Serpent & Dove meets A Curse So Dark and Lonely in this vividly arresting addition to the The Beast Charmer series!

Leena Edenfrell never dreamed of igniting a war, and her pair bond, Noc Feyreigner, never wanted to set foot on a battlefield again. But when their enemies combine forces, they have no choice but to fight. While Noc makes moves to reclaim his throne, Leena acts as the new Crown of the Charmer's Council, searching for a way to stop the enemy from raising an ancient dragon destined to burn their world to ash.

But no matter how hard Noc and Leena fight, the odds are stacked against them, and soon a winged shadow reigns over Lendria. It's then they learn the true price of victory: in order to tame the terrifying beast, Leena will have to sacrifice her own heart...and perhaps lose herself in the process.

The Shattered Crown is the third and final installment in author Maxym Martineau's The Beast Charmer trilogy. Fated mates Leena Edenfrell, now the Crown of the Council for the Best Charmers, and Noc, aka Aleksander Nocsis Feyreigner, Prince of Lendria, and heir to the thrown, must somehow pull together their people in a desperate fight against Varek, the King of Lendria, Yazmin, former Council member and traitor who tried to kill her own people and wants to raise a dangerous beast called Ocnolog, and Darrien, Cruor assassin who took people loyal to him to ally with Varek and Yazmin.

It has been one week since Yazmin's attack where she ordered beasts to kill Charmers. Meanwhile, Darrien tried to kidnap Leena, and take Noc's job as leader of the Cruor assassins. In Hireath, Yazmin is searching for the missing Charmers who she believes were secreted away in some location she is desperate to uncover. It has been discovered that the Royal family's sentinels have been hunting and capturing Charmers on Beast Hunts. Leena never dreamed of igniting a war, and Noc never wanted to set foot on a battlefield again or to become King.

But with their enemies combine forces, they have no choice but to fight and seek outside help in order to bring the villains down and save the world. While Noc makes moves to reclaim his throne, Leena acts as the new Crown of the Charmer's Council, searching for a way to stop the enemy from raising Ocnolog, an ancient dragon destined to burn their world to ash. Leena and Noc know that the enemy will be difficult to defeat, so they travel to another kingdom where the Queen of that country despises Noc for something that happened a very long time ago when he was cursed by a dark practitioner.

Leena, with a little help from Princess Jayla and her newest gift of a beast, convinces her mother that helping Leena and Noc rebalance the world would also save their own lives from countries already encroaching on their territory. After all, there is a prophecy that needs to be stopped. One of the key aspects of this series and Yazmin's betrayal is that she truly believed that Varek was kidnapping and keeping Charmers for his own nefarious reasons. If Yazmin discovers that this is factual, will it really change anything? Especially since the only thing she needs now to raise Ocnolog is already at her finger tips.

Yazmin is truly evil in this book, and Leena has her hands full trying to stop her destruction. But when Leena discovers a shocking secret, will she stay the course, or will she join Yazmin? While the story does alternate between Leena and Noc, Yazmin has a few chapters thrown in for a broader view of what is happening in this world. There were certain chapters which we saw from the perspectives of Calem, Ozias, Kost, and Gaige who have really become Leena's family since she first met the assassins of Cruor and they allow them into their lives. They each have their own struggles and relationships to deal with and each of their singular chapters provided us enough information to know there is more for them to say of their story.

I feel that the author did a decent job of wrapping up this series and tying up loose ends, including the actual fate of what really happened to Leena's parents who disappeared on a beast hunt. In all seriousness, there are several secondary characters who could legitimately have their own novella's or spin off series including Raven, Oz, and Calem.

Fantastic Beasts meets Assassin’s Creed in this epic, gripping fantasy from Maxym M. Martineau

Noc Feyreigner, leader of the assassins of Cruor, is living on borrowed time. If he fails to kill Leena Edenfrell—the girl he can't live without—his own life will be at stake. With the dark magic of Curor's Oath testing his control, Noc has to fight with everything he is to keep his friends and family safe.

Leena would do anything to help Noc overcome the oath. So when she hears of a beast rumored to have the power needed to save Noc's life, she embarks on a quest to the frozen north. But what starts as a hunt for a magical beast quickly turns Leena, Noc, and their trusted band of assassins into prey…and time is running out.

The Frozen Prince is the second installment in author Maxym Martineau's The Beast Charmer trilogy. The first thing you should know is that this series was originally released as an adult fantasy romance. It has been reworked and re-released as a teen fantasy, retaining the same title, plot, and characters, while also aging them down and removing the explicit sexual content. This story revolves around a group of 5 individuals; Noc Feyreigner, Calem, Kost, Ozias, and of course, Leena Edenfrell who survived a contract that was put out on her life by an unknown person for reasons that haven't been fully explained yet.

Leena is what's known as a charmer. A Charmer is a person who possesses the rare ability to summon magical beasts which is why the series is being compared to the book Fantastic Beasts. Charmers are only as strong as the beasts they keep, and Leena is one of the strongest around. The story actually opens with the introduction of Prince Aleksander aka The Frozen Prince who we know as Noc. Noc is the leader of the assassins of Cruor which had something of a slimming down when a group decided to follow someone else.

