“My Firstlife is over, but my Everlife is only now beginning.”

With her last living breath, Tenley “Ten” Lockwood made her choice and picked her realm in the Everlife. Now, as the war between Troika and Myriad rages, she must face the consequences.

Because Ten possesses a rare supernatural ability to absorb and share light, the Powers That Be have the highest expectations for her future—and the enemy wants her neutralized. Fighting to save her Secondlife, she must learn about her realm from the ground up while launching her first mission: convincing a select group of humans to join her side before they die. No pressure, right?

But Ten’s competition is Killian, the boy she can’t forget—the one who gave up everything for her happiness. He has only one shot at redemption: beating Ten at a game she’s never even played. As their throw-downs heat up, so do their undeniable feelings, and soon, Ten will have to make another choice. Love…or victory.

Lifeblood is the second installment in author Gina Showalter's Everlife series. Lifeblood picks up immediately after the events of Firstlife. As a summary, Showalter's world is a place where Firstlife is merely a dress rehearsal, while real life begins after you die. In the Everlife, the place you go after you die, you are given a choice to sign between two different factions: Troika and Myriad. Troika & Myriad are deadly rivals. There is a third option, one that is for those who remain unsigned when they die.

Both are willing to do anything in order to recruit 17-year old Tenley "Ten" Lockwood who may be the key for one side winning the war against the other. In the previous installment, Ten made her choice, and now it is time to find her place among her new family. Lifeblood gives readers their first look into the reality that is Troika. A reality that has members of her own family, as well as others she's met along the way. Even though Ten has made her choice, that doesn't mean the other side is finished trying to lure her over to their side.

This means that Ten has to decide whom to trust, and whom to stand by through a war that shows no hint of stopping or slowing down any time soon. She has to go through intensive training, training that will prepare her to become the next Conduit which are in short supply. Ten's journey is one that has had its hiccups. Those hiccups include her obsession with numbers. I loved Ten in the first installment. The author really gave her free choice to pick what direction she wanted, and not let her family bully her into making a decision based on their wants.

In this story, we see a much different Ten. One that needs a boost of confidence. Everlife isn't exactly what she thought it would be. There are those who really don't like her because of things she's done in the past. But, there are those who know that they need Ten to become the next Conduit if they have any chance at turning the tide and winning. In terms of the romance angle, Ten has made her choice, and I am behind her choice. Really, it's the only choice that makes any sense. Especially since Killian Flynn has put his own life on the line for her time and time again. Killian has done so much for Ten, including betraying his own people. and even though he was really pushing her towards accepting his side of things, he didn't give up when she made the choice she did.

I do intend to finish out this series to see where Showalter goes from here. The ending of this story once again left me with more questions than answers, but nothing that would keep me from recommending this series.
