Sixteen-year-old con artist Jo Chastain is about to take on the biggest heist of her life: impersonating a missing girl. Life on the streets of Boston these past few years hasn’t been easy, and Jo is hoping to cash in on a little safety, a little security. She finds her opportunity in the Lovecrafts, a wealthy family with ties to the unsolved disappearance of Vivienne Weir, who vanished when she was nine.

When Jo takes on Vivi's identity and stages the girl’s miraculous return, the Lovecrafts welcome her back with open arms. They give her everything she could want: love, money, and proximity to their intoxicating and unpredictable daughter, Temple. But nothing is as it seems in the Lovecraft household—and some secrets refuse to stay buried. As hidden crimes come to the surface, and lines of deception begin to blur, Jo must choose to either hold onto an illusion of safety, or escape the danger around her before it’s too late.

Kim Savage's In Her Skin follows in the footsteps of After the Woods and Beautiful Broken Girls. Protagonist Jolene Chastain is about to take on the biggest con job of her life. Jo learned everything she knows about being a con from her own mother. But, after her mother was murdered by the Last One, as she calls him, she high tails it out of Florida and lands in Boston. Homeless, living on the streets with her prostitute boyfriend Wolf, Jo decides to take on the identity of a girl named Vivienne Weir who disappeared when she was 9 years old.

Everyone is a mark in Jo's world. From the Police Social Worker, to the Boston Detective who was part of the original investigation into Vivienne's disappearance, to Henry and Clarissa Lovecraft who are given custody to the girl who now calls herself Vivienne. But, there is one person the con may not work on. That person is 16-year old Temple Lovecraft who knew Vivienne when they were children and may know what really happened to Vivi. Jo attempts to live by several important rules. "Stay in character, even when no one is looking & never forget what you claim."

But, given the opportunity to finally have a family, a home of her own, and perhaps a future that doesn't lead to her dying at an early age on the streets, Jo plays the part of Vivienne as though she was born to it. The problem is that the Lovecraft's, especially Temple, are way more than they put forward to the public. Temple has a very dark side that I won't spoil. But, needless to say, you must pay attention to the nuisances and hints that the author leaves behind for you, the reader.

As a reader, you start to ask important questions: What really happened to Vivienne Weir while her parents were next door? Does the Lovecraft family have anything to do with her disappearance? Did Jo walk into a situation that will end up getting her disappeared? Or, will Temple discover the truth behind Jo and turn the con upside down? This is also an odd way to tell the story. It appears as though Jo is telling the story to Temple, and not the actual reader. Bizarre and twisted I have to admit. This is a story that is a bit on the unsettling side, with enough foreshadowing to keep you reading until the twisted ending that still has me muttering to myself.

"A Death blow is a Life blow to Some
Who till they died, did not alive become
Who had they lived, had died but when
They died, Vitality begun." Emily Dickinson

Remember the places you touched me.
Mira and Francesca Cillo were beautiful, overprotected by their father, and, frankly, odd. To the neighborhood boys they seemed untouchable. But one boy, Ben, touched seven parts of Mira: her palm, hair, chest, cheek, lips, throat, and heart. After the sisters drown themselves in the quarry lake, a post-mortem letter from Mira arrives in Ben's mailbox. The letter sends Ben on a quest to find notes in the places where they touched. Note by note, Ben discovers the mystical secret at the heart of Mira and Francesca's strange world, and he discovers that some things are better left untouched.

"Whey you touch things, they can break."

Beautiful Broken Girls, by author Kim Savage, is  her follow up novel After the Woods. The story surrounds two sisters (Mira & Francesca Cillo) who commit suicide, and a next door neighbor (Benvenuto Lattanzi), who manages to find a way into one of the girls hearts before the girls choose to end their lives instead of facing their demons.

Ben receives a letter (8) days after the girls are found dead:

"Everyone wanted to touch us, including you. So, remember the (7) places you touched me. That's where you'll find the truth. Start at the beginning."  Mira sends Ben on a hunt for clues to what really happened to her, and Francesca with each clue representing the (7) body parts that Mira allowed Ben to touch. Palm. Hair. Chest. Cheek. Lips. Throat. Heart. The author actually breaks the story up into (7) parts as well with each part representing a body part.

