This riveting sequel to Echoes and Empires sees Joss and Jericho team up with some of their greatest enemies to bring an end to the queen’s empire of lies, from New York Times bestselling author Morgan Rhodes. Perfect for fans of Realm Breaker and The Queen's Assassin.

But Valery, Jericho’s boss—and a notoriously powerful mage—has other plans.

Amid high tensions, Joss sets out to learn to control the memory magic—along with her own natural powers. As the struggle between Lord Banyon and the Queen threatens the people Joss cares about, she stumbles onto hints of a monumental royal secret. Her unwanted power just might hold the answers she needs to solve all her problems—but she’ll have to work quickly, because the fate of an empire hangs in the balance.

Legends and Liars is the second installment in author Morgan Rhodes Echoes and Empires duology. After being infected by a dangerous piece of magic—one that allows her to step into the memories of an infamously evil warlock—Lord Zarek Banyon the most infamous warlock in the history of the Empire—17-year old Josslyn Drake has found herself in the middle of a major conspiracy that may bring down Regorian Empire and the reign of Queen Isadora.

Joss, Prince Elian, Viktor (Queensgard and Jericho's brother), and Jericho Nox are hiding from the Queen after escaping the palace. Prince Elian wants to be cured of his beastly curse, Viktor wants to help his brother Jericho, and Joss wants to learn more about magic in the kingdom, and all of them want to be free. Joss had hoped to finally find a way to solve both of their magical problems in one fell swoop, with the help of criminal-turned-ally Jericho Nox, the Blackheart.

But Valery, Jericho’s boss—and a notoriously powerful mage who carries a knife that can pull the truth out of anyone—has other plans. It soon becomes clear that Valery can’t, or won’t, provide assistance. In fact, Valery seems all too happy to watch Joss and her allies struggle to survive. And as Joss’s relationship with Jericho becomes more confusing than ever, she realizes that she’ll have to find her own way out of this magical mess, with or without help from those around her.

Because if what Joss knows gets out, it might destroy the Empire in one fell swoop and anyone who stands in the way, might get burnt or left behind.

Thoughts: It is fair to say that when this story began, I had no thoughts of Josslyn making this far in life without being killed or thrown in a far off prison never to be heard from again. She started out as the First Daughter of the Empire, only to see her surrogate father murdered, and being forced to carry the memories of a man who she believe killed her father. Joss's growth in this book takes some time, but once she understands the powerful secrets that she has access to, she steps up and delivers a well earned pat on the back.

The witch moved through the crowded restaurant, drawing the eye of everyone she passed. She had long, dark brown hair, pale white skin, and lips as scarlet red as the dress that hugged her slim body. Diamonds sparkled at her ears, throat, and wrists. She could easily pass for the young wife of a politician or businessman, meeting her friends for dinner. Most would view her as beautiful, elegant, fashionable, and entirely harmless.

They’d be dead wrong.

She didn’t look to the left or right. Her attention was fixed on only one person.

Me.

I didn’t try to smile. I didn’t wave my hand in greeting. Instead, I focused on hiding my fear, since it wasn’t the least bit helpful tonight.

My gaze shifted from the witch to the tall young man who accompanied her. Black eyes. Dark hair. Broad shoulders. A tense, square jaw. The tattoo of a dagger on the side of his neck, visible above the collar of his black leather coat. Contrary to the witch’s benign appearance, most casual onlookers would immediately assume Jericho Nox was dangerous, and instinctively want to run in the opposite direction. For me, however, the relief at seeing the Blackheart stole the air right out of my lungs.

Shortly after we’d arrived in Cresidia, a city six hundred miles north of Ironport, Jericho had disappeared without a word. And then five long days had passed in utter silence. I’d convinced myself that his evil boss had punished him for failing his latest mission. Or worse . . . killed him. But then, earlier today,I received a message to meet him and the witch here tonight. Alone.
Jericho scanned the restaurant vigilantly, his expressionimpenetrable steel. The table I’d been taken to upon my arrivalwas in a private alcove set slightly apart from the rest of the restaurant, through a carved stone archway. Just beyond the archway, the restaurant bustled with waiters and, most importantly, a dining room full of patrons. There was no way I’d ever meet with this witch without knowing there were a hundred witnesses present.

She took a seat across from me, and I tensed. I’d be perfectly happy if tomorrow this witch was executed for her long list of heinous crimes. I’d make sure I had a front-row seat. Tonight, however, her death would do me no good at all. Elian needed her help. And, in more ways than I cared to admit, so did I.

“Jericho, please make the introductions.” Her voice took me by surprise—it was as sweet and smooth as honey. I guess I’d expected her to sound as shrill and cruel as her reputation.
The Blackheart took the seat next to his boss. I tried to read his expression, but it gave me no clues as to where he’d been for five long days.

