All libraries are magical. Some libraries are more magical than others.

For Alex Reed, the world is an awkward place and books are her only escape. But when she is selected by a mysterious library to be its new Keeper she discovers that some books can be a lot of work.

Now Alex must balance her new adventures with the incomparable obstacles of being an anxiety-riddled teenager. All this would be completely doable, if only Hank would do as he was told.

J.C. Gilbert's The Secret Library is the first installment in the authors The Secret Library series. Protagonist Alexandria Reed has serious anxiety issues. In fact, she named her anxiety Hank the hedgehog and he lives in her heart. She can't even get up in front of class to do a presentation without Hank making noise. For Alex, reading is her escape and her coping mechanism. She can escape from all the thoughts and feelings associated with being a totally awkward human being. She also loves libraries.

After discovering a rare copy of Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland for $2.00 in a mysterious book store that is only opened when it rains, she falls into a place where she becomes the newest keeper to a library that contains every book every written, as well as the lives of every creature in every universe from the smallest tardigrade to the most massive space-whale. These books are constantly writing themselves, filling their pages.

She also could never imagine having an 8-foot Gorilla with glasses being the librarian of such an wondrous and spellbinding place. The library needs a keeper and that is why Alex was pulled into this world. It is up to Alex to listen to the cries of help from the books and try to help fix the issues. This includes the strange boy named Darcy Knight who has been touched by the void of creation. Alex's only friend is Lilly who has put up with a whole lot of nonsense from Alex over the years, but never really turned her back from their friendship.

Then Alex encounters a strange woman in the library looking for her book that ends up sending Alex on a adventure that will boggle the mind. From the onset of this book, there is something refreshing about opening a book and actually ending up in an alternative reality where you can't read your own book since it is still writing your life's history, but you can help others like Darcy out with their own dark and twisted paths. There are some interesting twists that put Alex on a new path. Thankfully, Lilly appears to be one of Alex's helpers in future installment which are already out.
