FBI special agent Mercy Kilpatrick has been waiting her whole life for disaster to strike. A prepper since childhood, Mercy grew up living off the land—and off the grid—in rural Eagle’s Nest, Oregon. Until a shocking tragedy tore her family apart and forced her to leave home. Now a predator known as the cave man is targeting the survivalists in her hometown, murdering them in their homes, stealing huge numbers of weapons, and creating federal suspicion of a possible domestic terrorism event. But the crime scene details are eerily familiar to an unsolved mystery from Mercy’s past.

Sent by the FBI to assist local law enforcement, Mercy returns to Eagle’s Nest to face the family who shunned her while maintaining the facade of a law-abiding citizen. There, she meets police chief Truman Daly, whose uncle was the cave man’s latest victim. He sees the survivalist side of her that she desperately tries to hide, but if she lets him get close enough to learn her secret, she might not survive the fallout…

Kendra Elliot's A Merciful Death is the first installment in the authors Mercy Kilpatrick series. Key Characters: Special Agent Mercy Kilpatrick and Sheriff Truman Daly. Mercy has been waiting her whole life for disaster to strike. A prepper since childhood, Mercy grew up living off the land and off the grid with her family in rural Eagle’s Nest, Oregon. A prepper's life is centered on being prepared for TEOTWAWKI (The end of the world as we know it). Mercy has 2 brothers and 2 sisters who were told not to have contact with her after a shocking attack on Mercy and her sister Rose tore her family apart and forced her to leave home.

Sent by the FBI to assist local law enforcement, Mercy returns to Eagle’s Nest for the first time in 15 years to face the family who shunned her while maintaining the facade of a law-abiding citizen. Preppers, Sovereign Citizens and Militants are some of the groups that occupy the area around Eagle's Nest and they all like their weapons. All the victims were known Preppers. These are fiercely independent people who take exception to the government telling them what to do, like playing with your friends, or going to church, or the beach, or talking to your neighbors during COVID for fear someone will report you.  (True Story folks)

There, she meets police chief Truman Daly, whose uncle was the cave man’s latest victim. Truman has been the Chief of police in Eagle's Nest, Oregon for only 6 months. His reclusive uncle was murdered and his cache of weapons stolen. Truman is not going to back away from this case until the murderer is found. It appears that a predator known as the cave man is targeting the survivalists in her hometown, murdering them in their homes, stealing huge numbers of weapons, and creating federal suspicion of a possible domestic terrorism event.

Mercy notices a frightening connection to these murders to the murder of home of two young women who were close to her older sister. Every mirror in the victim's houses has been shattered. This brings up a connection to an attack on Rose and Mercy which tore the family apart and led to her getting out of town. Truman, meanwhile, sees the survivalist side of Mercy that she desperately tries to hide, especially from her family, who besides Rose and Levi, can't let go what happened 15 years ago or the reason that Mercy decided to leave everything behind.

Mercy isn't the perfect Federal Agent, in fact, if anyone finds out what she did when after she was attacked by an unknown attacker, she'd likely go to prison. But she works hard to cover up her past. She is strong, fights for the right and believes in those she loves. Elliot gave readers a character who struggles between the way she was raised and how she wants to live her life. This is my first book by Kendra Elliot and the reason why I choose to read it was because Elliot and Melinda Leigh did a crossover event recently that featured Mercy. I am hoping the authors come together again soon, and write another book.