“Valery,” he said evenly, and his familiar deep voice betrayed not even a whisper of emotion, “this is Josslyn Drake. Josslyn Drake, this is Valery.”

He’d called me simply Drake so many times that my first name sounded strange on his lips. Not strange in a bad way. Just strange.

Valery gestured for a waiter to approach. He had a bottle of red wine already in hand, and he poured two glasses from it without being asked—one for me and one for her.

“I took the liberty of ordering this for us,” she said.

“How thoughtful of you,” I replied dryly. “No wine for Jericho?”

“I prefer that my employees don’t drink alcohol.”

“It’s fine,” Jericho said. “I’m not thirsty.”

I wished that we’d had time to talk before this, to help me get my bearings when it came to meeting his boss. What she knew, what she wanted, what she planned to do next.

“Have you visited Cresidia before, Josslyn?” Valery asked when the waiter moved away from the table.

Small talk didn’t seem to suit the occasion, but I’d do my best to endure it.

“No,” I replied. “I’ve rarely traveled far from Ironport all my life. At least, not until recently.”

Ironport was in South Regara, and Cresidia was in North Regara. While Ironport was straightlaced, business minded, and highly respectable with its gray-and-silver skyscrapers, and meticulously groomed green spaces, Cresidia was known more as a vacation destination—with luxury shopping, glittering hotels, and sandy beaches. I’d spent most of my time since our arrival on one of those beaches, staring out at the sparkling blue sea, piecing together everything I’d seen and learned over the last month that had shattered the life I’d always known into a million jagged pieces.

“The life of a prime minister’s daughter,” Valery mused. “How very limiting that must have been for you.”

I fought to hold on to my calm expression. “Actually, my life felt quite limitless. Until last year, of course.”

She nodded, her expression serene. “Yes, of course. My deepest condolences on your father’s death.”

My fingers itched to grab the steak knife in front of me and shove it through her eyeball, straight into her evil brain.

“I’m trying very hard to be polite to you,” I said tightly. “Really, I am. But I’m sure you must understand why that’s going to be a challenge for me.”

She studied me for a moment, a glass of wine poised in her perfectly manicured hand. “Jericho tells me that you know everything.”

“I know enough,” I bit out. Then I chose to ignore her and focus on the Blackheart for a moment while I gathered my poise and control again. “Where have you been for the last five days?” I asked him bluntly.

Jericho blinked, his jaw tense. “There was something I needed to take care of.”

“What?”

His black eyes flicked to mine, a silent warning in their depths. “Something.”

“I needed Jericho to retrieve this for me,” Valery said as she reached into her handbag to pull out an object, which she placed on the table. It was a small golden box covered in geometric etchings.

My breath caught at the sight of it, and my confused gaze shot to Jericho.

“You may explain,” Valery said to him with a casual wave of her hand.

Something tight in his expression eased just a little as the Blackheart nodded. “Val wanted me to pay a quick visit to Tobin to get the memory box back. She’d heard through the grapevine that he was planning on selling it. He’d already put feelers out to see how much it was worth on the black market. I got there just in time to retrieve it.”

“I thought you said it didn’t matter,” I said, my throat painfully tight. “That the memory magic could be contained inside any object.”

“I was wrong,” he replied.

I glared at him. “You were wrong?”

He shrugged. “It happens occasionally. Apparently, the symbols on the box are specific to this piece of contained magic in particular. Live and learn.”

I realized then that the black leather coat Jericho currently wore was the same one that Tobin, a Queensguard who secretly worked for Valery—aka a traitor to the Empire—had forcibly taken from him. The box had been in his pocket at the time.

“Nice coat,” I said.

“It sure is,” he agreed. “Glad to have it back.”

I wasn’t sure I wanted to ask my next question, but I really wanted to know the answer. “And is Tobin . . . still alive?”

Jericho didn’t speak for a moment. “I’m sure he’s still alive in the hearts of the people who loved him. If those people actually exist, which I highly doubt. But generally speaking? No. Tobin is very dead.”

I didn’t have to ask how Tobin died. I could guess. By Valery’s command. It was how she dealt with difficulties. She’d wanted the memory box stolen from the Queen’s Gala by any means necessary. And now she had it, only three weeks past the original deadline. Missing its valuable and vitally important contents, of course. But she had it.

The witch watched me carefully for my reaction to all of this. Perhaps she expected me to be appalled or squeamish or frightened at the suggestion that Jericho had killed someone on her orders. She would be disappointed.

Tobin had shot Jericho in the chest and then shoved both of us into a walled prison without sparing a moment of concern for either of our fates. And I wouldn’t spare a moment of concern for his.

So, now I had my answer about where Jericho had been for five days. Time to deal with the present and what it meant for my future.

“What did you tell her?” I asked Jericho.

He met my gaze directly, his expression now unreadable apart from a nearly imperceptible tightness along his jawline.

