Nova has the magic of the enemy.

No one knows whether it's the power they've been waiting for--or a curse that will destroy the world.

And not everyone at the Firstborn Academy is willing to let Nova live long enough to find out...

Fans of Harry Potter, Shadowspell Academy, Harley Merlin, and The Hunger Games, welcome to a magical new world packed with adventure, intrigue, romance, and characters you'll fall in love with.

Shadow Witch is the second installment in author Isla Frost's Firstborn Academy trilogy and picks up right where the first book ended. Nova and her friends Ameline and Bryn have survived the first stage of their training. Now, they have to deal with a transformation ritual which will alter their bodies and make them part of a specialized contingent of elite warriors of humans and hollows to fight a force called Malus who has destroyed Europe.

Unfortunately for Nova, her transformation doesn't go as planned. Her new abilities make her a target for everyone, human, hollows, and teachers alike. Lirielle once called her a wildcard, now readers get a chance to understand that Nova might be the one that the hollows have been waiting for a long time. But, feared and ostracized by students and teachers alike, Nova must rely on her friends more than ever if she is to survive. Friends who also include Theus and Lirielle who tells of a prophecy:

-Wait for the firstborn human witch
-Wait for the walker magic glitch
-Wait for the reversal of life and death

Even though Nova is here to fight the Malus, she has plenty of enemies including Ellbereths and her powerful mother who wants Nova to submit and give back her powers. She'll face multiple attempts to drain her magic & kill her throughout this book. In order to fight against Ellbereths and her friends, Nova needs to fight dirty. And, with the help of Theus, who she is falling, she might find a way to survive. What's interesting is that Nova pretty much has to train herself on how to use her powers while everyone else is studying and learning how to use their powers together. Talk about a conundrum.

"Fear is a disease that will kill more surely than any blade or claw. It overrides logic, wipes out hope, and cannot be outrun. Fear will follow you back to camp, it will tax you—mind, body, and soul—when you fight and when you attempt to rest. And fear can kill even those that survived the battle.”

My one complaint is that the first and second books of this series could have been much longer, or combined since they are both really short stories.
