The fourth and final book in the bestselling Blood of a Fae series…

“I see forever with you by my side. Because long after these scars have faded away to nothing, I'll still be standing beside you. You and I? We're eternal.”

Beware the dread curse of Three…

In the aftermath of the war between Pendrath and its neighbors, peace has finally come to Camelot. But for Morgan Le Fay and her friends, the calm is short-lived. A storm grows on the horizon. As a terrible evil that has been waiting hundreds of years begins to sweep through the land, Morgan and Draven must race to the aid of their allies, leaving their youngest and most vulnerable new family member in the care of trusted friends.

The sword, the spear, the grail’s mystery…

As the tide of war takes them across kingdoms and into greater peril, Morgan and Draven embark on a quest to destroy the three objects of untold power–the grail, the sword, and the spear. Together, the pair will find answers to questions lost in the mists of time. Answers to questions so terrible, they never even thought to ask.

Blood calls to blood, the dark shall rise,

Forged by the gods under sacred skies.

For the love between these bonded mates is not just an everlasting one forged in blood.

You might even call it divine.

Briar Boleyn's Knight of The Goddess is the fourth and final installment in the author's Blood of a Fae series. Key Characters: Morgan le Fay, Kairos Draven Venater, Medra, daughter of Morgan's fallen sister Orcades and former King Arthur, Guinevere (New High Priestess), Lancelot, and Gorlois le Fay, Morgan's father. In the wake of the war that once ravaged Pendrath and its neighboring realms, a fragile peace settles over Camelot.

Yet, tranquility proves fleeting for Morgan Le Fay and her companions as a sinister force, dormant for centuries, stirs anew, threatening to engulf the land in darkness. Draven is also fighting his own demons, not knowing if his sister Rychel is alive or not. As the tempest gathers strength, Morgan and Draven must hasten to aid their allies, entrusting their youngest and most vulnerable family member to the care of steadfast friends.

A family member who could be the prophesied destroyer of a powerful God. A family member who will grow so quickly, that it will take the deaths of some major players to make her understand that she was actually loved, and not abandoned to fight a powerful God. Amidst the chaos, the ancient artifacts of power-the grail, the sword, and the spear-loom ominously, their mysteries shrouded in legend.

To stem the tide of war and confront the encroaching peril, Morgan, Draven, Hawl, Lancelot, & Guinevere embark on a perilous quest to vanquish these relics of untold potency. Along the way, they unearth long-buried truths, delving into the depths of history to confront horrors they never dared imagine! Morgan will also encounter brothers and sisters who she either never met before, or her mother wiped all memories of the family that she was taken from before she could be used in her father's ultimate plans to conquer the world.

*Thoughts* So, this is a pretty entertaining story and a good way to wrap up the series. I do, however, still have questions as to how Medra was able to grow so quickly from a baby who was left behind by Morgan and Draven who fell in love with her, but to end up as a young teenaged girl with remarkable powers to challenge a God. Was it because of who her mother was, and possibly the same reason why Gorlois wanted Morgan so badly? There are quite a few characters who make the ultimate sacrifice in this story. In that way, it makes the story a bit more realistic than to have everyone survive against tremendous challenges.

