet's Nightchaser series. This story alternates between two main characters: Quintessa (Tess) Bailey and former bounty hunter Shade Ganavan. Tess is the Captain of the Endeavor. Her crew includes Jaxon Boudreau, Fiona Winterly, Merrick Maddox, and of course, Bonk the cat. The crew of the Endeavor are Nightchasers who bring food, medicine and other much needed supplies to the people who need it the most while trying to avoid the Galactic Overseer who wants Tess's A1 blood for his super soldier army.

Tess is still fuming over the loss of (2) of her crew members who were like family to her Miko & Shiori. But, she has no time to wallow in anger or sadness. Tess has to meet with her uncle Nathaniel Bridgebane, Commander of the Dark Watch, to deliver some of her A1 blood. (There is part of this story that surrounds Nathaniel, but let's just say that If I were to spoil the reason he is important, it would give away a really emotional moment in this story. We'll see if the author decides to make it official or just write it off.)

But, first she's got a side mission to take care of. This mission was given to them by the head of the rebel council, Lorelei Harris. Daniel Ahern wants Tess & Crew to rescue his wife Reena from Starbase-12 who may hold the key to fixing what the Overseer destroyed. And what do you know, just when they think they've about made it out, things go sideways. Tess later learns that Shiori is at Starbase-12 thanks to her uncle's second in command Lt Sanaa Mwande who is a real badass.

Before Tess and Crew can try to break into the prison, they find themselves heavily involved in another dangerous mission which leads to a shocking surprise and the discovery of a massive program the Overseer is about to unleash on all 18 sectors in order to find those like Tess. Shade, now the hunted, is trying to settle into his new place by Tess's side and on the Endeavor all the while making up for his time as a bounty hunter. After betraying her for the large bounty on Tess's head which could have paid off all of his debts, Shade has since changed his ways.

He's trying hard to make up for what he did as a bounty hunter. Sometimes that conflict causes sparks to fly unnecessary in my opinion. But, Shade is an important part of this crew now. Their relationship is more or less in a solid place until a character from Tess's past shows up. Will Gabe be a thorn in Tess's side, or will he be a good boy? I am going to say it now that I DO NOT Trust Gabe. Read the book and you will understand why. I loved Sanaa and Merrick together. The are both super soldiers and they push each others buttons every chance they get. Will they end up together together? One can only hope.
Hate to wait a full year to see what happens next, but I think we all have better things to worry about than when the next book comes out.

#Review - Nightchaser by Amanda Bouchet #Paranormal #SyFy #Romance

Series: Nightchaser # 1
Format: E-Book, 416 pages
Release Date: January 1, 2019
Publisher: Sourcebooks Casablanca
Source: Edelweiss/Publisher
Genre: Romance / Paranormal / Science Fiction

Star Wars meets Robin Hood in USA Today bestseller Amanda Bouchet‘s genre-bending, sci-fi/fantasy romance!

FANTASY/SCI FI ROMANCE

Captain Tess Bailey and her ragtag band of thieves are wanted criminals. They steal from the "haves" to give to the "have nots." Even though her heart is in the right place, her actions still get her into trouble – and there's no trouble greater than the dreaded Galactic Overseer Novalight. He commands the brutal military regime that rules the known galaxies, and Tess is always on his radar.

After stealing a top-secret military laboratory and further inciting Novalight's rage, Tess and her crew manage to escape—and miraculously survive. Docked on their new planet, Tess encounters the tall, dark, and haughty bounty hunter Shade Ganavan, who has to decide if he wants to turn them over to the Galactic Overseer and be set for life, or if the real payoff is winning Tess's heart.

Nightchaser is the first installment in author Amanda Bouchet's newest series either called Nightchaser, or Endeavor depending on whether you trust Goodreads or the publishers web page which says Nightchaser. Captain Tess Bailey and her crew on the Endeavor (Jaxon, Miko, Shiori, and Fiona) are not unlike Robin Hood and his merry men. They rob from those who have, and provide much needed medicines and other supplies to those who desperately need the help or fall even further into despair and hopelessness.

In this universe, the Galactic Overseer has dominance over all the planets and does not feel like sharing the wealth. Tess and her crew are part of the rebel movement shipping mostly food and medicine to those who need it most, including orphaned children. As the story opens, the Endeavor is on the run from the dreaded Dark Watch and a familiar face to Tess, Captain Bridgebane after stealing a lab filled with much needed vaccines. The lab also comes with a stranger who doesn't much speak at all. Until later.....