#Review - Echoes and Empires by Morgan Rhodes #YA #Fantasy

Series: Echoes and Empires # 1
Format: Hardcover, 400 pages
Release Date: January 4, 2022
Publisher: Razorbill
Source: Library
Genre: Young Adult / Fantasy

From the New York Times bestselling author of the Falling Kingdoms series comes the first book in a brand-new duology about forbidden magic and dangerous secrets, for readers of Victoria Aveyard and Margaret Rogerson.

Josslyn Drake knows only three things about magic: it’s rare, illegal, and always deadly.

So when she’s caught up in a robbery gone wrong at the Queen’s Gala and infected by a dangerous piece of magic—one that allows her to step into the memories of an infamously evil warlock—she finds herself living her worst nightmare. Joss needs the magic removed before it corrupts her soul and kills her. But in Ironport, the cost of doing magic is death, and seeking help might mean scheduling her own execution. There’s nobody she can trust.

Nobody, that is, except wanted criminal Jericho Nox, who offers her a deal: his help extracting the magic in exchange for the magic itself. And though she’s not thrilled to be working with a thief, especially one as infuriating (and infuriatingly handsome) as Jericho, Joss is desperate enough to accept.

But Jericho is nothing like Joss expects. The closer she grows to Jericho and the more she sees of the world outside her pampered life in the city, the more Joss begins to question the beliefs she’s always taken for granted—beliefs about right and wrong, about power and magic, and even about herself.

In an empire built on lies, the truth may be her greatest weapon.

Echoes and Empires is the first installment in author Morgan Rhodes' Echoes and Empires duology. Morgan has crafted a unique fantasy world that balances mysterious magical powers with contemporary technology, creating an immersive atmosphere that readers will love to get lost in. This action-packed read is impossible to put down once you’ve started. Filled with magic, intrigue, and danger, Echoes and Empires has something for every reader—including a swoon-worthy enemies-to-lovers romance!

This is a story that is set in a fantasy world called the Empire of Regara. 17-year-old Josslyn is a name everyone in the Empire knows. She’s the daughter of the former Prime Minister who was murdered by a powerful sorcerer. Magic is outlawed and anyone possessing it are executed by the Queen. When he was murdered, Joss was taken in by her friend Celina Ambrose's family. As the 1 year anniversary of her father's death arrives, Joss is supposed to attend the Queen's Gala and put on a brave face.

As a character, Joss is unlikable. She's snobby, she's a obsessed narcissist, she's hated by almost everyone, including alleged friends, as well as Celina's father Regis Ambrose who wants her to disappear. During the party, Joss wanders into an exhibit from the alleged terrorist, Lord Banyon who is a legendary warlock. When Joss interrupts a thief named Jericho trying to steal a golden box, the magic releases and possesses Joss must flee with Jericho to help her extract the magic before she is found and killed. But Joss now possesses a powerful memories of the most dangerous man alive, Lord Banyon.

As Joss tries to get control of the magic inside of her, she's gets barraged by Banyon's memories of what really happened in the past that certain people want to keep quite. The memories show that the Queen herself has some secrets that would be her down fall if they were to come out in public. The problems Joss faces in this world will be familiar to readers—campaigns of misinformation, structures of inequality that benefit the powerful, and corruption that reaches the highest levels of government.

And while Joss’s initial goal is healing whatever magic has infected her, it doesn’t take long for her to set her sights on finding justice, too. As Joss and Jericho finds themselves in the Queen's Keep along with other criminals who enter but never come out, her development as a character grows. She's still annoying at times, and there are a few predictable events that happen towards the end of this story, but for now, I will give her the benefit of the doubt since her entire world has been upturned and there's no going back from what she's learned.

The worldbuilding was a bit unclear. There was a strange mix of modern technology, magic, and monarchy that made it hard to pinpoint the era of the story, but it had a very 1920's feel at times with all the glitz and glamour, socialites, and nobility. This might be a second-world fantasy, but it features cellphones and security cameras alongside its ruthlessly evil wizards. That mixture of high fantasy and high-tech really makes a splash. Put me down as one of those reviewers who didn't expect the book to end how it did. Although, with duologies, you can pretty much expect this sort of ending.

The sound of a crash from around the corner drew my attention. I followed the sound, curious and wanting my increasingly inebriated mind to be taken away from my self-obsessed ruminations.

The sound had come from the Lord Banyon exhibit room, and as I entered, it took me a moment to make sense of what I saw.

Three guards lay on the ground. A fourth fell to his knees, clutching his throat before dropping heavily to his side.

The fifth stood behind the one who’d just fallen—it was the same guard whom I’d embarrassingly mistaken for Viktor earlier.

His black-eyed gaze tracked to me, and his expression tensed.

“You again,” he said.

The multiple glasses of wine I’d consumed didn’t make it easy to process information, to say the very least, but I quickly came to the drunken realization that this Queensguard wasn’t really a Queensguard.

