A homicide detective’s violent family history repeats itself in #1 Amazon Charts and Wall Street Journal bestselling author Melinda Leigh’s novel of murder, secrets, and retribution.

For more than twenty-five years, Philadelphia homicide detective Bree Taggert has tucked away the nightmarish childhood memories of her parents’ murder-suicide…Until her younger sister, Erin, is killed in a crime that echoes that tragic night: innocent witnesses and a stormy marriage that ended in gunfire. There’s just one chilling difference. Erin’s husband, Justin, has vanished.

Bree knows how explosive the line between love and hate can be, yet the evidence against her troubled brother-in-law isn’t adding up. Teaming up with Justin’s old friend, former sheriff’s investigator and K-9 handler Matt Flynn, Bree vows to uncover the secrets of her sister’s life and death, as she promised Erin’s children. But as her investigation unfolds, the danger hits close to home. Once again, Bree’s family is caught in a death grip. And this time, it could be fatal for her.

Cross Her Heart is the first installment in author Melinda Leigh's Bree Taggart series. 25 years ago, Bree, then 8 years old, protected her younger sister Erin, and baby brother Adam from being in harms way after her own father killed her mother, and then ended his own life. Bree, who wasn't raised with her siblings, has tried to put that awful day behind her. She's gone on to become a successful Philadelphia Homicide Detective along with her partner Dana Romano.

But things change when Bree receives a sudden phone call from her sister saying she was in trouble. Upon arriving in Grey's Hollow, New York, Bree learns that her sister has been murdered, and her ex-husband is the prime suspect. Bree soon meets Matthew Flynn, a former Sheriff's K-9 who was shot in the line of duty by one of his own people. Because of this incident, the former Sheriff is dead, several other Deputies have quit, leaving Chief Deputy Todd Harvey in charge, and short staffed.

Bree, who is now the guardian of Erin's children Luke and Kayla, knows how explosive the line between love and hate can be, yet the evidence against her troubled brother-in-law isn’t adding up. Teaming up with Matt and his dog, Bree vows to uncover the secrets of her sister’s life and death, as she promised Erin’s children. But as her investigation unfolds, the danger hits close to home. Once again, Bree’s family is caught in a death grip. And this time, it could be fatal for her.

**So, I have been claiming for months now that I was going to start this series from the beginning to understand how Bree came back home to Greys Hollow, and eventually, slight spoilers, becomes Randolph County Sheriff after her work in investigation and catching Erin's killer. For those who hate guns, I warn you that there is a scene in this book that might trigger you. I don't normally add warnings, but this leads to Bree finding out why her sister was murdered in cold blood. One of the positive's of this book is Dana who becomes a live in nanny for Erin's kids after retiring from the Philadelphia PD and Adam who is a reclusive painter who is quite famous. I also like Matt and his love of training dogs to become K-9's. His sister Cady makes an appearance, but only because she's a person who rescues dogs. Erin's kids will break your heart, especially when they are putting together a memorial for their mother.
