Princess Frida Acciai is merely a human. When her father dies, she becomes the ruler of the highly coveted Kingdom of Kaviel.

Enemies close in from all sides—humans who ride on dragons, elves, berserkers, and more.

In a desperate bid for allies, now Queen Frida must turn to the undines, the trolls, and the dwarves in the hope that at least one of them will accept her offer.

The battle among the crowns has only just begun, and to say that Queen Frida is at a disadvantage is not an understatement at all. It will take far more than valor for her kingdom to not fall, but so long as she has breath in her lungs, Frida will never stop fighting.

Valor is the first installment in author N.M Zoltack's Battle Among Crowns series. Before the Kingdoms formed into divided nations, humans and shapeshifters lived and intermingled in peace. Then a wolf nearly killed a human baby and war broke out. This story revolves around Princess Frida Acciai of Kaviel who is descended from the survivors of the attack by shapeshifters. Frida will soon become Queen of Kaviel after her father, King Vito, dies unexpectedly after being forsaken by the Sacred Mother.

Almost immediately upon the news of Vito's death, it becomes open season to see who can be the first to take Kaviel for themselves which has naturally fertile soil. This includes the Queen Thrane of Gavaria, King Marco of Tarragana, King Sigurd of Narva, King Rodin Damir of Neapolis, and Queen Eliana Pearce of Barsil. There are beserkers, shapeshifters, dwarves, trolls, sorcerers, and undines. Barsil are elves who believe in Esse, Mother of all Nature, aka Sacred Mother. Marco and his beserkers believe in numerous gods and goddesses.

Queen Thrane has dragons at her beck and call which makes her a dangerous adversary. In order to protect her own people, Frida chooses to plead for a weapon that is indestructible. A sword that will come with a deadly cost in someone's blood. Once upon a time, Druids went to war against Fairies. It left every Fairy dead. Druids, in the meantime, gained magic and became the first sorcerers. Sorcerers have magic outside of religion. Magic is passed through blood. If one is killed, another gains that persons abilities.

Frida believes that if she kills a sorcerer she will end up with that person's abilities. Not so easy. Frida tries hard to get allies from all walks of life and they all but laugh in her face. Until she takes drastic action which allows her to take Narva, which was once a strong ally of her country, from King Sigurd and ends up with battle hardened female warriors to help protect her country from constant onslaught of invaders. She later sets in motion an scenario where she needs the undines of Baxway Cascades. She later accepts help from the Dwarves.

But when all is said and done, can Frida keep her allies? Can she hold onto her country? Or, will Kaviel fall to a combination of armies that would love nothing than to take the country and its valuable resources? As this is the first in the series, there is, of course, a cliffhanger ending. I would also like to say that I have no issues with comparing this story to that of the Lord of the Rings with all the different characters and worlds and supernatural beings that appear in the story. I will likely continue this series to the end as it appears this is going to be a blockbuster.
