Eric Dalton spent most of his life in Rockton, a hidden town in the Yukon for people who need to disappear. Now that sanctuary is gone, and he’s holed up in a wilderness lodge with his girlfriend, Casey Duncan, and their friends, as they scout for a place to build their own Rockton. When Eric and Casey find a literal message-in-a-bottle, it leads them to the mystery of a woman who went missing decades ago, having never received that vital message. As they investigate that cold case, Dalton must finally lay to rest the ghosts of his own past and make some overdue decisions before he’s ready to step forward in his new life with Casey.

Kelley Armstrong's Dead Letter Days is a 120 page novella that takes place between the end of the Rockton series, and the beginning of the authors new Haven Rock series. This story, however, is narrated by Eric Dalton who was the Sheriff of Rockton. This story once again takes place in the Northern British Columbia area which you can call the Yukon. The new town of Haven Rock is slowly coming into existence with the help of the usual suspects like Casey, April, Will, Phil, Isabel, Kenny, and Diana with financial help from Emilie.

This book has a few threads that will eventually come together nicely. First, Storm, Casey's dog, finds a message in a bottle that seems to have been left behind some 30 years ago by a woman who wanted to escape Rockton and her abusive husband. The joke of this series, well not so much of a joke as factual evidence, is that Casey literally stumbles across bodies where ever she goes. Thankfully, with the help of the owners of a nearby lodge, Casey and Eric eventually follow leads to find out what really happened to the woman.

Second, for awhile now, readers of this series have known that Eric was kidnapped by Sheriff Gene Dalton when he was a young kid who got too close to Rockton while he was out exploring. We now know what a piece of garbage Gene Dalton was through letters found from Eric's actual birth mother, Amy Mulligan who tried really hard to get Eric back, only to fear losing Jacob. We also know that Eric hasn't found time to deal with his adoptive parents actions, especially Gene, while Eric has been avoiding all contact with Katherine Dalton, the woman who raised Eric after he was taken.

If you have read the first book in the new Haven Rock series, you are aware that a certain event happens in this book that really is a long time coming. No spoilers, but readers of the series can pretty much guess what I am referring to. Also, in the final chapters of this novella, are the first chapters of the new Haven Rock series. So, read the novella, and then read the new series that way you will be caught up with everything that happened after the Rockton series ended.
