The #1 New York Times bestselling authors Preston & Child return with a thrilling tale in which archaeologist Nora Kelly and FBI Agent Corrie Swanson, while investigating bizarre deaths in the desert, awaken an ancient evil more terrifying than anything they’ve faced before.

In the New Mexico badlands, the skeleton of a woman is found—and the case is assigned to FBI Agent Corrie Swanson. The victim walked into the desert, shedding clothes as she went, and died in agony of heatstroke and thirst. Two rare artifacts are found clutched in her bony hands—lightning stones used by the ancient Chaco people to summon the gods.

Is it suicide or… sacrifice?

Agent Swanson brings in archaeologist Nora Kelly to investigate. When a second body is found—exactly like the other—the two realize the case runs deeper than they imagined. As Corrie and Nora pursue their investigation into remote canyons, haunted ruins, and long-lost rituals, they find themselves confronting a dark power that, disturbed from its long slumber, threatens to exact an unspeakable price.

Badlands is the 5th installment in author Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child's Nora Kelly series, featuring archaeologist Nora Kelly and FBI Agent Corrie Swanson. FBI Agent Corrie Swanson is assigned the investigation into the skeleton of a woman found in the New Mexico badlands by a movie crew. The woman apparently walked into the desert, removed all her clothes while walking, and died of heatstroke and thirst. By the bones, an arrowhead and two round, green stones called lightning stones are found.

When Corrie calls Nora to look at the arrowhead, Nora immediately takes more interest in the stones, which she identifies as scarce green lightning stones. The body is later identified as Molly Vine, who went missing five years earlier.  When another body is found and identified as Mandy Driver, a geological consultant, two green lightning stones are again found by her. Their investigation leads Corrie and Nora to believe that the two deaths might be connected to Professor Oskarbi who had ties to both deceased women at the University of New Mexico.

He also had an interest in the Gallinas, indigenous people who used lightning stones and were wiped out in the 13th century by the Chaco Canyon people. How does this all connect together? As Corrie and Nora pursue the investigation into remote canyons, haunted ruins, and long-lost rituals, they find themselves confronting a dark power that, disturbed from its long slumber, threatens to exact an unspeakable price. In the meantime, Nora's younger brother, Skip, gets into a situation where he needs Nora to save him from his idiocy.

The investigation follows some complicated turns along the way, and several different story lines are going on as everything heads to a run-in with the supernatural. Nora and Corrie complement each other, and having Nora’s brother, & Corrie’s very close friend, Sheriff Watts, in the story adds some depth to the story. Corrie, first introduced in Still Life with Crows (2003), has evolved from a troubled, rebellious teenager into a capable yet still-developing FBI agent who finally gets her chance to prove herself to her supervisors.

I appreciate that the co-authors incorporated actual historical context into this story. I once visited New Mexico to visit a friend and interview for a job. I can honestly say the State has a unique and long history of Indian tribes that didn't like each other, and used brutality and genocide to wipe out entire tribes of men, women, and children. Going back to the 12th century, a tribe known as the Galina people lived in New Mexico. They were said to have been wiped out by another tribe called Chaco, which existed in the same time frame. Were they wiped out because they practiced dark magic and believed in Skinwalkers, or was it something else entirely?

#1 New York Times bestselling authors Preston & Child return in the latest installment of the bestselling series featuring renowned archaeologist Nora Kelly and FBI Agent Corrie Swanson, who investigate a mystery so enigmatic it may have no solution.

In 2008, nine mountaineers failed to return from a winter backpacking trip in the New Mexico mountains. At their final campsite, searchers found a bizarre scene: something had appeared at the door of their tent so terrifying that it impelled them to slash their way out and flee barefoot to certain death in a blizzard. Despite a diligent search, only six bodies were found, two violently crushed and inexplicably missing their eyes. The case, given the code name “Dead Mountain” by the FBI, was never solved.