The Cruor are undead. They have been raised by Cruor Masters who are able to restore the dead to life.  They are not easily defeated or swayed. When an assassin takes a job, they are highly successful at completing their mission. Noc has found himself in quite a quandary after accepting a contract that is magically enforced to kill Leena. Although he's broken the curse that haunted him for 50 years, if he fails to kill Leena—the girl he can't live without—his own life will be at stake. With the dark magic of Curor's Oath testing his control, Noc has to fight with everything he is to keep his friends and family safe.

Leena would do anything to help Noc overcome the oath including trusting people who end up betraying her. Leena, who has been pardoned for her past crimes, gets a visit from fellow beast Charmer Gaige who offers to help if he gains access to the famous Cruor library. When she hears of a beast rumored to have the power needed to save Noc's life, she embarks on a quest to the frozen north to collect key parts of the equation. But what starts as a hunt for a magical beast, quickly turns Leena, Noc, Kost & Ozias into prey. It seems as though neither Leena nor Noc have escaped their destinies just yet.

Trouble in the form of former assassins, traitorous beast charmers, and King Varek's Sentinels who have a capture and kill order on Lenna and Noc. With time is running out before Noc has to kill Leena, the group also has to figure out how to train Calem who has a tendency to shift into beast mode whenever he gets angry after he died and was brought back to life. On top of everything else, Noc seems to be keeping secrets from Leena, ones that pertain to his past and tie into the present. Secrets that all come out later in the story with a twisted cliffhanger ending.

Some questions & answers for those who read The Beast Charmer have been posted by the author:

Is The Beast Charmer different from the young adult (trade paperback) version?
Yes and no. The plot and characters are the same, though the cast has been aged up to align with an adult audience. This edition focuses more on the romance between Noc and Leena, and as such, there is some explicit content and it’s geared toward an adult romance readership.

Does this mean we won’t get the remainder of the Beast Charmer series in the adult version?
At this time, Leena and Noc’s story will be told in its entirety in the young adult version. Stay tuned for potential additional materials geared toward the adult, romance-reader audience.

Series: The Beast Charmer # 1

Release Date: June 25, 2019

Assassin's Creed meets Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them in this gripping, epic fantasy romance trilogy from debut author Maxym M. Martineau.

My heart wasn't part of the deal when I bargained for my life,
But assassins so rarely keep their word.

Exiled Charmer Leena Edenfrell is running out of time. Empty pockets forced her to sell her beloved magical beasts-an offense punishable by death-and now there's a price on her head. With the realm's most talented murderer-for-hire nipping at her heels, Leena makes Noc an offer he can't refuse: powerful mythical creatures in exchange for her life.

Plagued by a curse that kills everyone he loves, Noc agrees to Leena's terms in hopes of finding a cure. Never mind that the dark magic binding the assassin's oath will eventually force him to choose between Leena's continued survival...and his own.

Kingdom of Exiles is the first installment in author Maxym Martineau's The Beast Charmer trilogy. This story revolves around two main characters: Leena Edenfrell and Noc, a Cruor Assassin who is hired to kill her. Leena is what's known as a charmer. A Charmer is a person who possesses the rare ability to summon magical beasts which is why the series is being compared to the book Fantastic Beasts. Charmers are only as strong as the beasts they keep, and Leena is one of the strongest around. Leena, who was sentenced to a lifelong exile from her former home, makes a living any way she can.

Which often means selling her beasts which is supposed to be forbidden. It's hard for Leena to sell the beasts since she has a connection to each of them and knows exactly what they offer her each time the are called. In fact, she carries a book around her neck with each beast she has in her bestiary. After meeting and defeating a Cruor assassin, Leena makes a deal that will not only save her life, but out the person who was responsible for marking her for death. She must provide four magical creatures to the Guild Master and 3 of his men in order to stay alive.

Noc is the Guild Master of the Assassin's group known as Cruor. The Cruor are undead. They raise those they can't live without which often times means loved ones or life long friends. They are not easily defeated or swayed. When an assassin takes a job, they are very successful at completing their mission. Until Leena defeats one of Noc's men and he is forced to take on Leena's bounty. The real point here is that there is magic attached to each bounty and the assassin who takes it. If the assassin fails, they forfeit their life. So, now Noc has to find a way to have Leena provide him and 3 of his men with 4 magical beasts while also uncovering the person who initiated the bounty.

Leena is a pretty decent character with a bit of bravado and vulnerability mixed in. Noc is charismatic, secretive, and brilliant. He knows how to box people in, and get the most out of them.  I really got to enjoy the secondary characters who join with Noc and Leena on their mission to collect 4 beasts. Kost is the assassin who failed to kill her, Ozias takes a keen interest in Leena right from the start and sticks by her side throughout, Calem is the flirty, wild assassin who looks for a challenge any where he can find it.

It took a bit to get into this book, but I will say that it is worth your time to take a chance with the book. The romance was pretty predictable but at least it wasn't love at first glance. I know it's a paranormal romance, therefore there will be romance involved in the story. Yep, that's for sure! I would have loved to learn more about Noc and who he really is. He is holding a key piece of the equation to who he was before he raised from the dead and became an assassin. Hopefully we will find out more when the second book comes out next year.
