*Gizmos Book Reviews* Steadfast (Spellcaster #2) by Claudia Gray

*Synopsis*

Nadia, Mateo, and Verlaine have saved Captive's Sound from the dark Sorceress Elizabeth...or so they thought. Despite their best efforts, a crack opened and a new, greater evil seeped through. With Mateo as her Steadfast, Nadia's magic is magnified and she is more powerful than ever. But there is still so much she doesn't know about the craft, leaving her open and vulnerable to a darker magic...which has begun to call Nadia's name.

*My Thoughts*

"You can't always get want you want. But if you try sometimes well you might find. You get what you need." Rolling Stones

For troubled teen witch Nadia Caldani, her steadfast boyfriend Mateo Perez, and bestie Verlaine Laughton, they really thought they had defeated Sorceress Elizabeth Pike in Spellcaster, but it apparently was all an illusion. Pike is back in all her glory, and more determined than ever to bring the One Beneath, aka HIM, into the mortal world, while bringing Nadia to her knees.

There's not much Nadia can do about it either since her own mother left her untrained in understanding her own magic, and there's nobody else around to teach her, except the one person she despises the most; Elizabeth. While Nadia learns some interesting tidbits about her mothers choice of leaving her family behind, and her own magical abilities that are apparently catnip to the One, she is just too slow on the uptake to stop Pike from putting everyone she loves in harms way. In order to finally defeat both the One and Elizabeth, Nadia will have to make a devastating choice that could change everything.

There are several important items that are left unexplained after reading Steadfast. There is still no explanation as to why Mateo is a steadfast when all others have been women. There's no explanation as to what actually happens if a witch and steadfast were to GET together ::bow chicka wow wow:: There's a hint, thanks to another steadfast, that they might be able to control a witch, but that is also left hanging like the infamous CHAD ballots of Florida.

I have to say that my favorite characters in this story were Verlaine and Asa and for different reasons;

Verlaine has been under a curse for most of her life, and now knows who is responsible for her parents deaths and why thanks to Nadia. Thanks to the curse however, she can't be loved. She's basically ignored. When someone meets her, they quickly forget she was there. If she writes a column for her newspaper, it goes ignored. Yet, Verlaine doesn't wallow in self pity, nor does she run away even when someone she loves in targeted by Elizabeth. She's one of the strongest characters in the regards.

When she confronts Asa, the two connect. Asa is a demon who takes over the body of a presumed dead student and gives Nadia, Mateo, and Verlaine just enough information that you wonder if he is actually helping their cause, or hindering it. That's what makes Asa so interesting to read about. You really don't know what his ulterior motives are, and whether they will help Nadia and friends defeat Elizabeth and the One. But, he does make Verlaine feel emotions she hasn't in a very long time. When all is said and done, it will be interesting to see what becomes of Asa.

It is obvious that there is a whole lot of undiscovered mysteries when it comes to Captive’s Sound and its residents. I am hoping they are uncovered in Sorceress (Spellcaster #3) releasing March 3, 2015 by HarperTeen. Will Nadia's choice come back to haunt her? Will Mateo's family curse be broken? Will Verlaine finally find and feel love? Will someone finally explain to me how Mateo became a steadfast?