Taking a rather unorthodox path of doing things, instead of surrendering, Tess chooses to enter what appears to be a dark hole, and ends up in an entirely different sector. Suffering severe damage to her ship, Tess is forced to dock for ship repairs on Albion 5 where she meets Shade Ganavan, the man who is more than he seems. A man who claims he can fix her ship up cheaper than anyone else. A man who has oodles of arrogance, oodles of charm, and oodles of something that makes Tess want to kick him in the....

Unbeknownst to Tess, there is a huge bounty on her head from Captain Bridgebane. One of those bounty hunters just so happens to be Shade, aka Space Rogue. Will Shade turn Tess in for the bounty? Or, will he protect her from other bounty hunters who don't seem to have the same moral standing that he does? A hint of things to come, Tess is more than just a Robin Hood wannabe. She has a long history with several of the so called villains in this story.

There is also more to Shade than meets the eyes, but I won't go into details. He's not all that bad. He has plans. He has goals, and he wants to make up for a huge mistake that cost him nearly everything. Just going to come out and say it. The best part of the book? There's an adorable cat that Tess is given on Albion 5 that makes life better for everyone just by allowing the characters to stroke him. There is also another character named Merrick who readers will meet in the beginning but disappears until the ending when Tess & crew are in deep trouble.

If you've read the author's previous series called Kingmaker Chronicles, you know that she loves, loves, loves writing about sex. In fact, the story is filled with sex, sex, and more sex. I think as I get older, the sex parts of the book become boring. No offense to the author or readers who are into as much sex as they can get. It no longer draws me in, and holds my attention. The author does something a bit different this time out. Readers will get chapters from both Tess and Shade’s points of view.

One of the constants from the author is that her characters, especially the females, are strong, courageous, determined, and capable of doing things without a man around to lift the heavy weight. Nightchaser is a pretty good start to this series, and yes, however much I may hate pages and pages and pages of sex, I will be reading the sequel. There are so many more things to come.

Nightchaser Series:
Nightchaser (Book 1)
Starbreaker (Book 2)
Dawnmaker (Book 3)

Saturday #Review - Heart on Fire by Amanda Bouchet #Paranormal #Romance

Series: The Kingmaker Chronicles # 3
Format: E-Book, 416 pages
Release Date: January 2, 2018
Publisher: Sourcebooks Casablanca
Source: NetGalley
Genre: Romance / Paranormal

Who is Catalia Fisa?

With the help of pivotal figures from her past, Cat begins to understand the root of her exceptional magic, her fated union with Griffin Sinta, and Griffin's role in shaping her destiny.

Only Cat holds the key to unlocking her own power, and that means finally accepting herself, her past, and her future in order to protect her loved ones, confront her murderous mother, and taking a final, terrifying step--reuniting all three realms and taking her place as the Queen of Thalyria.

What doesn't kill her will only make her stronger...we hope.

Heart of Fire is the third and final installment in author Amanda Bouchet's The Kingmaker Chronicles. When we last left protagonist Catalia Fisk, a powerful Magoi of the bloodline of Titans and Olympians, she and her husband Griffin had won the Agon Games, and defeated the Taran Alpha's. Even though Cat has become the Queen of Thalyna and the entity that is supposed to bring hope to the realm, there have been some twists and some losses along the way. Cat, as we have learned, has some interesting abilities, but it might be her own failings and insecurities that lead to failure.

Cat has the ability to steal magic from others, the ability to tell if someone is lying, the ability to use lightning (which is Zeus's trademark), and the ability to go invisible are great tools to have at her disposal. (She also gets one more pretty cool ability in this story but I shalt not spoil it for you.) Cat, who has enough sarcasm and sass to carry the load, grew up amidst fear and darkness, power games and distrust, but has since found a man who loves her fiercely, unconditionally and reverently even though he is beyond overprotective at times, especially now that Cat is carrying "Little Bean."

Her unique relationship with the Gods like Zeus, Poseidon, Hades, Ares and Persephone, have given her the ability to survive situations others would fallen by the way side. But, Cat also has had her destiny guided for her by those same Gods. No matter how hard she tried to escape it, it keeps coming back up in a variety of different forms. She knows that Griffin is the key to her abilities. She also gets a shocking wake-up with some really eye opening revelations from the Gods.