My gaze clumsily moved around the room, resting on each of the fallen guards. I couldn’t see any blood, but I didn’t see any movement or breathing or any signs of life at all.

“What are you doing?” I said, my words slow and slurred. “What is this?”

His expression darkened. “Listen to me very carefully. Make a move, make a sound, and I promise you’ll regret it.”

I couldn’t seem to summon a suitable comeback for that, nothing to say that would make sense of this.

He turned away from me, giving me another look at the dagger tattoo on his neck.

“Don’t worry,” he muttered. “I’ll be gone before you know it.”

Crime in Ironport was nearly unheard of, so I had no idea what I was supposed to do. This sort of thing just didn’t happen here.

I wanted to open my mouth and scream, to call for help, but his threat kept me locked in place.

He stood in front of the small golden box I’d admired earlier. He pushed the glass holder back from it and grabbed the box in one smooth motion. No alarms sounded; no sudden burst of a dozen armed guards flooded the room.

The thief looked at the box for a moment, then glanced at me. “This is all I need. I’m out of here.”

Box in hand, the thief strode toward the exit until a hand darted out and grabbed his ankle. It was the last guard who’d fallen—he was still conscious.

The thief tripped, falling to the ground hard, and the golden box flew out of his grip.

It landed right in front of me. Before I could summon my wits to pick it up—or run away—the lid swung wide open, and something rose from inside. It looked like golden smoke. Breath frozen in my chest, I watched as the sparkling, shimmering, swirling golden smoke rose up in a tall funnel, as tall as me. And hung there.

I heard the thief swear, a harsh and guttural sound.

Before I could move, before I could even think, the golden smoke streamed toward me, hitting me with enough force to knock me completely off my feet.

I don’t remember landing.

I only remember the darkness.

Friday #Review - Immortal Reign by Morgan Rhodes #YALIT #Fantasy

Series: Falling Kingdoms (#6)
Format: Hardcover, 416 pages
Release Date: February 6, 2018
Publisher: Razorbill
Source: Library
Genre: Young Adult / Fantasy / Epic

The Falling Kingdoms series by New York Times bestselling author Morgan Rhodes comes to a thrilling conclusion.

As two lethal elemental gods set out to destroy Mytica, sworn enemies must become allies in the final fight to save the kingdoms.

Jonas continues to willfully defy his destiny, but the consequences of plotting his own course are drastic. As the fight for Mytica rages on, he must decide just how much more he’s willing to sacrifice.

Lucia knows there’s something special about her daughter and she’ll do anything to protect her, even if that means facing Kyan alone.

Amara is called back home to Kraeshia. Grandma Cortas has her own plans for Mytica’s future. She promises Amara power, revenge, and dominance if she agrees to be part of her scheme.

Magnus and Cleo’s love will be put to the ultimate test. Dark magic is causing widespread destruction throughout the kingdom. Enemies across the sea are advancing. And unrest is stirring throughout the land. Is their love strong enough to withstand the outside forces tearing them apart?

Immortal Reign is the sixth and final installment in Morgan Rhodes Falling Kingdoms series. Immortal Reign includes Easter eggs and teasers to The Cursed Heir, the last book in the Spirits and Thieves trilogy. But, enough of that for now. This is a series that takes place in the fantastical land of Mytica where there were once three separate countries; Limeros, Paelisa, & Auranos. Mytica has a new ruler and her name is Amara Cortas from the land known as Kraeshia. If you haven't read the previous installments, please do so. There has been so much that has happened that if you missed the previous stories, you won't understand the characters, & you will also miss out on the fantastic worldbuilding, worthy main and secondary characters, and brilliant villains of which there has been more than a few.

The story picks up right where Crystal Storm left off. The Kindred have claimed the bodies of Cleo, Nic, Olivia, and Taran while Magnus is in a very dark place not of his own choosing this time. Where Olivia and Nic were completely under the influence of the Kindred that ‘possessed’ them, Cleo and Taran were not, and still had command of their bodies. Let's talk about each of the individual characters that Morgan uses to tell her final story in what has been an exciting and twisted series filled with magic, death, betrayal, romance, immortal elementals, and curious couplings. Our main characters are: Prince Magnus, Princess Cleo, Jonas, Lucia, and the before mentioned Amara. As the story opens, readers also get an introduction to yet another character who you will hopefully know who she is since she's kind of a big deal.

