Nineteen-year-old Sydney Newbern leads the typical college student life until one day her roommate invites her on a hiking trip. Little does Sydney know that it’ll be the day her life turns upside down. Nothing will ever be the same.

Kidnapped by a stranger, Sydney wakes up alone in a small room with a tattoo etched on her palm in black ink: 777. Then, she finds out her family is being watched. Her kidnapper will kill them if she doesn’t comply with his instruction: swallow a red pill daily. Things get weirder when she realizes the number on her hand decreases by one every day.

When Sydney finally escapes, she knows she can’t go to the police or back to her family—her kidnapper might hurt them. Trying to figure out what to do next, she discovers supernatural beings exist, and one crosses her path. The enigmatic vampire needs something from her, so she strikes a deal with him. But will his help suffice in solving Sydney’s problems? Will she manage to remove the magical tattoo before it hits zero?

Blood for Breakfast is the first installment in author Helen Bell's Sydney Newbern series. 19-year old Sydney Newbern is attacked by an unknown man while out hiking with her friend, kidnapped, and tattooed with the number 777 on her palm in dark ink. She's held for weeks and told that she must swallow a red pill every single day or he will make sure her family pays a steep price. Fate, however, has other plans for Sydney. After a series of strange events, Sydney is transported away from her captor.

Having been warned that she can't contact her family or the police, for which her father is one, Sydney's world gets even more strange. She learns from a couple she meets after she escapes that the pills she has been taking, BFB, is from vampires and that they pretty much are keeping her alive. BFB, containing the blood of ancient vampires, was developed by vampires for financial purposes. The tattoo on her palm is extremely powerful dark magic. But, the question remains, who was responsible for Sydney's kidnapping and subsequently being held for 3 weeks?

Sydney's world gets even more dangerous with the arrival of a powerful vampire, Gideon. Gideon's arrival will not only rock her world, but set Sydney on a course that will have her involved in a whole lot of vampire politics and shenanigans. The bad part for Sydney is that if she stops taking the pills, she will die. Whoever used black magic on her, weakened her immune system to the point where she's co-dependent on the little red pill.

At the same time, Sydney learns that her sister Zoey, who claims she's always knew that vampires are real, has also been taken and has all but disappeared leaving lots of questions behind. But, nobody really knows why or isn't talking about the fact that other girls of similar age, 18-20, are also missing. Could it be Demons who seem to be heavily involved? Could it be the Vampire Rulers who are under attack by Gideon?

Sydney strikes a deal with Gideon. He will provide her everything she needs, including BFB, if she gives him one pint of her blood in return. There's parts of this story where you really have to suspend a bit of reality. Sydney suddenly has martial arts skills that allows her to fight against vampires, and survive a number of dangerous situations which she keeps stumbling into. There are questions. Why would Oberon, the supposed Fey King, show so much interest in Sydney? Does he know who her kidnapper is? Does he know why her kidnapper tattooed her with numbers that are slowly ticking down to zero?

I reckon readers will find out more in the next installment which is apparently called Dragon Blood. This book had enough action to keep me entertained and flipping the pages. It is a quick read also. The story is heavily weighed down with some emotion as well. Having been ripped away from her family, how much longer can she stay away? Will her family forget her the longer she remains away?
