Promise of Vipers, by Steven McHugh, is the fourth installment in the authors Riftborn series. Apparently, 2 years has passed since Callie Mitchell took a swan dive into a core of rift energy and was thought to be dead. In Yorkshire, Lucas Rurik, the sole living member of the Raven Guild, once again has his hands full with rift tears spreading across the globe, and an American serial killer arrives in the country which seems a bit coincidental until you realize that nothing is as it appears.

Lucas, along with Hiroyuki, a Silver Phalanx who protects Noah, who is an ancient, Nadia, a chained revenant who can see future possibilities, and Ji-Kyun leader of the RCU, have a dangerous situation at hand. There are Rift tears happening all over the US and along with the tears, they are finding boxes with peculiar items in them. It seems as if someone is intentionally trying to create these rips in the fabric of the world and to possibly thin out the barrier between our world and the Rift.  

And just as Lucas thinks he’s uncovered an important clue as to what’s been causing the chaos, he’s dragged back into the Rift to make good on an old favor and help hunt down someone who’s been destroying riftborn settlements. Now Lucas must contend with governmental conspiracies involving Earthly cults, dangerous coups orchestrated by ancient powers, and heartrending secrets kept by those he most trusts—and fast. *Thoughts* The one thing I can say about this book is the relief that Lucas must feel after discovering the truth about who was responsible for the slaughter of his Raven Guild, one of the only Guilds that refused to take a knee to a powerful Ancient. However, I felt for Lucas after he seemed to be delayed in learning important things he should have known hundreds of years ago. I was really happy with the ending between Lucas and Nadia, I couldn't be happier that it seems that Lucas has also fallen in love with Drusilla, and I really want Lucas to go back to the Rift and discover the city that was meant to be his home. I'm not sure if I have forgiven Neb yet, but that's up to Lucas. Lastly, why is it that villains don't tend to die in this series but seem to live on forever?

His son, Felix Drake, has tried to avoid having to live with the past, but there are those eager to blame Felix for his father's misdeeds.

Felix is now a Warden on the Planet of Atharoth, Capitol of the Union Empire. The Wardens job is to investigate and deal with crimes committed by and against the members of the ruling family. Felix helped put a man named Sabas Gossard in prison for the death of a Warden, but now Sabas is out, and he has some powerful friends that are looking for revenge. Felix is also considered to be a very powerful sage who has access to the Aether. Unlike others who are required to have braces on their arms, Felix doesn't need the bracer.

When two members of the Council family are murdered, Drake and his team investigate, only to uncover corruption, resentment, and yet more death, as well as the fact that the that were murdered were former friends of his who he hasn't seen in 27 years. Felix and his team (Satari, Dai-ix, Rose, and Tuck) are given the job by Celine Moro a former blackcoat investigator now Warden boss on the job. As the case deepens, Drake is forced back into a life he’d left long ago, bringing with it the same disdain and anger from the very people he’s sworn to protect.

However, he’s no longer a helpless child, and the people who try to intimidate him now are about to discover that Drake is so very much his father’s son. On the flip side is Jaysa Benezla, Captain of Tracked Retribution. Jaysa and her crew are Trackers who get paid to hunt people down for money. After her contract is cancelled due to the tracked being killed, Jaysa is contacted by Ren Summers, sage, and daughter of the King of Stars and possible heir to the crown. Ren hires Jaysa to uncover the threat to her family after they come under attack and barely survive.

The reader also introduces you to one of the main villains named Atasia Sark who is yet another Sage capable of using the Aether to render people helpless. Apparently, Sark has some very high access to the Empire's military grade technology, but for the life of me, I am unable to tell you why she is so angry with both Felix and Jaysa that will eventually force the two crews to work together to stop Sabas, and anyone else involved in the attacks on Council members and the Royal Family. Sabas is an easy villain to describe. He wants everyone who helped put in him prison for 5 years dead.

*Thoughts* This is a pretty easy read but has some editing errors that should have been caught before releasing the book. There are times I think McHugh writes too quickly because that's how his mind operates. We finish one series, when weeks later, BOOM, here's another series. The author, unfortunately has fallen into the woke choke that has infested certain genre's with things like a gender fluid robot who apparently is more human than artificial intelligence. The author doesn't really do any real worldbuilding, but he does have a diverse cast of characters who are not human. There is also the curious question as to who was really behind the rebellion, and why the author is leaving a villain alive to cause more damage to these characters. As with all of McHugh's series, one I start them, it's hard for me to not finish the series.

