When one of Santa’s
reindeer meets a grisly end during the annual A Downtown Dickens
Christmas Festival, Rue realizes her enemies are closing in on her
location, and Samford will pay the price.
But when one creature
turns into two, and two into three, and then three into four, Rue knows
the problem is bigger than a singular threat to her new hometown. And
that’s before a holiday shopper strolls into Hollis Apothecary claiming
to be a long-lost relative. Of her father’s.
As old loyalties are
tested and new relationships threaten to unravel the fabric of her
identity, Rue must choose either the family she was born into or the one
she created for herself, and the losing side might not survive her
decision.
Black Truth, White Lies, by author Hailey Edwards, is the third installment in the authors Black Hat Bureau series. Just when Rue Hollis has made a family and putting down roots in Samford, things are about to change drastically. It has been 10 years since Rue disappeared from the Black Hat Bureau. She's since opened a business (Hollis Apothecary) and her employees (Arden and Camber) were recently traumatized by a real sick villain and trying to regain normality. Plus, there's Colby, the girl who is now permanently bound to her after Rue saved her life and stopped being a Black Witch.
She also works as a consultant with her partners, Asa and Clay. Then a creature attacks one of Santa's elves drawing Rue back into the eyes of the people she tried to leave behind. Black Hat Bureau. There's a new addition to Rue's family. Aedan has challenged Asa, something all Daemons are doing in order to gain prestige and become heir to the crown. But he ends up being not a bad person overall. In fact, he quickly becomes useful and ends up working for Rue. Yes, these characters, mostly are messed up, but they do have some good and bad qualities.
You've probably heard this from me before, but I am sick of the obsession between Rue and Asa/Ace and their hair and it's time to move on. The only real interesting part of this story is when Rue, Colby, Asa, and Clay travel to Davie, Florida and things get very, very interesting. Everything that Rue thought she knew about her family is quickly upended in a matter of moments. To make matters worse, Rue is summoned by the Director and I think at this point, I'll stop because it leads into the next installment in the series.
I have to say that I am a bit puzzled at the similarities between this series and the Foundling series. It has a tendency to drag on and on and on with no resolution until the finale. Let's hope the next book is more exciting.