In Paelsia, Jonas Agallon & Lucia Damora are traveling together after she survived what she wasn't supposed to survive. Lucia has gained something pretty powerful, a baby, that may be even more powerful than she is. Lucia & Jonas try to make their way back to Lucia's family not knowing what has happened to Magnus or the others. They have no idea that all four Kindred Gods have been released from their prisons. This is an interesting partnership which pretty much stays the course with a few bumps along the way. Lucia, who wasn't exactly one of my favorite characters after she ran off and got herself into deep kimchee, now has a huge decision and a course of action that will take her towards her supposed fate and prophecy. She still isn't my favorite character because she continues to make awful choices right to the very ending of the series. Meanwhile, Jonas was given a gift, and has grown tremendously over the course of this series. He's still not the rebel that he once was, and he has issues that linger every now and then.

Cleiona (Cleo) Bellos has a huge issue to deal with. She is now sharing her body with an elemental that will push and pull her the entire way. Yet, she is also strong and refuses to give in to anyone's threats, or intimidation, including Kyan, the Kindred Fire Elemental. If she loses herself, she wants to go out in her own way just like she has tried to grind a path from being without a family, married to a man she despised, only to find someone who really cares for her in return. When it comes to the ending of this story, I was absolutely floored, and no I will not spoil it for you.

"Whatever happens - you and me are together forever. All right?"

Once we get finally get through Jonah, Lucia, Amara, and Cleo's first appearances in the story, we find Magnus Damora is a precarious situation. Magnus hasn't always been my favorite character, but man does he really have an interesting storyline. He has been involved in some of the worst decisions of any character, outside of Jonas and Lucia. But, his one concern is actually the most heart warming. He really, honestly cares about Cleo, and she has found that he isn't who she thought he was. If you think your family has issues, you can't hold a match to Magnus and Lucia's.

The least likable character in this book is Amara. To me, her solo storyline wasn't even remotely entertaining until later in the book when she returns home to face her impending rise to becoming Empress of Kraeshia. Then, to top things off, the author decides to reveal yet another curious coupling for which I won't spoil, but if you have read the series to this point, you can probably guess who the character is.

So, in conclusion, yes I will recommend this series to readers who are looking for a series with great world building, fantastic characters, including secondary characters like Nic, Nerissa, Ashur, and Felix. It also has the most interesting villains you will find anywhere.

Series: Falling Kingdoms # 5
Format: Hardcover, 379 pages
Release Date: December 13, 2016
Publisher: Razorbill

Genre: Young Adult, Fantasy

The ruthless Empress Amara of Kraeshia has taken the Mytican throne, and now uncertainty looms over the three kingdoms. Since Lucia unleashed the fire Kindred, wreaking havoc throughout the land, Myticans have been looking for someone—anyone—they can trust. They believe in Amara, not knowing her grand promises are built on lies.
In Paelsia, Magnus and Cleo reluctantly follow King Gaius to the home of his exiled mother, Selia. Selia is a powerful witch and claims she can help unlock the magic of the Kindred—if the visitors agree to her terms. When Jonas arrives from Kraeshia, he is shocked to find that his rebel army now includes his sworn enemies. Along with Nic, Felix, and the mysteriously resurrected Ashur, the contentious group agrees to cast aside old grudges—for now—and united against their common enemy: Amara.
Meanwhile, bearing the child of a Watcher and feared by all, Princess Lucia travels across Mytica to find her family. But time is running out. The impending storm signals the dark prophecy Timotheus warned her about. Her fate is written, and it includes none other than the rebel Jonas. When their paths collied, Jonas and Lucia must decide between blindly following their destiny or fighting for their own free will.
The battle for power culminates at the Paelsian palace, where Amara resides. Rain pours. Blood spills. And soon all will discover that the darkest magic comes at an even darker price.

Crystal Storm is the fifth installment in author Morgan Rhodes' Falling Kingdom's series. Crystal Storm picks up right where Frozen Tides left off.  Rhodes uses her four main characters to twist a story of manipulation, power, magic  & secrets, while leaving readers with an ending that crushed my soul into several thousand pieces. Magnus, Cleo, Lucia, and Jonas are once again put to the ultimate test of courage, strength & loyalty that will both bring them together to fight the newest threat to their kingdoms, while shattering all of my expectations as to where this series will finally end.

I have to start by talking about the villain of the story, one Empress Amara of Kraeshia, who has taken over the entirety of Mytica, while also desiring more power by uniting the 4 orbs containing powerful elementals. She has let nothing, not even her own family, including her brother Asher, stand in her way. She's laughed at King Gaius, while also taking his hand in marriage. Amara is destined to be a thorn in everyone's side no matter how long she survives. Amara, though, is not unlike Lucia in that when she is offered something so much more, she grabs it by the balls, and could care less what the consequences might bring.

My struggle with Magnus continues. He's broody, impatient, intolerant of others, & prone to violence. He lashes out, when he should be standing alongside those he needs, especially Cleo. But, at this point in the series, there is absolutely no turning back. Magnus shows so much promise if he would just stop drowning his frustrations in wine, and stand up and become the character we've seen from time to time. I've decided to ignore a bunch of stuff because of who his father and grandmother are, and just move forward and see if his relationship with Cleo survives. Will Magnus stand up and deliver one more time and save the one's he loves, or will he melt like the ice under intense heat?