Talon's Wrath, by Steve McHugh, is the third installment in the authors Talon's series. This story picks up 4 months after the ending of Blessed Odds. For Lucas Rurik, the last member of the Raven Guild, and perhaps the last member of the Talon's, notoriety after arresting a member of the British Parliament comes with unwanted problems including new villains, and the hunt for Callie Mitchell, who Lucas has been hunting since The Last Raven believing she was partially responsible Lucas's coven being wiped out.

Callie, who is a murderer, a torturer, and a war criminal, has been experimenting with various formula's trying to find the perfect monster for a plan which may be close to completion with the help of some powerful villains. Then, Noah Kaya, an Ancient, tracks him down for help on a job. As a rule, Lucas doesn’t trust the Ancients; they always seem to have an ulterior motive. But something about this gig just won’t let Lucas say no. It seems one of Noah’s close friends disappeared right after becoming the lead suspect in a murder case. 

The problem is the guy in question isn’t the type to knock someone off. Is it me, or do villains never die in this world? No, seriously. Callie has been avoiding capture by Lucas and his crew which includes Ravi Gill, head of the RCU, Ji-Hyun, who took charge of the RCU in the United States, Nadia, who is a chained revenant who can see a variety of futures, as well as others like Hiroyuki Matsuno, a Silver Phoenix who works with Noah, and ends up working side by side with Lucas to hunt down not only Callie, but Matthew Pierce who is so dangerous, that he killed a Talon which is hard to do. 

I wasn't sure how many books were in this series until I read the last page and saw that the author plans on continuing with this series. As I said, too many loose ends that have not been tied up. Too many mysteries that remain unsolved, including who was responsible for murdering Lucas Raven Coven, and whether or not he plans on reforming the Raven Coven. The action in this book is hot and heavy and nearly non-stop. It takes place on Earth and in the void where we find the Tempest and introduces many new characters who form the ending of this story.

Lucas used to be part of the Raven Guild; that is until someone murdered all of its members—except for him and stole the Raven medallions of his guild. In the previous installment, Lucas got revenge on one of those responsible, but another, Callie Mitchell, has all but disappeared. 

6 months later, Lucas is trying to track down the super serum vials Callie created that cause humans to mutate into monstrous beings. In this new adventure, Lucas, along with allies Nadia, a chained revanant who can see multiple time lines, Emily West, a former FBI agent who has been changed into a revanant who can be invisible, and Ji-Hyun try to track down a new villain nicknamed the Croupier. The Croupier is leading a dangerous group of zealots who want to destroy both the rift and humanity—and they’ll stop at nothing to make their so-called Blessed plans a reality.

Lucas tends to follow where ever there is trouble. It doesn't matter if the trouble is in New York, or Canada, or London, or even the Rift, Lucas has a moral compass that won't let him walk away when people are in trouble. And, in this case, the Croupier may be the most dangerous villain Lucas has faced in centuries, and that is saying a lot since Lucas has also fought in several wars over the past century. Other interesting characters are Ezekiel, aka Gunslinger who has been around since 1778.

Zeke hunted down notorious criminals, and was once a US Marshal before becoming extremely wealthy. Of course, once in Canada, Lucas finds betrayal and more danger in his hunt for Callie who seems to have disappeared and in her place, the Croupier has become a major obstacle and distraction. While Emily is coming to terms with the fact that she is no longer human, she still has a large roll to play since she does, in fact, know the people involved in both the FBI and the RCU (Rift Crime Unit).

Meanwhile in the Rift, a group of practitioners has decided that they want to take the power away from the Ancients which sends Lucas on a mission to track down some friends he hasn't seen in a while, and a woman known as the Queen of Crows who has made her home in a fortress like prison. The Queen is hanging on by a thread as there are those from all sorts of places who would love to take her down. Including the Croupier which makes for an interesting alliance, as well as a twisted cliffhanger ending which may change everything for Lucas.

McHugh hasn't yet addressed Lucas being a secretive Talon and what that actually means, but I do say that I am hopeful that the title of the next installment literally says A Talon's Wrath. Let's Go!

There were once (7) Guilds: Falcon, Owl, Eagle, Hawk, Vulture, Kik, and Ravens which Lucas Rurik belonged to. Lucas used to be part of the Raven Guild, that is until someone murdered all of its members—except for him and stole the Raven medallions of his guild. The story tends to alternate between 5 years ago, and the present to fill in some blanks. 5 years ago, Lucas entered Netley Asylum hoping to get information on what happened to his Guild by Dr. Callie Mitchell and ended up becoming human.

In this world, Fiends are animals touched by the energy from the rift while Riftborn are humans that died and were transported into the rift, healed, and given exceptional powers. One of the more curious aspects of this story is the existence of an actual city in the Rift called Inaxia which is where part of the story takes place after Lucas tries to regain his powers lost after he temporarily becomes human. Lucas spends just enough time in Inaxia to be told to get his priorities in order and stop wallowing in self pity.