LONG QUOTE 1

A volley of missiles flew through the air. I could hear Draven shouting to fly low and turn. I could sense Nightclaw was already doing so, moving Draven out of harm's way. But Sunstrike and I were in tune in a different way. The younger battlecat was swift, light, yes, but also inexperienced. She had carried me stoically and willingly this far, but now I sensed her weariness. As I fed her my thoughts, a hand to her fur, I felt her struggle to respond with the speed Nightclaw might have. She turned, ever so slowly as it seemed to me. And then she began to climb, flying higher rather than lower, heading for the clouds. I sensed her newfound fear as the arrows began to hiss around us. But there was nothing for it. I hunched on the great cat's back, my head against her coat, urging her on and praying Draven would cover our retreat. Quick-witted as always, he had already done so. When I looked back over my shoulder, I saw him sculpting a path of safety for us, shadows cloaking our withdrawal as he and Nightclaw sped towards the projectiles and ensnared them, shadows coiling around arrows and missiles, hurling them back down towards the earth. A few moments later, Nightclaw soared beside us. We flew above the clouds, letting Sunstrike get her composure back. I could feel the young battlecat's heart racing and struggled to remind myself she had never been in this sort of fray before. I shouted the thought to Draven over the whistling wind. “She’s never done this before. She’s frightened.” He urged Nightclaw closer until we were flying neck in neck. “I know. We should send her back. Join me on Nightclaw.” It was not a terrible idea. And yet as Sunstrike heard his words, I sensed her immediate reaction. Her utter refusal to return without her mate, to leave us behind. “Not my first battle,” I felt her say, in emotions if not in words. “Not my first. Back on the beach. I helped.” “She did,” Draven said begrudgingly as he understood her message. “But this…” He shook his head. “This is very different.” I looked at Nightclaw, but the cat’s eyes were focused ahead of him. I got the impression he would not tell his mate what to do, but would leave it to her. “She wants to help,” I said carefully. “She’s fast. I can guide her. We’ll just be more careful.” “They’ll be watching for us now,” Draven said grimly. “That large one down below, the general…” “That large what?” I prompted. “What the fuck are these things, Draven? Men? Fae?” Draven shook his head. “Fae, I’d assume. Well-trained, impassive. Very well-controlled.” I snorted. “Impassive? Is that what you’d call it? They’re brutal. Nothing like any human soldiers I’ve seen.” Draven gave me a searching look. “Think of who they work for.” We had never spoken of it outright. But I knew we’d shared the same idea for a long time. “Right,” I said darkly. “It’s probably easy to be impassive when something worse awaits them back home if they fail,” he pointed out. “Why send out those raiding parties if this was what my father had all along?” I demanded. “What was the point?” “To rattle us, to frighten us,” Draven answered. “To test Tintagel’s strength. To see where he should first attack. Tintagel is the closest kingdom after all.” And Pendrath was next closest. Followed by Lyonesse. And then what? Cerunnos? Until all of Eskira was under Valtain control? “Total dominion,” I said miserably. My father must have had this attack already planned out, if not under way, by the time he found me in the dream. “If I had to guess,” Draven said calmly. “I’d say this battle has been a long, long time coming.” He looked over at me. “What’s the plan?” “Get down there and fuck shit up?” I suggested. My father may have been a military mastermind. I had my own style. Blunt and to the point. He grinned. “How elegantly put.” I shrugged. “I’ll use fire. You use… whatever the hell we’re calling what you can do. And we’ll see if we can help out King Mark.” “Shadow wielding. It’s rare but not unheard of.” He sighed. “Fine. But Nightclaw and I will stay close and shield you. If things get too hot, you and Sunstrike head back up into the clouds.” I touched Sunstrike, making sure she understood. She was eager and excited to go back down. But she was a little afraid, too. I knew she’d be more careful. “We’re ready. Let’s go.” We flew to war. The blood-soaked earth stretched out below us like a canvas. Sunstrike flew swiftly. She was young and nimble, if lacking experience. Small flames danced in my hands, ready to unleash on the forces below us. Beside us soared Nightclaw. If Hawl was right, the older exmoor could have been the veteran of countless battles. He moved with a sure and primal grace. Astride him sat my mate, commanding shadows as easily as one might wield a blade. Below us, the dark fae foot soldiers now found themselves confronting forces beyond their darkest imagining.

Morgan Pendragon has another name now: Morgan Le Fay. As her true heritage slowly emerges from the mists of the past, Morgan renounces one possible future as the new ruler of the fierce Siabra fae and the wife of the Prince of Claws and vanishes through a portal–returning to Camelot and the Rose Court where her friends and younger brother lie in mortal peril from Arthur's cruel wiles.

But back in the Court of Claws, Kairos Draven won't allow his beloved to disappear from his life so easily. His bond with Morgan goes beyond blood, love, life, and even time itself and neither one of them can relinquish its power or its pull.

Yet Morgan is no ordinary woman. Not only is she beginning to manifest remarkable abilities, but the powers of the gods themselves run through her veins, bestowing her with an unimaginable power and an unthinkable claim over all of Aercanum and beyond...

A claim which some will stop at nothing to put a halt to.

Briar Boleyn's Empress of Fae is the third installment in the authors Blood of a Fae series. Key Characters: Morgan Pendragon aka Morgan Le Fay, and Kairos Draven of the Siabra Court. As the story opens, Draven is angry that Morgan has run away through a gate to her home, destroying any chance he has of following her. Morgan arrives back in Camelot knowing that she may be the only one to save her younger brother Kaye from Arthur's growing darkness and destruction with a distraught Javer who lost his acolyte.