Now, two more bodies from the lost expedition are unexpectedly discovered in a cave, one a grisly suicide. Young FBI Agent Corrie Swanson teams up with archaeologist Nora Kelly to investigate what really happened on that fateful trip fifteen years ago—and to find the ninth victim. But their search awakens a long-slumbering evil, which pursues Corrie and Nora with a vengeance, determined to prevent the final missing corpse from ever coming to light.

Dead Mountain, by co-authors Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child, is the fourth installment in the Nora Kelly series. Key characters: FBI Agent Corinne "Corrie" Swanson has spent the past 4 months attending various boards of inquiries, debriefings, and lie detector tests after her last adventure. Nora Kelly, Chief of Archaeology at Santa Fe Archaeological Institute, along with her brother Skip Kelly who is in charge of collections. Supervisory Special Agent Clay Sharp who becomes Cori's mentor but allows her to take lead in a shocking case that goes back 15 years.

In 2008, nine experienced mountaineers failed to return from a winter backpacking trip in the New Mexico mountains. At their final campsite, searchers found a bizarre scene: something had appeared at the door of their tent so terrifying that it impelled them to slash their way out and flee barefoot to certain death in a blizzard. That has led to a lot of conspiracy theories involving yetis, avalanches, aliens, government coverups, etc. Despite a diligent search, only six bodies were found, three remain missing. The case, given the code name “Dead Mountain” by the FBI, was never solved.

15 years later, two drunk frat boys seeking shelter in a prehistoric cave, damage prehistoric artifacts and discover two very old bodies. Because this falls on federal lands, Cori and Sharp take lead on the case. Thanks to Cori's relationship with Nora, the two end up taking point on uncovering the bodies, as well as notifying the proper Indian authorities because of the prehistoric Indian ruins. The curious thing about the discovery of these bodies is that they are located a stones throw from Kirtland Air Force base where the largest storage facility for nuclear weapons exists.

The other curiosity is that one body remains missing and finding the body is like searching for a needle in a haystack. Corrie believes the answer lies with finding the ninth backpacker who may hold the answers they need to solve the mystery including the journal and camera said to have been used. No easy task. It has been 15 years, and there are those who appear to be blocking her investigation for fear of national secrets being exposed. While Cori and Nora are working together, things get bad for Nora and her brother thanks to an overzealous Sheriff named Hawley who ends up arresting Nora's brother Skip for assault and battery and other trumped up charges.

So, while Cori is investigating other angles to the Dead Mountain mystery, Nora has to find a lawyer to help Skip, and hope that he doesn't end up going away for 15 years. Later, Corrie, without Sharp around for guidance, is determined to learn the truth about what happened on Dead Mountain on Halloween 2008 and bring closure for the families of the nine backpackers. Even if it means taking Nora away from helping her brother stay out of prison. Even if it means exposing national security secrets in the process.

*Thoughts* The premise of the story is closely related to Douglas Preston's "Dyatlov Pass" article, which was called one of the most popular articles The New Yorker published in the year of its release 2021. The story is based on the strange fate of 9 cross country skiers in the Ural Mountains who died in 1959 under bizarre circumstances of a remote masif called Height 1079. The strange fate has generated endless speculation. For decades, conspiracy theories entwined around this incident until 2021, when scientific findings brought the probable solution to the events.

Because of the Russia invasion of Ukraine, the authors decided to change the setting to New Mexico's Manzano Mountains near Kirtland Air Force Base. In the late 1940s a facility began to be constructed inside the mountains on the eastern boundary of Sandia Base that became known as Manzano Base, or Site Able, one of six such sites located around the US built to stockpile the nation’s nuclear weapons arsenal. After the Russians exploded a bomb called Tsar Bomba, the most dangerous nuclear weapon ever created, the Government shuttered the bunker which was supposed to protect the US President.

