Prince Alexander of Macedon has battled both men and monsters, but his final war will determine his fate…and the future of mankind. While Macedon’s enemies close in from all corners of the earth, Alexander must fulfil one last prophecy that dictates only he—and he alone—can ensure humanity’s survival against the age of the deadly Spirit Eaters.

As the threads of fate draw Alexander closer to his destiny, an exiled queen will meet a runaway princess, a young sorceress will set the final path of her heart and generals will choose their final battles. Before the light of victory can shine, enemies must become allies, Death must be tamed and hearts must break.

Who will rise and who will die?

Dawn of Legends is the fourth installment in author Eleanor Herman's Blood of Gods and Royals series. Inspired by a teen Alexander the Great, steeped in true history and infused with the magic and Greek mythology, the explosive finale to the Blood of Gods and Royals epic fantasy series is full of royalty, war, magic, forbidden love, danger, betrayal and the triumph of the human spirit. The story begins right where Reign of Serpents left off with a Giant tidal wave and ends with the very Fates themselves, as Prince Alexander of Macedon steps into his role as visionary warrior and unites the Greek States, leading them all to a new dawn of legends.

As an FYI, there are 7 main characters featured in this story with several others added just because they happen to fit in the authors narrative. Four of them are historical figures, 3 of them are figments of the author's imagination. Earth Blood, Snake Blood, Smoke Blood and Spirit Blood all reveal themselves; through Princess Cynane who seeks to build an army of new Amazons; through Kat and Jacob who will spy on the Aesarian Lords and make a plan to defeat the deadly Spirit Eaters; through runaway Persian princess Zofia who gives birth to a new Fate; with cameos from Aristotle and a young Asesop; and through Alex and Heph, reunited friends who together will turn the tide of war into the greatest alliance all of history.

Alexander is a character who I will spent little time with even though this is supposed to be his story. In this world, he has regained control of his mind and body thanks to Jacob and Kat. Now, it is time to stand up and deliver. But, the dreaded spirit eaters are rising quickly and spreading. Alex needs allies, and he needs to find a way to defeat the spirit eaters before they destroy his country. History has all the information you need about Alexander, and what he did in a very short period of time before dying. My disappointment lies in the fact that Alex and his twin sister Kat spent way too little time together, and then it's quickly gone. So, let's carry on....

Cynane, Princess of Macedon (d 323 BC) was the real half-sister to Alexander. She was the daughter of Philip I & was famous for her military knowledge: she conducted armies, and in the field charged at the head of them. In this book, Cynane resents her family, and what they've put her through, including being forced into marrying a King who soon died. Never say that Cynane was not goal oriented. She had a vision and that vision leads her to put together a group of New Amazons who will eventually help Alexander.

The final historical figure is Hephaestion, Alexander's best friend, constant companion, and General in Alexander's army. Curious is that they both died during the same year. Heph has had feelings for Katerina since they both found themselves seeking answers as to Kat's magic. There is a hint that Alex and Heph had a similar relationship to that of Achilles and Patroclus. I will let history itself determine whether the author was accurate, or just adding another layer to the legend of Alexander.

Olympias of Epirus was Alexander's mother and one of the most conniving, underhanded, and manipulative characters both in this book, and in real life. I think she was added to this series because many of her choices led to where Alexander eventually gets. I also loved the fact that we have another villain who isn't afraid to get her hands bloody. In the end, Olympias led a very long life and outlived Alexander and the other historical characters in this book. Not a spoiler.

The three fictional characters are Jacob, a boy from a small village who fell in love with a girl named Katerina, and lost her. Jacob is a Earth Blood. He joined the fictional Aesarian Lords who have been a bunch of naughty boys. Jacob's love for Kat brings them together, but will it be enough? Katerina was written to be Alexander's twin sister. Same mother and father. However, Katerina has magical abilities called Snake Blood that allows her to interact with animals. Katerina's story, in the end, was one that I didn't agree with at all. She also irked me by not making a choice between Jacob and Heph who loved her with equal passion. But, since she was written as a young woman who yearns for independence, what happens to her is kind of appropriate.