Upon her arrival in Camelot, things have gone from dark, to hopeless for the people of Camelot. People are struggling to find food. Arthur has gone to war with once allies. He has brutally subjugated people, taken a women hostage who was meant as his wife (Guinevere) and tried to destroy her. He made a familiar face Queen who now bears his child. A child that comes with a prophecy. And, apparently Lancelot and Merlin and a few other notable characters are now members of a resistance trying to overthrow Arthur and save their Kingdom.

Morgan also has a new enemy: Fenyx, Arthur's general and right hand man who is evil as they come and is willing to treat Morgan as a play thing. The one thing that does change is that Morgan and Draven are now able to speak to each other, and do other things, while in dream world. In dream world, Morgan comes to realize that she made a huge mistake in running away from Draven. Especially when he has a powerful army that is at her call now that she is Queen of the Fae.

Meanwhile, Draven asks for volunteers to travel to help Morgan's people, and dethrone Arthur once and for all. But nothing is as easy as one thinks. Upon arriving at their destination, Draven and his army are surprised by an attack by creatures not seen in these parts. And, it appears that a certain High King is pulling Arthur's strings, and  looking for his lost daughter who may be even more powerful than she believes. This is by far the darkest book of the series, and yes that includes the sexual assault that occurred in the first book.

*Thoughts*  In order to enjoy this series, one must forget everything you though you knew about the legend of King Arthur, and focus on Morgan le Fey instead. You must forget about Merlin and Guinevere. They have been written to be totally different people. You must also be willing to open your minds to the possibility that Arthur wasn't a good person when all is said and done, not if you read about the May Day slaughter he directed.

I know that there will be a fourth book in this series set to be released in 2024. We may finally to meet the most dangerous person alive, Morgan's father who has been searching for her after she was taken from her by her mother.

Bound to a man she hates more than she ever thought possible...

Everything Morgan Pendragon knows and loves is gone as she wakes in the dangerous court of the Siabra. The man she was falling in love with is dead, and in his place is a man she barely knows. Surrounded by liars and knives in the dark, all Morgan wants to do is run the other way but Kairos Draven is determined to keep her by his side.

As Morgan and Draven's lives become even more irrevocably entwined, little do they know the sins of the past are coming for them both…

Court of Claws, by Briar Boleyn, is the second installment in the authors Blood of a Fae series. Morgan Pendragon wakes up to find that she is half way around the world from Camelot in a place called The Court of Umbral Flames, bound to a man, Draven Kairos, who has returned home after a 20 year banishment for taking revenge on the man who killed his loved ones. One that is ruled by a people known as Siabra and a Queen Regent who loathes the very fiber of Morgan because she is Valtan Fae.

This story is a bit different than the first installment in that some of the story is told by memories thought forever forgotten and flashbacks, including right from the beginning of the story. 150 years ago, a strange plague has started to affect all of the Fae children of Valtain. In an effort to save her, a mother makes a difficult choice to save her youngest daughter and leave her family behind. 150 years later, Morgan was given a mission to find a powerful sword known as Excalibur in order to help King Arthur defeat his enemies.

After traveling a long distance, Lancelot catches up to them, only to be taken away by an attack by deranged children. Whether she is alive or dead, is unknown. During the attack, Morgan was severely injured and Draven, Prince of Claws, made a choice to save her. Morgan is now in the Siabra Empire, on the continent of Myntra, and a very long way from home and her brother Kaye. Because of what Draven did at the end of the first novel, Morgan is bonded to Draven, and must play a part as Prince's paramour in order to not gain more attention from the Queen Regent.

The first part of this book gets weighed down by Morgan's hatred of Draven for what he did to her even though she is alive. For Morgan, losing Lancelot, or not knowing if she is alive or dead, weighs heavily on her. The other part of this story is a competition between 12 contestants to see who will be named the next King of the Siabra. This includes Draven and a bunch of cut throat individuals who want to see him fail spectacularly. The other issues is that Morgan seems to be having true dreams which gives readers that final piece as to who she really is, and why the flashbacks are so important.

*Thoughts* This is a curious story with some interesting characters like Beks of Noctasia who is a human with magic; Rychel, who is Draven's sister trying to find a way to cure the plague that hurt so many children; Sephone, the Queen Regent who may be in an alliance with Draven's cousin, and rival Avriel; and Lyrastra who is not only a contestant in the games which is contested in 3 parts, but also a woman who is as mysterious as she is dangerous. There is one storyline that I am disappointed that was not wrapped up and that pertains to Rychel. This book once again ends on a cliffhanger after Morgan once again feels as though she has been betrayed, and wants to find a way back to Camelot to help save Kaye and her people from Arthur.

