Supernatural Squad might be small, but we're growing in power. The vampires and werewolves of London are beginning to respect me more and I feel like I know what I'm doing - even if I don't yet understand what I truly am.

Unfortunately, there might be a few snags to deal with. I'm trying to avoid Lord Horvath, the black-eyed vampire leader who seems intent on a more intimate relationship. There's also Devereau Webb, who runs a small criminal syndicate and has offered me a mysterious gift that I'm certain I don't want. And across the span of one single day, supernatural hell breaks loose across the city of London.

A suicidal vampire has climbed up the London Eye.

Three werewolves have hijacked a tourist bus.

This might prove to be the longest day of my life.

Midnight Smoke, by author Helen Harper, is the Third installment in the authors Firebrand series. Supe Squad Detective Constable Emma Bellamy is back in yet another wild, and action packed story. After searching for information on her parents who died when she was (5), Emma is called to the London Eye for an apparent suicidal vampire. No sooner does that fiasco end, then things get even more twisted. 3 werewolves apparently steal an open top bus and take human hostages on Westminster Bridge

Both incidents end up being a diversion for a major robbery of the Talismanic Bank which is strictly for supernaturals and those considered others like Emma. What Emma discovers is both puzzling and frightening. Not only are there dead supes and humans, but some of the information that was stolen was about her and being the legendary Phoenix thanks to Lord Harvath. After a disastrous day, she is given an opportunity of a lifetime to fix things by Devereau Webb, the guy who runs a petty crime gang and who wanted his niece turned into a werewolf to save her life.

Webb, who believes that he owes Emma for her kindness, gives her a vial that will allow her to relive her day several times before it wears out. Call this Emma's Groundhog Day if you like. So, while Emma can remember everything that has happened to her, everyone else thinks she's lost her mind. Her supervisors want answers which means that Emma has to dig deep into who is responsible for the chaos that has caused so much pain and suffering in such a short period of time.

This is the first book where Emma being the Phoenix was a non issue. In fact, Emma knows that every time she dies, 12 hours later she resurrects in fire and grows stronger than before. But so don't others. The werewolves know she's not human. The vampires know she's not human. The Other's also know that she's not human. Emma has grown with confidence over the past several books. She's not scared of the werewolves or the vampires. She's also chosen to not be scared about Lord Harvath's interest in her and makes a concentrated effort not to run screaming away when things get a bit hot and heavy.