Cat and Griffin have one major challenge remaining; Facing off against Alpha Fisa, Cat's diabolical mother who won't bow down and surrender to anyone, let alone her wayward daughter who ran away 8 years ago. One can expect that Andromeda will do whatever is in her powers to prevent Cat and Griffin from succeeding. Cat is also trying to understand her new destiny. She is Hope in flesh and blood not just some abstract concept. Apparently, Griffin has known about Cat's destiny all along, which is why he went to great lengths to bring her into his family and his plans for uniting the realms under one banner.

Cat literally has the power of Gods at her fingertips, but her insecurities and her worries about hurting or losing those she has become friends and her new family that has accepted her, faults and all have sometimes caused power shortages.
Bouchet never fails to impress at how big she goes with both her world building, her plot, her characters, and her smexy romance scenes. The direct involvement of the Greek pantheon is one of the best moments of the series because it forces both Cat and Griffin to understand what brought them together and what is expected of them.

Central to this entire series has been the so called Power Bid that can reunite the three realms known as Fisa, Tarva, and Sinta into Thalyna. Sinta is where this series began. Fisa will be where it ends. Heart on Fire concludes Cat's journey, her discover of herself and embracing her limitless potential after facing countless trials, physical and emotional. When all is said and done, can Cat and Griffin find their happy ever after? Or, will Andromeda be the thorn that sticks in their claw?

#Wednesday Review - Breath of Fire by Amanda Bouchet #Fantasy #Romance

Series: Kingmaker Chronicles # 2
Format: E-Galley, 448 pages
Release Date: January 3rd 2017
Publisher: Sourcebooks Casablanca
Source: Edelweiss
Genre: Fantasy, Romance

SHE'S DESTINED TO DESTROY THE WORLD...
"Cat" Catalia Fisa has been running from her destiny since she could crawl. But now, her newfound loved ones are caught between the shadow of Cat's tortured past and the threat of her world-shattering future. So what's a girl to do when she knows it's her fate to be the harbinger of doom? Everything in her power.
BUT NOT IF SHE CAN HELP IT
Griffin knows Cat is destined to change the world-for the better. As the realms are descending into all-out war, Cat and Griffin must embrace their fate together. Gods willing, they will emerge side-by-side in the heart of their future kingdom...or not at all.

Breath of Fire, by author Amanda Bouchet, is the second novel in the Kingmaker Chronicles. Breath picks up right where A Promise of Fire left off. Catalia "Cat" Fisa's secret identity has been exposed and that's not necessarily a good thing. Especially for Cat who ran away and hid for years fearing that she will be found out, and dragged back home to face her powerful mother. Having others know her true identity is a shock to the system. With Griffin, Beta Team (Carver, Kato, Flynn) and the rest of Griffin's family now knowing who they have welcomed into their home, Cat has some choices to make.

For a person who never wanted to become Beta Fisa, Cat now has to either accept that it is her destiny to be the harbinger of the end, and destroyer of realms, or do something to change her fate. Cat has some interesting abilities as we learned from the previous installment. Her ability to steal magic from others, the ability to tell if someone is lying, and the ability to go invisible are great tools to have at her disposal. Her unique relationship with the Gods like Zeus, Poseidon, Hades, and some that you've heard about before, give her the ability to survive situations others would fall by the way side.

Cat also has some very interesting revelations about her heritage that came to light over the course of this story. Revelations that will guide the series through the next installment. With the Power Bid at full throttle, Cat, Griffin, & Beta Team travel to the Ice Plains in hopes of gathering some Ipotane's to guard the borders while Cat & Griffin make a play at Tarvan. This leads the group, plus Selena & Jocasta, to participate in what's known as the Agon Games. This part of the story, pitting Cat's team against others, was strangely familiar to another Fantasy story that is now nearing its conclusion.

Breath of Fire is an interesting and enjoyable story once you get past certain aspects of the story. The story started out on the wrong foot for me. I don't care for misguided male characters who beat their chests, throw temper tantrums that end up destroying everything in sight, and then blaming the female lead for running away when he, himself, uttered words that had Cat wondering about what to do next. Cat herself is so careful not to allow all of her barriers to open to Griffin, that they are nearly always at each other's throats.

Then, to make things utterly crazy in my world, the author chooses to go full out sex for several chapters in a row. There is so much sex in this book, that I found myself skipping over entire pages until I got to where the actual action took place. I don't like sex for sex sake. Every time there was a moment of down time, there was sex for sex sake. After reading this book to the final page, I was going to comment on Cat's wild mood swings, and curious reckless behavior that would have killed anyone else. Then the author played THAT card, and I zipped my lips. I am looking forward to the third installment in this series. I am looking forward to seeing how much the author uses certain characters that appeared during the games and whether or not they will be allies, or enemies when all is said and done.