#Review - Queen of Roses by Briar Boleyn #Fantasy #Romance

Series: Blood of a Fae # 1

Release Date: April 15, 2023
Publisher: Starwater Press

Genre: Fantasy / Romance

A doomed love, a dangerous mission, and a kingdom on the brink of war...

A cast-off princess…

Born into a life of duty and sacrifice, Morgan Pendragon’s destiny has never been her own. Rumored to carry the tainted blood of the fae in her veins, her birthright is stolen from her when she is a mere child. Growing up in the shadow of her brother the king, she has been promised to the goddesses when she comes of age. So, when her brother commands that she seek out a fae weapon of legendary power, Morgan seizes the chance to break free from the chains of her fate.

A dangerous temptation…

As she travels, Morgan finds herself drawn into a strange group of outcasts, led by a dark and enigmatic warrior whose sharp wit and fierce beauty set her heart ablaze. But while Morgan struggles to reconcile her desires with her duty, she and her new comrades discover dangers that await them beyond anything in their wildest nightmares.

A slumbering kingdom awoken by blood…

Believed to have vanished generations ago, a fae kingdom dreaded by mortals is ascending once more, bound to reclaim what was lost by violence and bloodshed. As the fae world, with its intricate web of lies and mysteries, is slowly revealed to Morgan, she is led to the terrible realization that the secrets she carries in her blood make her a greater threat than she could ever have imagined.

The first in an action-packed new series brimming with magic, danger, morally gray characters, and spellbinding slow-burn romance, Queen of Roses is perfect for fans of Jennifer L. Armentrout, Raven Kennedy, Rebecca Yarros, Carissa Broadbent, and Sarah J. Maas.

Queen of Roses is the first installment in author Briar Boleyn's Blood of a Fae series. It is a loose retelling of the Arthurian legend. When Morgan Pendragon was 5 years old, her mother Ygraine was murdered by her own father. 15 years later, Morgan, the eldest of the Pendragon's who was expected to become Queen of Camelot, has been brushed aside for her younger brother Arthur. Morgan is a half-blooded Fae, who knows very little about her Fae heritage. In this world, both Merlin, High Priestess of the Three Sisters, and Lancelot, are both women.

Born resented by her family for her mother’s heritage, Morgan is forced to suppress her part-fae side for as long as she can remember by taking an unknown medication. She's also been promised to take over the role of Priestess of the Temple of the Three Sisters when she comes of age which is 1 year away. So, when Arthur entrusts her with a quest to retrieve a Fae weapon of legendary power: the sword of Perun, Excalibur, in a far off land that likely will take months to find, Morgan seizes the chance to break free from the chains of her fate.

Accompanied by men she loathes, Captain Kairos Draven and Ragnar Whitehorn, she embarks on her long and unbeknownst perilous journey, only to find that things she once believed to be myth are in fact very real. Draven is dangerous as we slowly discover after Morgan is brutally attacked and disfigured by a psycho attack who I refuse to name because I hate rape scenes. But while Morgan struggles to reconcile her desires with her duty, she and her new comrades discover dangers that await them beyond anything in their wildest nightmares.

It is fair to say that most of the male characters, except Galahad, who is apparently gay, and Sir Ector who has been training Morgan for years, and her brother Kaye who is innocent as they day he was born, are really awful. Arthur is not the legendary figure that most of us have read in the past. What he allows to happen to Morgan is indescribable, and for what? Power? The story is filled with betrayals and danger and some truly unexpected reveals before everything then comes to its thrilling conclusion in a delicious cliffhanger.

*Thoughts* This is a very dark book with lots of trigger warnings that I won't post in this review. Because of the fact that Morgan has been kept in the dark about her heritage for 20 years, and tried to remain in the background while learning how to help herself, she is a bit on the naive side. Arthur is truly deranged. The lengths he goes to keep her from knowing the truth about herself and her mother, goes to show that you can easily make a hero a villain in a flip of a script. As for Draven, there is some very understandably twisted things about him that I won't share. As the book ends on a cliffhanger, I am hoping to learn more in the next book which the author gracelessly sent to me.