#Review - Diablo Mesa by Douglas Preston, Lincoln Child #Thriller #Suspense #Mystery

Series: Nora Kelly # 3
Format: Hardcover, 400 pages
Release Date: February 15, 2022

Genre: Thrillers / Suspense

Lucas Tappan, a wealthy and eccentric billionaire and founder of Icarus Space Systems, approaches the Santa Fe Archaeological Institute with an outlandish proposal—to finance a careful, scientific excavation of the Roswell Incident site, where a UFO is alleged to have crashed in 1947. A skeptical Nora Kelly, to her great annoyance, is tasked with the job.

Nora's excavation immediately uncovers two murder victims buried at the site, faces and hands obliterated with acid to erase their identities. Special Agent Corrie Swanson is assigned to the case. As Nora’s excavation proceeds, uncovering things both bizarre and seemingly inexplicable, Corrie’s homicide investigation throws open a Pandora's box of espionage and violence, uncovering bloody traces of a powerful force that will stop at nothing to protect its secrets—and that threatens to engulf them all in an unimaginable fate.

Diablo Mesa is the Third installment in author(s) Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child's Nora Kelly series. The third installment in the Nora Kelly series reimagines the Manhattan Project as a clandestine arms race with even more intrigue than previously thought, concealing a tantalizing mystery. Nora faces a crisis of conscience when her nemesis, Dr. Marcelle Weingru, President of the Santa Fe Archaeological Institute, suggest that Nora take part in a UFO dig financed by billionaire Lucas Tappan of Icarus Space System.

You could legitimately call Lucas Tappan Elon Musk/Richard Branson because of everything that he's involved in. After being passed over for a much deserved promotion for her work over the past two novels, and putting her life on the line in uncovering dangerous secrets, Nora, in a moment of clarity, dares Weingru to fire her. She's had enough of being disrespected. She has zero desire of ruining her career on a wild goose chase. After being offered a first hand look at the Roswell site where an alleged UFO crashed in 1947 by Tappan, she's not really sure if it is something she wants on her resume.

After learning that her brother Skip has taken the job working with Artifact Curator Noam Bitem, Nora, as the primary archaeologist, accepts the assignment and is put in charge of the dig. The dig site is at a remote spot called Diablo Mesa, the spot where an alien spaceship is believed by some to have crashed - an event the government has tried to cover up ever since. When a pair of not so well-buried bodies turns up early on and it seems great pains have been taken to hide their identities, Nora gets suspicious. To maintain integrity of the site itself, Nora calls in her friend and FBI Special Agent Corrie Swanson, who is also a forensic anthropologist.

With a little push of encouragement from her supervisor, Special Agent Hale Morwood, Corrie's investigation uncovers a different facet of the areas intriguing history. Through a nasty turn of events, her mentor who was looking at giving Corrie more cases of her own, ends up murdered in a brutal way. Soon thereafter, she ends up assigned a new FBI mentor who may be more of a threat, than a supporter. Upon closer investigation, the reader will learn that there's a covert group that has been secretly kept intact since the first Roswell incident and it reaches deep into the NSA, FBI, CIA, and DIA.

When the dig resumes, it's fraught with mystery and danger. Nora unearths more clues that lead to more questions than answers and that puts her on a deadly path to previously said secret group. Neither Nora nor Corrie are about to quit or back down, at least until things start to happen that could force the issue and possibly even bring their careers to a permanent end. Nora and Corrie will face a Government cover-up, a secret rogue agency, spies, as well as history as they've never knew it before.

Over the course of the first two installments, Nora and Corrie's friend/mentor Pendergast showed up at the end of the story to prove his superiority. This time, it is all on Corrie and Nora to get themselves out of trouble with a little help from a Sheriff who Corrie may be romantically interested in. This story is reality based conjecture and speculation as to what really happened in 1947. Even though some secrets have finally been released due to FOA requests, and declassification of documents, it is or was either a secretive weather balloon that was testing for Soviet nuclear weapons, or it was an alien spaceship that crashed and skipped to another location.