Ben is the boy next door who had something really horrible happen to him. So horrible, in fact, that people really believed that he's messed up, and therefore his decisions and actions are always being watched to ensure he doesn't flake out. Ben is curious as to why Mira sent him a letter. After all, Mira basically closed herself off from him prior to her death. As Ben slowly uncovers Mira's clues, he gets a broader idea what really caused the sisters to choose the path they did. Who can Ben really trust? His parents? The so called expert in Mr. Falso? Or, was what happened to the sister's so awful that nobody would ever believe him?

Mira & Francesca are the daughters of one of the more important people in town. Their father protects them not unlike princesses being forced to stay locked up in the castle without attention any parties, or dating, or meeting any would be suitors. It doesn't hurt that both girls are quite pretty, or that nobody dares mess with the girls for fear of ending up on the wrong end of facing the girls father in court, or worse. Francesca has some issues which won't be discussed ever. Mira is the solid sister who tries to guide her sister, and Connie, the cousin, is always on hand to do what the sisters do no matter what.

Let me say right off the bat that I was 100 percent wrong in my guess at what was happening to the girls, and why they chose such a hard core way to end their lives. I won't even bother giving away clues. I will say that miscommunication plays a huge role in the story, and perhaps the outcome of what happens as well. Suicide novels are hard for me as both an Italian and a Catholic. I don't agree with it, but I am not one of those who will rise up and start preaching about those who do commit suicide ending up with the Devil. Nope. This story flips back and forth between the now, and the then. There are so man things that just drove me nuts, including the miscommunication party that wasn't caused by either Ben, or Mira. Ben isn't as interesting as Mira nor Francesca. But, in the end, he's what the cards have dealt us.

#Saturday Review - After The Woods by Kim Savage (Young Adult, Thriller)

Would you risk your life to save your best friend?

Julia did. When a paroled predator attacked Liv in the woods, Julia fought back and got caught. Liv ran, leaving Julia in the woods for a terrifying 48 hours that she remembers only in flashbacks. One year later, Liv seems bent on self-destruction, starving herself, doing drugs, and hooking up with a violent new boyfriend. A dead girl turns up in those same woods, and Julia’s memories resurface alongside clues unearthed by an ambitious reporter that link the girl to Julia’s abductor. As the devastating truth becomes clear, Julia realizes that after the woods was just the beginning.

After The Woods is the debut novel for author Kim Savage. The story is a young adult psychological thriller that focuses on 16-year old Julia Spunk, and her best friend Olivia Lapin. Nearly a year ago, the best friends were doing a bit of cross country training in the woods, when Olivia was attacked by a strange man. Julia attacked the man allowing Olivia to escape and call the police.

Two days later, Julia wandered out of the woods worse for wear, while her captor, Donald Jessup, ended up killing himself in police custody. Over the past year, through writing in her notebooks, Julia has tried to piece together what really happened that day by using her intuition and demand for answers. Things just don't add up. Enter the manipulative reporter Paula Papademetriou who  would sell her first born to get the scoop on what happened to Julia and Olivia.

Aspects of her capture and Olivia's strange behavior since then just don't add up, especially the bad boy she suddenly finds herself in love with. Sometimes it takes a trigger, like the body of another victim to trigger the minds closed doors. Sometimes, doing what's right, saving your best friend from being attacked, isn't necessary what's best in the long term. Sometimes the truth is hidden in plan sight.

Thanks to being very inquisitive about her experiences, Julia becomes her own investigative reporter. Secrets are uncovered via flashbacks and events that have happened since that day. Then you start to question everything you remembered about your captive, your captivity, and your best friend's actions since that fateful day.

After The Woods is a story that will definitely keep you on your toes. This is a story that deals with Julia's coping mechanism, while also exploring how much you truly trust your best friend. Liv's character is one that is totally opposite of Julia. While Julia was brave, a bit on the sarcastic side, and loyal to a fault to her friend, Liv's personality took a turn towards the dark side. Whenever someone says it is a matter of nature, vs nurture, you can point directly to Liv's character for reference.

While there isn't any solid romantic aspects to the story, there is the hint of being one between Julia and a boy named Kellan, whose father lead the charge for Julia's return and to uncover what happened to her. I think that Kellan, given the chance, is a good fit for Julia even with all her baggage and her inability to let things rest until the truth finally comes out.

I dare say that the ending through me into a bit of a tizzy. I knew the second half of the book would fill the gaps in Julia's memory while closing out her desire for answers. While I knew that something was hinky about Olivia, the ending definitely grated my nerves and made me feel even more for Julia than I did at the start. If you are looking a case of nature vs nurture, look no further than Olivia and her relationship with her parents.