For most of the past 7 years, Lucas has kept to himself in Brooklyn, New York, avoiding getting too close to anyone lest they become targets themselves. But when one of his oldest friends at the Rift-Crime Unit, Isaac Gordon, calls upon him for help with a case that’s already taken down people who mean a lot to him, Lucas can’t resist stepping back into the fray. Something is killing FBI and RCU agents alike—something unlike anything Lucas has ever seen before, on Earth or in the Rift. 

When Lucas is betrayed, and ends up back in the Rift, he realizes these killings aren’t just the random attacks of some terrifying new kind of fiend. They’re connected to whoever killed off his Guild all those years ago—and that’s something Lucas just can’t let lie. Even more concerning, the gruesome assaults seem to be linked to Dr. Callie Mitchell, a depraved and disturbed individual who treats the rift-fused like her own personal lab rats. 

One of the things this author does very well is write action scenes. A friend of mine said that this story reads like a Harry Dresden novel. That, I think, is high praise. Lucas, once he gets his powers up, and grows a set of balls, is an interesting character. Do you have to have read any of the authors previous series to enjoy this book? Nope. You'll be just fine since the world is pretty much explained in great detail.

 Horseman's War is the third and final installment in author Steve McHugh's The Rebellion Chronicles. This book also wraps up the authors long string of series going back to the Hellequin Chronicles and the Avalon Chronicles. Let me just reiterate that for readers who haven't started these series. This is not a standalone. This is book 3 in the Rebellion Chronicles. There are 7 books in the Hellequin Chronicles and 3 books in the Avalon Chronicles which is mostly Layla’s series. So, this is the 13th and FINAL book in the fight of Nate and his gang against Arthur and the evil Avalon who is close to claiming all the known worlds. 

The book starts with a heartfelt moment between Nate and Tommy, in 1798 Virginia, USA 16 years after Nate’s wife was murdered. You can tell why Tommy and Nate have been friends for so long. Same goes later for Nate and Mordred who were once sworn enemies and now brothers in arms. This book revolves around three characters Nate Garrett, Mordred, Layla Cassidy, along with a plethora of secondary characters. Nate Garrett is a sorcerer and necromancer once called the Hellequin. He was created to be the Horseman of Death. He’s in a relationship with Selene and has a newborn daughter who is being protected by his mother Brynhildr.

Mordred is a sorcerer created to be Horseman of Conquest. He’s a video game enthusiast who is often heard humming theme songs from popular games. He’s now reluctant King Mordred, holder of Excalibur, in a relationship with Hel. Layla Cassidy is an Umber able to manipulate metal. She’s team leader of a group that includes Chloe, Piper, Tego, Jinayca, and others as they are needed. She’s the youngest of the primary characters at 26 and has no idea what she will do once the war is won, which she is hoping is soon. Layla has a robotic arm thanks to losing her real arm to her own mother.  

Nate is still the primary narrator, with Mordred and Layla narrating smaller sections as McHugh juggles battles across different realms, on multiple fronts including Earth, Olympus, Avalon, Camelot, Atlantis, and Shadow Falls Realm. The story is full blown action from the start to finish. Mordred and his team end up encountering Poseidon, they later arrive in Olympus where they beg for an army to help defeat Arthur and his allies. Nate and his team try to find Tommy and will eventually end up in Atlantis as well as and Camelot. In between, Nate and Mordred have established a base in the City of Solomon, Shadow Falls Realm. A large part of this story takes place in what’s called the Human realm mostly around Washington, D.C.

Arthur has very nearly established himself as the sovereign ruler of all realms and anyone who shows even slightest bit of resistance is ruthlessly executed. In D.C alone, his Knights of Avalon are murdering people by the thousands. Tommy Carpenter was kidnapped by Merlin at the end of the last installment and hasn’t been seen or heard from in a year. The author combines characters straight out of Arthurian legend with Greek mythology and even a bit of Sumerian god's for good measure.

I think the ending of this book was well thought out. As I said before, Layla needs some time away from everyone to decide what she wants to do with her life. She’s got no romantic possibilities. She’s got a Saber tooth tiger as a companion. She could literally backpack across all know realms and still have time to decide what’s within her possibilities. Some really didn’t like Layla and I can understand that. She’s not a legend like Nate or Mordred. She’s a young woman who was thrust into an impossible situation thanks to her own parents. I haven’t read the first 7 installments in the Hellequin Chronicles. I am thinking that one day in the near future I will try to add them into my reading schedule. Since I met my reading challenge for 2020, I might return to switching between older releases and newer releases to keep things fresh.