Cleo is a deceptive character who desires one thing; her kingdom free from any outside influences. Cleo's discover that she is cursed, is a curious avenue to take at this point in the series. Not a bad thing mind you. Just didn't see that coming. Cleo's actions, and ultimate fate, are still tied to Magnus in my view. Cleo and Magnus romance has actually see-sawed so much, that I now have whiplash as a result. She, I think, truly loves him no matter how much he pisses her off, but he still stands in the way of freedom for Auranos. Did Cleo become even more interesting by the end of this story? Holy hell, yes!

Lucia is alone after what she and Kyan did in the past installments. Pretty much everyone hates her. Too bad that there are still those who need her. Lucia takes a trip to speak to Timotheus to try to find a way to contain Kyan who is still alive despite her own actions. Lucia knows that she needs to make up for a ton of mistakes after she chose to fall for a deceptive character with a major agenda. With her not so secretive pregnancy, and her supposed prophecy hanging in the balance, it will be curious to watch what happens in the next installment.

Jonas, poor Jonas. He just can't seem to catch a break. Except that he has become a bit more intriguing with the fact that he had experiences with both Olivia, and Phaedra who seem to have left Jonas a bit more than just a rebel who has lost nearly everything in fighting against Gaius, and now Amara. I want to give Jonas a break due to his baggage. I really do. I want to see him step up in the final installment, and whether it happens or not, I'd like to see him come out on top with a future he can believe in.

Crystal Storm is the perfect title for this story. There is a major storm cloud hanging over every since one of these characters. What's coming over the horizon in the final installment in the series called Immortal Reign, should have readers encouraged that Rhodes will impress once again.

The Darkest Magic is the second installment in author Morgan Rhodes Spirits and Thieves series. In case you are new to this series, Spirits and Thieves is actually a spin-off from her Falling Kingdom series. The story continues right where A Book of Spirits and Thieves left off. This is a series that swings back and forth between modern day Toronto and Ancient Mytica. There are actually FOUR main characters: Maddox Corso who lives in Mytica; Crystal and Becca Hatcher, who live in modern Toronto along with Farrell Grayson, the rich bad boy who has made a deal with the devil.

Morgan's Ancient Mytica is actually from the time before the Falling Kingdom series began. In this era, the two Goddess Cleiona and Valoria are very much alive. Valoria is the Goddess of Earth, Water, and Wine. Cleiona, who finally makes an appearance in the series, is the Goddess of Fire and Air. Valoria very much wants to get her hands on the offspring of Eva and the only one who might actually be able to stop her is Cleiona. But, who can really trust a powerful Goddess who has made a living from searching for more power?

Maddox is the offspring that everyone is scrambling to find. As a necromancer, he has the ability to see spirits, raise the dead, and kill without a blink. Luckily for Maddox, his father Barnabas is along for the ride and keeps him from doing overly reckless things. But, he's still heading for a dark future if someone like Becca doesn't save him first. Maddox and Barnabas are joined on their journey by a mysterious woman named Liana. I'll stop right there because to go further, would spoil the surprising ending. There are those that are actually bored with Maddox's narrative. I don't count myself as one of them. Maddox, next to Becca perhaps, is the most dangerous of the four main characters. His powers haven't even began to fully wake up.

Back in Toronto, Becca's soul has found itself back in her body thanks to Crystal, and Aaron Grayson after her trip to ancient Mytica where she met Maddox. They, along with their mother, and Aunt Jackie, are hiding away keeping away from the disciples of Markus King the leader of the Hawkspear Society. Becca's connection to The Bronze Codex continues to grow stronger by the day which makes her family a bit nervous. As if there weren't already enough strange and dangerous characters running around, Rhodes adds one that is even more powerful than Markus; Damen Winter.

There has been some interesting comparisons between this series and the Falling Kingdoms. Here is my take. Crystal is Jonas. Even though Crystal has her own unique style and characterization as a photographer, she's not all that powerful and her sauciness opens her up to Farrell's mind games. Her relationship with Farrell is not unlike that of Magnus and Cleo. They hate each other, but end up working together. Like Magnus and Cleo, they might even have feelings for the other if they can move beyond his personality.

Becca to me is definitely more like Lucia than anyone else. We've yet to see Becca's real powers, except for a brief point towards the end, but I think that Rhodes is hiding her true potential from readers. Becca's connection to the Codex makes me think that she will be one of the more important cogs in the story before this series is finished. As I've already discussed Maddox, Farrell is an interesting sort. He's intentionally bound himself to Markus. He's become his second in command, but he hasn't completely lost himself. His mind games with Crystal are just a way to keep the voices in his head from going quite.