The last character is Princess Zofia who has been through more than any other character in this series. From losing her sister, to being kidnapped into slavery, to finding a mythical Pegasus, to being chased and sought out by a powerful character who wants her baby, and later joining the New Amazons under Queen Cynane. Like Kat, and Cynane, Zofia doesn't actually jump for joy about being married off to someone she doesn't love. She has her own reasons and her own goals.

New York Times bestselling author Eleanor Herman deftly reimagines the reign

Reign of Serpents, by author Eleanor Herman, is the third installment in the authors Blood of Gods and Royals series. This is a series that combines historical fiction, with a bit of myth and magic. Your main characters are Alexander, Katerina, Hephaestion, Jacob,Cynane, and Zofia. Each has been set on an adventure that has led them into uncharted territory where you really can't trust anyone to have your back.

Zofia, the Princess of Sardis, is once again my favorite character. As the story picks up, it has been a month since she was nearly killed trying to find the fabled Pegasus. She is supposed to be Alexander's betrothed in an arranged alliance between Persia and Macedon. An arrangement that a certain faction in Persia doesn't want to happen. Zofia has been through the most pain, suffering, loss, and world changing events than anyone else up to this point. She's aware that an unspeakable evil has risen, and has destroyed numerous villages in its way.

Even after finding her way home, she can't really think about her own safety and survival. Especially since the Assassin's Guild has already made attempts at stopping her from reaching Macedon. So, what's a girl to do? Make an alliance with someone who she shouldn't really trust, and travel to Macedon quickly where she hopes to ask Alexander for his help. But, Alexander isn't himself these days. In fact, he's actually possessed by the apparent last God in existence (Riel).

Riel has pretty much torn apart all of the good that Alexander had done in the previous installments to gain the support of much needed allies. He's pushed away people close to Alex, and dismissed many from the council which has led to some hatred and scheming to remove him forever. He has spent a great deal of time talking to a Delphic Oracle against the advice of Queen Olympias and her machinations. But, there is one thing that can kill a God. One thing that if he doesn't watch his back, his future won't be so easily attained.

In the meantime, Katerina and Hephaestion have found themselves on a small island along with Aristotle. In reality, it's not that they are stuck there, it is the fact that Heph has discovered a dangerous prophecy which says that Kat will one day kill Alexander, who, oh yes, is also her twin brother. Kat and Heph were sent on a mission by Alexander. A mission that failed, but has led to Heph and Kat growing closer. Kat's experiences in this story are actually a roller coaster ride of emotions. She's getting used to the idea that she has Snake Blood magic. She's getting used to the idea that with her help they can create a powerful weapon. In fact, her abilities have become fairly impressive. But, with the prophecy of her killing Alex on the horizon, what will Kat do next to avoid it?

If you've read the first two installments in this series, you know all about Jacob and the choices he's made. He is fully aligned with the Aesarian Lords whose hatred of magic has put several character near death's doorstep. Jason himself has a fairly impressive secret. A secret that could end his life if his fellow Lords discover what he is capable of. To be brief, Jacob's journey takes him to Delphi and later to Byzantine where his fate remains unknown. One can only guess where the author is going to take his story from here.

The last characters I want to summarize is Princess Cynane. Cynane is a dangerous character. Don't ever forget that. She tried to kill Kat, and nearly succeeded. Queen Olympias basically sold her to Illyria where she is supposed to become the new Queen. Cynane story is one of revenge, danger, darkness, and a huge jump forward in terms of what she is capable of. It also leads to an interesting and twisted ending which I am going to enjoy seeing what happens next. Don't turn our back on Cynane. You may miss out on a great deal of fun.

