They say the enemy of the enemy is your friend. But sometimes it's
hard to know the true enemy--and harder still to know who your true
friends are.
As a hunter, Constance Jaeger grew up believing that
all vampires were evil. But now the Accords say they are citizens with
rights. Constance is dubious. And her doubt grows when a vampire who
scoffed at the Accords has murdered a neighborhood cop who looked out
for the homeless, the sort of cop even the street kids trusted. She
wants revenge.
Her strongest ally against the rogue bloodsucker
is the charming, fiddle-playing Valentine McBain. He's seeking vengeance
for a beloved servant and friend killed by the same vampire. The only
problem? Valentine is a vampire too.
She doesn't want to trust
him, but she may not have a choice. The deeper they dig into their
mutual foe's machinations, the bigger the problems they uncover. Simple
revenge rapidly turns into a tangled web of corruption, trafficking, and
sorcery, until Constance and Valentine are the only ones who can stop
the summoning of a demon powerful enough to destroy an entire city.
Shawna Reppert's The Enemy of My Enemy is the first installment in the authors The Hunter's Chronicle. 29-year-old Constance Jaeger is a former gymnast and a Hunter. She's currently the only Hunter in the entire Portland metropolitan area. She comes from a long line of Hunters including her mother, brother and sister who were ambushed and murdered. Constance
is also held back by the very Accords that has made her job that much
harder. Accords which now state that vampires have rights, and unless
you can actually prove they broken the law, they are untouchable.
After she finds a friend (Officer Carlos Santiago) killed by a vampire, Constance decides to go after the vampire who she thinks is responsible; Charlotte Bowen. But when Constance does go after her, she barely makes it out alive, and she discovers that Constance is keeping another vampire, Valentine McBain in a cage. This forms a dilemma for Constance she she truly believes that vampires are evil, and were responsible for the murder of her older siblings, and the forcible retirement of her mother to Florida. Yet, she helps him anyway.
The curious thing about Valentine is that he is seeking vengeance for a beloved servant killed by Charlotte, and what better way than to make an alliance with the areas only Hunter, Constance? Also, Valentine is something of a rogue himself in that he is a fiddle playing expert who allows Constance into the inner sanctum of a vampire club who are supposed to be working to take out vampires like Charlotte. Constance doesn't quite trust Valentine, but she really doesn't have a choice. Not with cops being told to stand down, and not go after Charlotte or her people.
The deeper they dig into their mutual foe's machinations, the bigger the problems they uncover. There are humans and other paranormals like vampires and werewolves missing from the area. Simple revenge rapidly turns into a tangled web of corruption, trafficking, sorcery, and betrayal by someone Constance was supposed to trust, until Constance and Valentine are the only ones who can stop the summoning of a demon powerful enough to destroy an entire city.
*Thoughts* So, this is a author that is to me who I found when 2,000 authors got together to send out free books to reviewers who wanted to read the books. This entire story is set in and around Portland. Constance is a character who grows leaps and bounds from the first page until the final scene. She has been restrained by the Accords since their inception. She has been angry for not being around when her brother and sister were killed. It also makes vampires more free to be themselves, since they no longer have to pass for humans. Constance is resolute, faithful, and persevering no matter what the situation is. Even when looking into the eyes of someone she thought was trustworthy. In the end, I am willing to give this author yet another try when she decides to release a sequel to this story.