The third novel is this series doesn't have a title yet, but the book will release around the same time in 2017. Will be interesting to see how Rhodes ties up the many issues she left hanging with that wicked cliffhanger.

Rebels, royals, and monsters wage war over the Mytican throne in the shocking fourth book of the Falling Kingdoms series, from New York Times bestselling author Morgan Rhodes.

CLEO: Reeling after a bloody showdown in Limeros ending with Amara’s abduction of the water crystal, and a vacancy in the Mytican throne, Princess Cleo must cast aside her feelings and look toward her kingdom with the eyes of a Queen.

MAGNUS: With the kingdom in chaos, Princess Lucia still missing and quite possibly in danger, and a shocking realization about Cleo, the steely prince is once again torn between love and duty, leaving him wondering whether he’s strong enough to rule his people.

LUCIA: The young sorceress has had her vengeance after the cruel death of her first and only love. Heartbroken and unable to trust anyone, she allies with the awoken Fire god, who also seeks revenge.

JONAS: After escaping death by the skin of his teeth, the defeated rebel—along with a mysterious stranger–leader reunites with Princess Cleo, only to find himself a mere pawn in a dangerous hunt for the elusive Kindred.

KING GAIUS: Abandoned by Melenia and betrayed by his own children, Gaius flees Mytica and sails to Kraeshia, where he attempts to ally with the famously brutal emperor across the Silver Sea.

Frozen Tides is the fourth installment in the Falling Kingdoms series by author Morgan Rhodes. A series that features a handful of main characters who all live in the kingdom known as Mytica, but come from all sorts of backgrounds. This is a series that is filled with political maneuvers, backstabbing, plotting, horrible losses and regret, and a whole lot of bloodshed. Kind of sounds like Game of Thrones, doesn't it.

This series has basically centered around four characters. But, in Frozen Tides, Morgan actually adds three more POV's in this installment as well as traveling for the first time outside of the boundaries of Mytica. She adds Amara Cortas, and Felix (who betrayed and stabbed Jonas). Let's get right to it;

16-year old Princess Cleo is the daughter of the former King of Auranos who was overthrown and killed. She's been struggling to gain back her kingdom, and has been married to the Prince of Blood which is kind of like watching a daytime soap opera play out at times. She hasn't exactly proven herself to me that she can be the leader that her country needs. She's too intent on revenge, she gave away an important tool in defeating evil, and she continues to plot to gain access to all the Elemental Orbs. She's too much talk, makes too many mistakes, and not enough action when it comes to making the right choices, and finding the right allies and sticking with them. Before you ask, no I don't hate Cleo. I just think it is time for her to prove herself like Lucia has done.

Prince Magnus is the son of the King of Blood and his heir. I dare say that Magnus did not bore me this time out. He's become an entirely different character who is willing to stand toe to toe with his father over the Orbs, and the Elementals. He's reeling from his adopted sisters actions in the previous novel, and just wants their relationship to return to normal. Magnus is a character who has driven me insane at times with his whoring and drinking. But, let's just say that the ending to THIS book gives me hope that his character has finally found a backbone and will be the one to do what is necessary.

Princess Lucia is Magnus's adopted, or rather the girl who was kidnapped from her mother and raised by the Damora's all because she's the prophesied sorceress. She's been betrayed by almost everyone who claims they love her. She finds herself with Kyn, the Fire Elemental who wants to tear down the Sanctuary and unleash his vengeance on everyone. Lucia also finds herself with a bit of interesting news. News that should be especially interesting from this point until the final book in the series. Lucia has done more in these four books than anyone other than Jonas. I look forward to seeing what Morgan has in store for her next.

Jonas Agallon is the rebel leader who has watched his country overrun by the King of Blood. He has watched his rebellion fail time and time again. But, he's also found that he actually has feelings for someone who is not Cleo. HALLELUJAH! Jonas is the black sheep of this story. He wants revenge. He makes interesting choices and alliances. He travels to another Kingdom and meets yet another guardian who is supposed to protect him. As with Cleo who Jonas has had a connection to, Jonas needs a break and a bit of good news.

Now come the interesting characters who Morgan gives a fairly decent amount of story time to. King Gaius Damora has two kids that have, in essence, betrayed him and his plans for Mytica. He travels to the land of Kraeshia where he meets with the brutal dictator who controls half of the known world. Since he is the main villain of the series, he has pretty much stayed true to his characterization. I like consistency and not villains who all of a sudden have a change of heart.

Readers met Amara Cortas in the previous installment along with her brother. She scrambled the entire series by stealing the aquamarine orb which represents water, and fleeing back to her home. Amara is a devious little minx. She's from a land that believes women are nothing more than ovens for breeding children. She's maniacal, devious, and smarter than her brothers and father give her credit for. Amara has changed the entire series with her brazen acts, and it will be interesting to see how Cleo, Magnus, and Jonas respond.