Apparently, this is not the final book in the series. Dawn of Legends will be the fourth book in this series. The series has somehow gotten off the beat and track. I do believe there are way too many characters who are given way too much storyline. I believe that action scenes should have been finished, and not rushed into another character's story. As for Alexander, history can't change his course nor can the author if she hopes not to have anyone jump off the bandwagon. His history has already happened. All the author can do is prequel his historical journey to become Alexander the Great, the greatest leader in History.

#Wednesday Review - EMPIRE OF DUST by Eleanor Herman (YA, Historical Fiction) @eleanorherman @HarlequinTEEN

Series: Blood of Gods and Royals # 2
Format: E-Galley, 432 pages
Release Date: June 28, 2016
Publisher: Harlequin Teen

Genre: YA, Historical Fiction

In Macedon, war rises like smoke, forbidden romance blooms and ancient magic tempered with rage threatens to turn an empire to dust

After winning his first battle, Prince Alexander fights to become the ruler his kingdom demands—but the line between leader and tyrant blurs with each new threat.

Meanwhile, Hephaestion, cast aside by Alexander for killing the wrong man, must conceal the devastating secret of a divine prophecy from Katerina even as the two of them are thrust together on a dangerous mission to Egypt.

The warrior, Jacob, determined to forget his first love, vows to eradicate the ancient Blood Magics and believes that royal prisoner Cynane holds the key to Macedon's undoing.

And in chains, the Persian princess Zofia still longs to find the Spirit Eaters, but first must grapple with the secrets of her handsome—and deadly—captor.

Empire of Dust is the second installment in author Eleanor Herman's Blood of Gods and Royals series. A series that focuses on the life and times of Alexander III of Macedon, the boy who will go on to become history's Alexander the Great. As Regent of
Macedon, Alexander fought and led his army to victory against the Aesarian Lords. Thanks to the superlative assistance from his sister Katerina, the long lost daughter, and hidden Princess, and her ability to communicate with animals, the Aesarian's were forced to run away. But, not everything is happy in Alexander land.

He's really not all that happy with his best friend Hephaestion's actions in the war. So, he ends up sending him away to Egypt alongside Katerina to find a powerful Princess. He may or may not have a traitor within his own council, so he travels to find advice from his former teacher Aristotle. His half sister Princess Cynane is missing, so he stages a rescue mission. Then, there is the
conniving, sub-plotting of his own mother Olympias, to worry about. How much can he really trust her, or those around him?

There are many different plots in this story. So, what does Herman do? She alternatives narratives between Alexander, Katerina,
Hephaestion, Olympias, Jacob, and Zofia. I have tried to shy away from each of the plots for fear of pushing against possible spoilers. I dare say that Heph has my heart and my support for what he carries with him. Herman once again mixes historical characters with fictional characters. If you are curious, the only characters that I can truly name that are not historical ones, happen to be Katerina, Jacob, and Persian Princess Zofia, who is off having her own fantastical journey.

In all honesty, authors really can't do much to make Alexander any worse or better than he already was. You can take some chances, and make him fight in imaginary battles, and that is what Herman has done in this series. That's what writing about a historical character means. You can use fictional characters to surround him with. You can add a violent Assassin's Guild that is trying to topple him, but in the end, Alexander the Great was one of the greatest leaders of all time. His actions changed the way armies do business. The way he treated enemies, was respected for centuries to come.

I am curious about the romance possibilities between Katerina and Heph. I think they both have a whole lot in common, especially the way they have been treated by Alexander and Olympias, and they are good together that I have no doubts over. I am not sure at this point why we need to have Jacob's participation in this story. Yes, he was friends with Katerina, but he has since made his choice in joining the Aesarian's. In a way, I could also say the same about Zofia who is apparently searching for a fabled creature. But, what the two different plot lines mean, and what it will have to do with Alexander, I am having a hard time understanding.

Apparently, there are two more books in this series. Reign of Serpents releases in 2017. Makes sense since Alexander doesn't officially take the crown from his father until he's 20 years old.