#Review - The Scorpion's Tail by Douglas Preston, Lincoln Child #Thrillers #Suspense

Series: Nora Kelly # 2
Format: Hardcover, 416 pages
Release Date: January 12, 2021
Publisher: Grand Central Publishing

Genre: Thrillers / Suspense

From #1 bestselling authors Preston & Child comes a thrilling novel following archaeologist Nora Kelly and FBI Agent Corrie Swanson as they work together to solve a twisted crime that reaches far beyond any of their worst fears.

Following the acclaimed debut of Old Bones, this second "happily anticipated" new thriller in Preston & Child's series features Nora Kelly, archaeologist at the Santa Fe Archeological Institute, and rookie FBI Agent Corrie Swanson, as they team up to solve a mystery that quickly escalates into nightmare (Booklist).

A mummified corpse, over half a century old, is found in the cellar of an abandoned building in a remote New Mexico ghost town. Corrie is assigned what seems to her a throwaway case: to ID the body and determine cause of death. She brings archaeologist Nora Kelly to excavate the body and lend her expertise to the investigation, and together they uncover something unexpected and shocking: the deceased apparently died in agony, in a fetal position, skin coming off in sheets, with a rictus of horror frozen on his face.

Hidden on the corpse lies a 16th century Spanish gold cross of immense value.

When they at last identify the body -- and the bizarre cause of death -- Corrie and Nora open a door into a terrifying, secret world of ancient treasure and modern obsession: a world centered on arguably the most defining, frightening, and transformative moment in American history.

The Scorpion's Tail, by co-authors Douglas Preston, and Lincoln Child, is the second installment their Nora Kelly series. Dr. Nora Kelly is senior curator at the Santa Fe Archaeological Institute who first appeared in the authors Thunderhead and is an associate of FBI Special Agent Aloysius Pendergast. The series also features FBI Agent Corrie Swanson of the Albuquerque Field Office. She's the protegee of Special Agent Pendergast who saw something in her that her own parents didn't. Corrie and Nora first worked together in the story Old Bones which revisited the Donner family tragedy.

Corrie has been out of the FBI academy for 8 months and is spending the next two years on probation while working out of New Mexico field office. She had quite the experience after Nora lead an expedition into the Sierra Nevada to find the Donner Party's "Lost Camp" and found herself deep in trouble. You could say that Nora owes Corrie her life. While responding to a violent domestic dispute with other agents, Corrie makes a mistake and even though she saves a child, she blames herself for not doing enough.

Two weeks later, she is assigned by Supervisory Agent Hale Morwood to an unfolding case up near the Azul Mountains. A local sheriff encountered an illegal relic hunter uncovering a dead man's body. One of the reasons that this is the perfect case for Corrie is that she has a background in forensic anthropology from John Jay College of Criminal Justice. Corrie requests Nora's assistance in determining how hold the body might be. Corrie needs all the help she can get because people see how young she is and tend to ignore her.

Nora is an ace when it comes to ancient Pueblo culture. Said mummified body appears to have been buried since around 1945. What’s even more shocking is that an old golden cross is found with the body likely dating back to the 17th century when Spain and Native Indians warred with each other over the land. This suddenly becomes a mystery, and a treasure hunt of sorts. There's talk of a hidden treasure high up in the mountains surrounding the White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico. But then things get a bit strange. Someone doesn't want Corrie or Nora anywhere near the ghost town of High Lonesome.

They'll face the rigors of the dangerous terrain where Geronimo and the Apaches once roamed which is now home to Los Alamos and the White Sands Testing Range. They will face historic details about the release of nuclear weapons on the desert and the desire among those in the know and others to find a long-hidden cache of gold and other gems. There's a lot going on in this story, but it is fast paced and engrossing. The historical aspects of the story, especially the nuclear tests in the New Mexico desert, once again proves that the authors actually took their time and did some research before laying pen to paper.

As a historical buff, I found myself checking on the authors work to see how accurate they are. Surprisingly, very. We yet again get an Agent Pendergast sighting to save the day. Not sure why he’s needed except to embarrass Corrie or to prove he’s just better than anyone else.

