The first novel in the Supernatural Misfits Academy series co-written by Amber Lynn Natusch & Marty Mayberry.
Teenage witches Maddy and Celine are as close as two sisters can be. So when Maddy’s power goes haywire and she’s dragged away to Wadsworth Reformatory for magical rehabilitation, overprotective Cece gets herself sent there to bust her out. Escape was the plan from the moment they reunited, but Wadsworth's headmaster and the hostile supernatural student hierarchy prove to be a dangerous hurdle.
To break free, the girls enlist the help of two unlikely allies: a sorcerer with a mysterious past and an elite bad boy who cannot be trusted. Together, the four work to unravel the reformatory’s secrets and find a way out. But when Maddy is accused of murdering a classmate and Cece is nearly killed by a mind-splitting power, they know time is running out.
Can Maddy and Cece survive long enough to escape Wadsworth—or will they die trying?
Rogue Reformatory: Busted is the first installment in co-authors Amber Lynn Natusch & Marty Mayberry's Supernatural Misfits Academy series. This series focuses on two sisters: Madeline (Maddy) and Celine (Cece). Maddy is the youngest, she's also a halfie: 1/2 witch, 1/2 shifter although her shifter side hasn't awakened yet. Because her witch side is dominant, she's got endless potential, but she's also untrained and unpredictable. Cece is the oldest by several months. She's a witch / empath.
After Cece is attacked, Maddy's unleashes of Tsunami of power in a major way. So stunning is the damage she leaves behind, that her own father turns her into the Council with sends her to Wadsworth Reformatory for being too dangerous. Wadsworth is a school for the worst of the worst supernaturals. There are witches, vampires, sorcerers, fae, and shifters here. Maddy really believes that she killed her own sister to the point where she doesn't care what happens to her. Until Rhys.
Rhys is a 1/2 vamp, 1/2 sorcerer halfie like Maddie. Rhys has been doing his time while waiting to finally be released. Maddie's inability to control her magic gets her in trouble once again. Which means getting the third degree from the horrible Headmaster who knows that she is something rare and unusual; Malum Magicae. Something that shouldn't exist in someone like Maddie. It is fair to say that Rhys tries hard to help Maddy out whenever he can. It's also fair to say that they are good for each other as well.
After waking up and learning of her father's betrayal, Cece vows to send a shock wave that will end up with her being sent to Wadsworth Academy. 3 days later, she gets her wish. Cece's careless attitude rubs the wrong people quickly and she ends up confronted by a very dangerous Fae named Aidan who seems to rule Wadsworth. When Cece (silver collar) and Maddy (blue collar) are reunited, things get a bit twisted. Maddy is accused again of murdering a student, and Cece not only faces 24 hours of isolation, but the only thing preventing her from going nuclear is the collar that she and the others are required to wear.
As Cece seems to be the main target of the headmaster, Aidan aligns himself with her, Maddy and Rhys in order to find the headmasters power source, and escape from Wadsworth. Ok, here is where I have to mention Wolfie. Up until he meets Maddie, Wolfie is bound to the Headmaster as a Guardian. But, as Rhys and Maddie are searching for answers, Wolfie ends up being helpful in many ways to Maddie since she basically saves him. Wolfie knows that there is something special about Maddie. He know that since she is unmarked, she is a target for anyone with an agenda.
In fairness to my rating, the best moments of this book are from the arrival of Wolfie, the confrontation of something that shouldn't exist in this world, and the surprise twist and revelation as to who Aidan really is. Unfortunately, it also means there is a cliffhanger ending and thus you will have to pay close attention to when the next installment is released. Marty Mayberry is a new to me author, while I have previously read books by Amber Lynn Natusch. In fact, while I am catching up on my TBR pile that seems to never end, I might do that shortly.
