Pre-Release review - Day After (The 19th Year # 2) by Emi Gayle

Day After is the sequel to After Dark which I found myself liking a whole lot. This time around instead of MacKenzie Thorne's perspective, we get an in-depth look at Winn Thomas who has taken it upon himself to become MacKenzie's teacher so that she can make a informed choice of what she want's to be when she turns 19 and is forced to take on her supernatural shape. Gayle really does a nice job of writing from a Male prospective and even pushes the limits on my tolerance of Mac's annoying behavior at times.

Winn is a really interesting, smart, and amazing character who goes through great lengths, including learning about the current 12 member supernatural council, in order to help MacKenzie so that she has a firm understanding of what she is choosing, even though he clearly wants her to choose to become Human so that he can stay with her. There are still a few secrets and obstacles standing in his way, including the fate of the 12 supernatural council members who are split on how to handle humans, and what role Mac will end up playing when all is said and done. Nothing is at it seems, and there are more obstacles than answers for Win to uncover.

I absolutely loved meeting Mac's mom Maya in the In-Between, as well as learning a thing or two about Win's adopted sister Zoe who has the ability to talk to the dead. I also loved Alina and Suze the only real supernaturals that take a shining and liking towards Winn. Suze will definitely make you laugh more times than not since he is Mac's supposed guardian and protector. It was nice to see more of an interaction between Winn and his closest friends as well. At times, certain stories get caught up in the supernatural nuisances and leave the human world behind and puts stress on relationships that have been built over the course of many years.

After Dark leaves readers with Winn struggling and Mac understanding that she has to make a choice even though it may not be what Winn wants. I can't wait to get my hands on Darkest Day the final book in this trilogy since Gayle leaves us with a bunch of unanswered questions not the least of which is what will Winn's role be when all is said and done? Will Mac make the right choice or will she leave Win behind? Will Mac's mom play a key role in what happens next?
