"I knew the sins of my past would call to collect what was left of my soul. If I’d known the price I’d pay, I would’ve sacrificed more to stay hidden from the magic."

In the middle of Wyoming—away from the abnormals of the world—I thought I was free and clear. I started a new life. Found a love I’d never known in a husband, and a son who was my everything.

And in a blinding instant, that life was stolen from me.

The rage of a grieving mother is an ugly beast. More so when she has the skills and killer instinct to back up the wrath and the knowledge that an accident was anything but.

Once more, I will pick up my guns. This time to hunt those who took my husband’s and son’s lives.

Let them see the assassin, trained to kill abnormals, stalk the shadows again.

Let them see the Phoenix rise from the fragments of a broken life as she burns with a fury that cannot be contained.

Let the killing games begin.

“Hell hath no fury like a mother whose bear cub was killed in front of her eyes.”

Fury of a Phoenix is the first installment in author Shannon Mayer's Nix series. This is a series that has been sitting on my Kindle for 4 years. Enough of my procrastination. Phoenix Romano walked away from being an assassin for her father Luca Romano. She walked away with several million dollars of the Romano's money and changed her name to Bea. She found a husband, Justin Stark, and a young son, Bear, while raising and selling horses, and everything seemed to be fine while she was hiding out in Wyoming. In an instant, Nix's life is shattered when someone kills her husband and son and leaves her as the only survivor.

Supposedly, the only person who knew where Nix was living this entire time was Zee, her once special ops mentor and Hider who can literally make a person disappear. A decade of peace and quiet with no bloodshed or dead bodies or magic quickly comes to an end. Nix decides that it is time to find out who ordered the kill order on her family. Nix lives in a world of normal's and abnormal's. Abnormals are those with magic. Nix's family is a powerful mafia like family that has made their money and reputation thanks the Luca Romano's deal with the Devil.

With Phoenix's most precious possessions taken from her, including her home, leaving her only one choice; arise from the ashes to seek vengeance on those who stole them. If this means traveling cross country and confronting her Father and his Guardians, so be it. If it means relying on shady characters to have her back, so be it. But it also means learning heart breaking secrets about Justin and what he was up to prior to his death. It's difficult being a Normal (human) in a world of Abnormals (paranormal). It's even more unbelievable when you're this feared killer of Abnormals.

This story is action packed as well as heart breaking and gut wrenching and does answer a whole lot of questions while tempting the reader with possibilities. Nix faces severe challenges from all angles. From the truth about her husband, to the fact that had he left things alone, he may have been allowed to live. There are secondary characters like Noah and Zee and Simon and Barron who are not grey or white. They are who they are because they've made dangerous deals with dangerous people. Nix's only real faithful companions are her weapons called Dinah and Eleanor she inherited from her sister which are magical as well as her dog Abe.

This is a pretty good start to this series thus I shall continue as warranted by filling the next several books in my schedule over the next month.