#Review - Old Bones by Douglas Preston, Lincoln Child #Thrillers / #Suspense

Series: Nora Kelly #1
Format: Hardcover, 384 pages
Release Date: August 20, 2019
Publisher: Grand Central Publishing

Genre: Thrillers / Suspense

#1 bestselling authors Preston & Child bring the true story of the ill-fated Donner Party to new life in a thrilling blend of archaeology, history, murder, and suspense.

Nora Kelly, a young curator at the Santa Fe Institute of Archaeology, is approached by historian Clive Benton with a once-in-a-lifetime proposal: to lead a team in search of the so-called "Lost Camp" of the tragic Donner Party. This was a group of pioneers who earned a terrible place in American history when they became snow-bound in the California mountains in 1847, their fate unknown until the first skeletonized survivors stumbled out of the wilderness, raving about starvation, murder-and cannibalism.

Benton tells Kelly he has stumbled upon an amazing find: the long-sought diary of one of the victims, which has an enigmatic description of the Lost Camp. Nora agrees to lead an expedition to locate and excavate it-to reveal its long-buried secrets.

Once in the mountains, however, they learn that discovering the camp is only the first step in a mounting journey of fear. For as they uncover old bones, they expose the real truth of what happened, one that is far more shocking and bizarre than mere cannibalism. And when those ancient horrors lead to present-day violence on a grand scale, rookie FBI agent Corrie Swanson is assigned the case...only to find that her first investigation might very well be her last

Old Bones marks the launch of a brand-new series from Preston & Child that will draw on the author's backgrounds in archaeology, American history, and Museum Studies like never before. While Old Bones will be the first official book of the Nora Kelly series, the first novel to actually feature Kelly as the main protagonist was 1999's Thunderhead. Dr. Nora Kelly is an archaeologist associate of Special Agent Aloysius Pendergast. Her last appearance came in the novel called Cemetery Dance. Cemetery Dance was the ninth book in the Agent Pendergast series.

Most recently a curator in the Anthropology Department of the New York Museum of Natural History, Nora now works for the Santa Fe Archaeological Institute. Nora is approached by Dr. Clive Benton, a California historian from Stanford University who has a proposition for Nora and her employer.  Clive wishes for the institute to become involved in the search for The Lost Camp. The Lost Camp is part of Clive's determination to find one of the Donner Party's last known locations.

To make things even more interesting for Nora's boss Dr. Jill Fugit, Clive claims that according to Tamsen Donner's journal, one of the men on the Donner expedition, Jacob Wolfinger, had been carrying quite the fortune in Liberty Head gold eagle coins which has never been found. The deal is done and the die is cast. For Nora, the lost money is a nice reward, but being the first to find the Lost Camp, can make her already impressive career a huge boost.

Corrine "Corrie" Swanson is also an an associate of Special Agent Pendergast. She's a graduate of  John Jay College of Criminal Justice and is now a new agent of the FBI. Corrie first appeared in Still Life with Crows and was the featured protagonist in the Pendergast novel White Fire. While working for her new boss, Corrine uncovers a curious mystery in that those with the same name have either had their graves robbed, or have been kidnapped. But, what do they have in common? What are the perps searching for? Can Corrie put the pieces together before she has to hand off her case to someone more experienced?

While Nora and her team are uncovering history, as well as dealing with murder, Corrie is trying to prove herself to small minded sheriff's who believe she is too young to be leading any investigation. She also has to deal with a supervisor who allows her just enough room to hang herself before believing that she is better off dealing with other less important cases. Corrie and Nora aren't much of friends in this book. Not until they are both sort of pushed into realizing this Lost Camp search was much more than either of them could have imagined.

Overall, the story was just fine, but the ending was really off the rails. Obviously, the co-authors had to have a Pendergast sighting since this series is a spin-off from his own. As always with the Preston & Child’s books, there is a lot of history to be gleaned and history to be researched more fully. The Donner Party horror has been in the minds of historians and history lovers since 1847. There is an unresolved issue that I am hoping gets more explanation in the sequel. It would explain who the real villains are that are off screen causing so much pain and suffering.