To be brutally honest with my review, I have struggled at times with this series but I did enjoy the startling revelations and twists that Morgan writes. I know now that there are two more books in the series bringing the total to six. Not unlike the Throne of Glass series in that regards. My heart aches after reading this book. There's yet another brutal death, and a stunning cliffhanger ending. I hate that this series only comes out once a year. I need the next book sooner rather than later. That's just the way I operate.

Format: E-Book, 368 pages

Modern-day sisters discover deadly ancient magic in book 1 of this Falling Kingdoms spin-off series!

Worlds collide in this suspenseful, page-turning Falling Kingdoms spin-off series, which explores a whole new side of Mytica—and an even darker version of its magic.

Crystal Hatcher, Modern-day Toronto: It’s a normal afternoon in her mother’s antique bookshop when Crys witnesses the unthinkable: her little sister Becca collapses into a coma after becoming mesmerized by a mysterious book written in an unrecognizable language.

Maddox Corso, Ancient Mytica: Maddox Corso doesn’t think much of it when he spots an unfamiliar girl in his small village. Until, that is, he realizes that she is a spirit, and he is the only one who can see or hear her. Her name is Becca Hatcher, and she needs Maddox to help get her home.

Farrell Grayson, Modern-day Toronto: Rich and aimless Farrell Grayson is thrilled when the mysterious leader of the ultra-secret Hawkspear Society invites him into the fold. But when he learns exactly what he has to do to prove himself, Farrell starts to question everything he thought he knew about family, loyalty, and himself….

Fate has brought these young people together, but ancient magic threatens to rip them apart.

A Book of Spirits and Thieves is the first installment in Morgan Rhodes new series called Spirits and Thieves. Spirits and Thieves takes place in modern day Toronto, and pre-Falling Kingdoms era Mytica where Goddess's Valoria and Cleonia are still around. This is a story with plenty of surprises, mysteries, magical books, secret societies, a bit of romance, and suspense. It is a story that intertwines, switches narratives, between (4) main characters who will guide this story.

17-year old Crystal Hatcher lives in Modern-day Toronto. She loves photography, but hasn't exactly been all that happy since her father decided to choose a secret society over his family. Crystal meanders through life barely scrapping by at school. But, when Crystal opens a mysterious package from her Aunt Jackie, she watches in horror as her younger sister Becca falls into a coma. She finds herself gaining a bit of courage and strength to do whatever it takes to save Becca, including getting to know the charismatic leader, Markus King, of a secret society known as Hawkspear.

16-year old Maddox Corso lives in Ancient Mytica. He apparently has some magical abilities that nobody is supposed to have. He is able to summon spirits and can also seal them away. But, he is surprised when an unfamiliar girl, who just happens to be Becca Hatcher, shows up in spirit form asking for HIS help in returning to her home. Maddox finds himself directly in the path of the Goddess Valoria who demands his help in finding something lost, while also promising to help Becca find a way home. Maddox journey is that of going from the sheltered life, to one in which he needs to become a leader.

19-year old Farrell Grayson lives in Modern-day Toronto. Unlike Crystal, he is rich, a drunkard, a playboy, and a member of a secret society known as Hawkspear whose leader, Markus King, has been watching him hoping that he will become a member of his inner group. Among the main characters, Farrell is clearly the most conflicted, the most arrogant, and the most likely to break your heart and betray you over a shot of expensive liquor. He would even toss his younger brother Adam to the wolves if it means impressing Markus. Farrell is hard for me to like, or understand. Here is someone who has it all, and uses his society in order to claim he's doing good.

15-year old Becca Hatcher is the perfect example of a girl who is beautiful, smart, a book worm, and one that apparently has a bright future ahead of her unlike her sister Crystal. Becca has an adventure of a lifetime when the mysterious book with a mysterious language sends her spirit off to Mytica. There she finds a boy named Maddox who is nothing like anyone she's met, and eventually loses her heart to him. There's a whole lot more to be said about Becca, but I can't nor won't say anything more for fear of spoiling the surprises.

For me, the positives are Crystal and her desire to save her sister, and make up for lost time with her. I liked the mixing of the time periods and narrative switching. I liked that nothing is what it appears. I like the fact that I can still be surprised by actions of certain characters. I like that there is a hint of romance, but it doesn't infect the stories pacing by stopping and wasting time better spent on who Markus really is, and what he is doing in Toronto. I liked the world building and the fact that we are seeing a different Mytica than what what we've seen in Falling Kingdoms.

I wasn't all that happy with certain events, including the ending. Nope, won't spoil them for you. I do hope that Rhodes makes Jackie and Julia more than just faces in the crowd the next time out. I do hope that Adam doesn't get run over like road kill just so we can find out what Farrell does next. I do believe that Adam can make a valuable ally to Becca and Crystal. I would like to see more of Mytica, and not just focus on the sisters struggles with the book.