#Wednesday Review - A Promise of Fire by Amanda Bouchet (Fantasy, Romance, Paranormal)

Series: Kingmaker Chronicles # 1
Format: E-Galley, 448 pages
Release Date: August 2, 2016
Publisher: Sourcebooks Casablanca
Source: Publisher
Genre: Fantasy, Romance

Catalia "Cat" Fisa is a powerful clairvoyant known as the Kingmaker. This smart-mouthed soothsayer has no interest in her powers and would much rather fly under the radar, far from the clutches of her homicidal mother. But when an ambitious warlord captures her, she may not have a choice…
Griffin is intent on bringing peace to his newly conquered realm in the magic-deprived south. When he discovers Cat is the Kingmaker, he abducts her. But Cat will do everything in her power to avoid her dangerous destiny and battle her captor at every turn. Although up for the battle, Griffin would prefer for Cat to help his people willingly, and he's ready to do whatever it takes to coax her…even if that means falling in love with her.

A Promise of Fire is the first installment in author Amanda Bouchet's Kingmaker Chronicles. Bouchet has created a world where there are three main kingdoms: Fisa, Tarva, & Sinta. For this first book, the story mainly takes place across Sinta where the non-magical Hoi Polloi have overthrown the magical Magoi royals. In this world, you are either born with magic, or you're not. Please meet 23-year old protagonist Catalina "Cat" Fisa. She's what's known as a Soothsayer and goes by the name "Cat the Magnificent". Cat escaped from Fisa where magic is stronger and livelier than it is in the South.

For EIGHT years, Cat has made her home among Selene's Traveling Circus where she has kept her head down, made some very interesting friends, and changed her appearance to make her older than she really is to avoid being caught by those who are eager to get her back home. Cat has a surprising past. If you carefully read between the lines, you will know who she really is, and why so many people like (Andromeda of Fisa) want her back so badly. Cat has had to do some rather extreme things to stay hidden. As a character, Cat is amazing. She's a powerful badass who has a sarcastic and snarky attitude. She can disappear at will. She has even more surprising abilities that will awe you. She is loyal and at times, self sacrificing to a fault.

Meet Griffin. He's a Sintan warrior & Beta who appears on Cat's doorstep looking for someone who can help him and his Alpha Sintan sister Egeria stay in power, and see what's coming for them in the future. Griffin is also immune to magic. Griffin and his trusted men have searched high and low for the person known as the Kingmaker. After they see her with a little boy, they truly believe they have the person they've been seeking. The person who Griffin believes is a treasure he won't ever let go. To say that Griffin and Cat's relationship starts off on the wrong foot, is to say that America has the most honest to God awesome Presidential candidates in modern history! ::dripping with sarcasm:::

Griffin and his men kidnap her, use an enchanted rope so that she can't pull her disappearing act and run away, while also taking a long journey across country where they are forced to fight off all sorts of enemies (including a Dragon!) and those who have tracked Cat down after years of being untraceable. If you love lively banter between characters. Read this book! Cat and Griffin are a couple you will be hearing about from now until the final book in this series is released. I have to say that I loved Griffin's team (Flynn, Kato, Carver). They came to love Cat, and respect her, and even though she had a hardened exterior from years of being afraid of being dragged back to face her own mother who she ran from, they accepted her as part of their team.

Cat also has a humorous meeting with Griffin and Egeria's family. She thinks they are too nice, unlike her own which I can't talk about without spoiling lots of important stuff. Cat also loves Selene who has kept Cat safe and secure for 8 years until Griffin came along. A Promise of Fire is a story that has nearly everything that I love in a book. Action. Adventure. Mythology. A Heroine who can hold her own without a man trying to save her from herself. There is a romance between the two that starts out as antagonists, and then simmers hot and steamy until the final page of the story.

A Promise of Fire is built on some aspects of Greek Mythology. Cat herself has a rather interesting connection to several especially Poseidon & Cerberus & Hades.   Which means that I could change the rating to FIVE GIZMOS and not question myself over the rating. Yes, I am all in for the sequel! I am hoping that Cat can finally unlock her secrets for Griffin.

Book # 2 - Breath of Fire (January 3, 2017)
Book # 3 - Heart of Fire (TBA)
